why such a big difference in viewing margins

When I do my bible reading on my ipad pro 11 and set the scrolling to 1 page at a time (swipe right and left), I get nearly edge to edge text.  When I switch to scrolling view (up and down) I get almost an inch of blank space on the right and left.  Why?!?!?!?!  It is such a waste of screen space and an aggravation to look at.  Any way to adjust the blank spacing around the text for up and down scrolling?  Thanks.

Welcome to the Forums - I hope you find what you are looking for.

I am using an iPad air and get the same, I assume, display,

Setting the display to Page by Page,  in landscape I get about 2cm on each side edge, slightly less in portrait.

Setting the display to Scrolling, the edge remains the same in landscape but the edge space doubles when turned into landscape.

It would seem that the only way to adjust the width of text displayed is to change to reading in Portrait mode.

And speculate how the mobile guy figured this out.

It seems to have required extra code and therefore, maybe a big-boss over at desktop wanted 'more pretty'. A compromise maybe.  Mobile used to struggle getting the text on the screen at the bottom, in footnote mode ... maybe the algo-rythm went haywire (so's not to blame the desktop boss, you know).

Welcome to the forums! And, happy holidays.

I have an iPad Pro 11. I agree; lots of wasted space when viewing in horizontal mode. This has been an oddity to me. This is why I keep my iPad in vertical scrolling mode.

But, on my iPad Mini, when I set it to swipe left and right scrolling the text fills the page in both horizontal and portrait mode, but when I switch back to vertical scrolling, the margins widen in horizontal mode.
