Logos 9 Personal Book Builder Incompatible with Logos 8

Without going into great detail how I arrived at knowing this matter of PBBs compatibility, some may know what I'm talking about.

Primarily, Logos 9 Personal Book Builder is NOT compatible with older versions of Logos (specifically Logos 8). The odd thing is that it was purposefully done that way. The incompatibility issue is not a "bug," but was determined to be that way. Why? God only knows. I'm guessing here, but someone in software development suggested, during the development of Logos 9, that the Personal Book Builder feature be PURPOSEFULLY incompatible with Logos 8.

Having lengthy discussions with Customer Service, there is not a clear avenue to resolve this issue. So, the bottom line is this: if someone uses the PBB feature, allot as I do, one is forced to live with Logos 8, and some may understand this as a good thing.

The software engine of Logos 8 is completely different in Logos 9. If someone upgrades to Logos 9 from an earlier version and has numerous PBBs, that person will have to REBUILD from the bottom all of those books that were built in earlier versions. Logos 9 does not recognize PBBs built in previous versions, meaning one cannot "upload" previous version of built books in Logos 9, which means that if one uses more than one computer (main vs portable, mobile) that other computer will not receive the syncing process because the "upload" button feature in Logos 9 is ghosted and cannot be actuated.

One person answered a previous post of mine saying "dump 9". I now agree.

Well, I build PBs often, and I don't know what you are writing about. I used L9 to build PBs and uploaded them and used those same PBs under L8 in the Private Beta, and I use PBs built with L8 or earlier versions now under L9 with no issues at all. I haven't seen anything in this direction in the forums, either.

This is not true for me with my several hundred PBs.

All my PBB's built in Logos 8 work fine with no updating needed in Logos 9.

I rebuilt most of my PBB last year when I got my new PC. Opened one built in 2015 - Looks OK . Opened 10 built 2019 - All ok

I do not use upload. Is the problem there? There is a SCAN function. Copy PBB files to flash drive. Move flash drive to other PC and scan flash drive.

I also do not use upload. I use PBB all the time. All my pbs from previous versions work fine in L9. They do not need to be rebuilt. So I am not sure what Darrell is trying to get at. Darrell, can you be more specific? As someone who has used PBB in L4, L5, L6, L7, L8 and now L9, I am not detecting any problems.

I have had no problem with my L8 personal books. Can you describe the problem you are encountering?

This statement in untrue, at least in the desktop app. The last "completely different" version was Logos 4.

I would not expect books compiled under version 9 to work with older versions of the software, since the version 9 compiler would assume version 9 features. But I have 250 PB's on my current desktop, and only 3 of them have been compiled under version 9. While I have not checked every one of the other 247, I have not found any compiled books that have not worked with 9.0.

I actually have over 300 PBBs, and over the course of about 4 days I recompiled every one of them under Verbum 9 - I was moving where I keep the source files, and that's the only way I could correct the belief the the source files were missing when I went into Personal Book builder. Every one of my PBBs compiled fine under Verbum 9.

This is such a humorous misunderstanding of my post that I did not recognize it ... it was purely incidental that it was the 9th post I'd bumped that evening and therefore had a 9 to allow this misinterpretation. But this breakdown in communication is worth a good laugh ... and a warning that I might wish to avoid "9" in the bumping sequence.

If you are using more than one computer, you can try a different method to get all previous built pbs into L9 by using one of these methods:

Not sure if this helps you, but it is worth suggesting. As you can see, many of us do not have the problem you are describing. What happens if you use one of the methods from the link above in a new install of L9?

Darrell, many years ago when L3 was the top product, I had my first experience with Logos Customer Service - and it was not pleasant. Unpleasant partially because they were too slow to recognize a bug in the system and partially because I misunderstood their intended role. Fortunately, all subsequent contacts have been successful. For the type of problem you seem to be having, the forums are usually the best place to start. We are the place to work out application problems rather than hardware/system/security problems. And, if you come here with a problem that is not, in fact, an application/user problem, we can give you the language to communicate successfully with Customer Service.

However, we are not able to help if we don't have accurate information as to the steps you took and the results you saw. Because the PBB has not been reworked for several years and based on you brief description we haven't seen this problem before, we can safely assume that it is something unique to your hardware/change in hardware or something unusual in your source documents or some action you took If you want help, please give us the details; if you just wanted to blow off steam, that's fine too but remember we need to leave the thread in a state that people coming through later will not get false information.

I know you want to help, but this suggestion is too broad in its scope. Re-installing is not necessary for this issue. The relevant part of Method 3 is the scan step as this can be used with a folder of Personal Books (*.lbspbb) copied from the L8 Resources folder e.g. in L9, issue the command scan PB-files.

Accordingly:

have ANY of your previously uploaded PB's from Logos 8 downloaded to Logos 9?
have you tried to upload a PB built in Logos 8 and has it downloaded to Logos 9?
have you found that the Upload button is always ghosted after building books in Logos 9?
we can eliminate general assertions if you upload a couple of docx files that you had to rebuild in Logos 9.
what did Customer Service verify when they logged onto your computer(s)?
did they recommend that you bring this problem to the forums?

If you can't, or do not, respond to these questions I will recommend that this thread be removed.

Look, since you helped in previous posts, I want to assume correctly that you could help me here.

I have to write almost a literal book to fill in the peripherals to explain the situation so that you could understand my pov. Instead, and what happened with L9 customer service, after my initial inquiry when I discovered "the" issue some months back. I started a chat with L9 CS concerning the "upload" button having the "ghosted" icon. L9 CS person who was trying to answer my concern with automated responses to my question. Finally, after 30 minutes of back and forth, this person finally got focused on my issue, and responded with a link for me to mimic my mouse action and typing pattern to build a PB. All was compiled into a log file, and I emailed it to the provided lick.

Not hearing from L9 CS for a couple of months I initiate another L9 CS chat with the same person I chatted with previously. I had to go through the same educationing with this person again. Getting no ware, I opted to call CS instead, and matters got worse until I had a good technical discussion with CS after a number of different people.

With that discussion in mind I popped in here to relay the news I got. Needless to say what I got in return was a smack in the face of L9 CS feeding me a horse cart of crap in comparison to what I learned here.

Having all that out of the way, and hoping you are "on board" with my pov, what I would like is an answer to my bewilderment over what L9 CS did to me that consisted of me waiting for the right replay for me to spill my guts out over something that could be an easy fix.

Ok, it's fine if I walk away with egg on my face, at least I found truth, and an answer.

I was hoping to go to the source if it turned out to be a bug, but after being jerked around thinking I was told something I thought to be believable (the irony), I just repeated what I was told and came away with egg on my face. I didn't like be "hood winked" by L9 CS.

This is what I thought, and this was part of the discussion I had with L9 CS, and, also, the reason they were wanting me to supply them with a "log file" produced covering their list of instructions, and nothing came of it, and the reason for it being a frustrating "weeks" of them not getting back with me.

Running L8 just fine. Months later, learned there was L9 for upgrade. After loading L9 I continued on with what I was doing in PBBs. After some builds I was going to go somewhere and I wanted to bring my portable. Having a L9 nubie knowledge of how I could get my builds to another comp, I understood how "Uploading" worked and discovered the "Upload" button ghosted. L9 CS chat lead me to discovering the beginning of CS "shoulder shrugging" and after many different times of connecting with L9 chat I wasn't able to properly communicate my problem to them until the last, after many, phone calls with CS that they feed me the crap I originally posted with. All this, coupled with other posters terse response, didn't leave me with a good taste in my mouth.

Thank you - I now have a reasonable understanding of what happened and can understand your frustration. I suspect that you and the customer service representive did a fair amount of talking past each other without recognizing it. I often have that problem in a different guise - I tend to be overly precise in what I say and customer representives (of many companies) assume I am being sloppy and circle around a bit before realizing I said precisely what I meant.

I'm very sorry this has been a long, arduous process. I see in the notes from your first interaction with CS that we asked you to try to recompile one of the books for which the upload button was inactive in Logos 9. I cannot tell, with any certainty from the notes or from your thread here, whether you tried rebuilding any of the PBBs and what the results were.

Did you try rebuilding any of the PBBs, and if so did the upload button become active when Logos was opened online and your computer had an internet connection?

Yes, one of the suggestions was to actually recompile a built book in L9 from which I had already compiled in L8. The result was no difference, which lead to another discussion that if I wanted to use the "Upload" option I would have to go back in MSWord and re-write the entire .docx files to then compile all the previous builds I had in L8 to make the "Upload" feature work properly in L9. This didn't make any sense, but being frustrated with the progress to this point.....
