HELP! Still Baffled and Frustrated by new Notes Tool

I have viewed the training videos I can find on the new (as of Logos 8) Notes tool, and am still baffled and frustrated regarding the location of highlights and notes. But I'll focus on the location of highlights and on the Notes interface itself with an example from this morning.

I'm going through Ephesians and making highlights in Grant Osborne's commentary "Ephesians: Verse by Verse". When I first started this study a couple of weeks ago, I realized my highlights were not being recorded in a notebook specific to this study and commentary--they were being stored in what I assume is a Logos generated location titled "Ephesians", under the category/facet, "Bible Book", along with highlights I've made in other Ephesians commentaries. So I created a notebook titled after the commentary--i.e. "Ephesians: Verse by Verse", and moved (copied?) the highlights I'd made in this commentary to the new notebook just created. But subsequent highlights don't show up in that notebook.

So in an effort to locate the subsequent highlights, I look over the various facets listed in the "Notes" tool, and see a facet titled "Resource", and think I'll find an entry for this commentary resource there. But nada... nothing... zip--no such resource entry. And to make matters worse, the resources that are listed are not listed alphabetically--the order in which they are listed appears to be based on the number of highlights/notes entries in the resources. So searching for the desired resource in that list is a pain and I don't see any way to change the order. So now I'm wondering, why I don't see this commentary resource included in the list of resources (which does include other commentary resources).

So I back out of the high-level resource list and click on the Ephesians entry under the facet "Bible Books", and find my commentary title listed under TWO facets--"Resource" and "Notebook". I select the entry for Grant's commentary under the "Resource" facet, and my most recent highlights (i.e. from this morning) ARE there. I select the entry for Grant's commentary under the "Notebook" facet, and the highlights from this morning are NOT there.

So a couple of questions and then some Notes tool interface frustrations.

QUESTION #1: Why doesn't Grant's commentary resource show up under the main/high level "Resource" facet along with the other commentary resources that appear in the list? Why for this particular commentary resource, do I have to select the facet "Bible Books", and then select the entry titled "Ephesians", in order to see it included in a sub-facet there titled "Resource"?

QUESTION #2: Why don't my most recent highlights (from this morning) show up in the "Notebook" I created for this study with Grant's commentary, along with the previous highlights in the commentary that I moved there after creating the notebook?

QUESTION #3: Is there a way to ensure that from one day to the next, my highlights will continue to be automatically poplulated in the "Notebook" I created for the study?

NOTES TOOL INTERFACE FRUSTRATIONS

1) SORT ORDER AND SCROLLING: When selecting any of the sort options for highlights/notes (e.g. Date Created, Date Modified), there is no way (that I have discovered) to choose ascending vs descending order. Nor is there any way ( I have found) to jump the top and bottom of this list, nor is there a scroll bar (that I can see) that one can use to quickly move up and down through the list of entries. The only way I've found to move through the list on my laptop, is the slow, two-finger method of scrolling with the track pad. Basically useless in a long list.

2) CLOSING AND DELETING NOTES: After fully opening a note from a list of notes, I don't see any way to close or delete the note without first selecting the vertical 3 dot drop-down menu and selecting the option from there. I find that cumbersome and would like to see those as options directly available from the note window.

I attempted to reproduce your situation using the same resource.

It's not helpful if many resources are listed. The order is fixed.

I have few resources, so it was found easily. Did you click on more >> to see other entries? There could be a limit to the number displayed.

Answered above. It depends on the Palettes used.

Change the default in the Palette header. But you will have to change it for another project/study.

That is frustrating. It is quicker to select a number of Notes/Highlights and use Delete selected Notes + Apply Changes in the next pane.

I have a very simple system I use- outside L9 notes- its called using my mind, and not being a prisoner of someone else's- Logos is a tool and it's treated that way- a good mechanic, carpenter, engineer is the brain's of his tools not the other way around. I have thousands of notes in Word doc's- and not clutter, no fuss and no mess.

So my view of Logos notes is from experience, not a blind dislike.

Dave, before anything else, I want to thank you for taking the time to read the entire post and respond as you did throughout.

You pointed out four things that I'd like to discuss a little more if you're willing.

1) DEFAULT NOTEBOOK: Thank you for reminding me about the default Notebook assigned to palettes. A considerable time in the past I set my default for the various palettes to be the "Active Notebook", which I understood would always be the most recent Notebook used for a note or a highlight. Since all my recent notes and highlights have been in the "Ephesians: Verse by Verse" commentary and I had created a notebook by that title and moved the appropriate notes and highlights to it, and (so I thought) had seen a couple of highlights go there right after creating the notebook a few weeks ago, I would have thought the notes/highlights would be going to the correct notebook. I hadn't checked that setting though in a long time so I rechecked and see the default is still set to be the "Active Notebook" for the palettes I've been using. I assume then that my "Ephesians: Verse by Verse" notebook is not the "Active Notebook" as I thought it was. Any chance you can tell me how to make it so?

2) RESOURCE FACET: I had previously checked, double-checked, and triple-checked the resources listed under the Resource facet, and "Ephesians: Verse by Verse" was not listed. But I just checked again and then rechecked again. It is not in the list. Initially the list consists of four resources. Clicking the "more" button results in a list of 30 resources and no repetition of the "more" button. The "Ephesians: Verse by Verse" resource is not in the list. I do see an entry titled "Ephesians: Verse by Verse" under the Notebook facet, but not under the Resource facet. The only way I see it as a resource is by first selecting the "Bible Books" facet and then selecting "Ephesians". After doing that, I see the commentary title listed under both the "Resource" facet and the "Notebook" facet. But in the initial facet list, the title only shows up under the "Notebook" facet.

3) SORT ORDER: I agree that the longer the list of entries under a facet, the less convenient any sort order may become. But for me, listing the entries alphabetically would be far more useful than listing them by the number of notes/highlights they contain. In fact, I can't think of any situation/circumstance where that would be useful for me.

4) FAINT SCROLL BAR and use of HOME/END KEYS: On my Windows 10 laptop there is no faint scroll bar. But... if I hover over the far right edge of the notes panel a very small symbol/icon pops up consisting of a left arrow followed by two very short vertical parallel lines that are almost touching each other. If I drag that icon/symbol to the left, I then see a right arrow following the two vertical lines, but after dragging it to the left, the entire icon disappears as soon as I release the mouse. If I leave the icon at the far right of the panel where I can only see the left arrow and two vertical lines, it will stay visible, but the home, end, pgup, and pgdn keys do nothing. HOWEVER, if I open a note, then I can see a small vertical gap between the list of notes on the left and the open note on the right. IF I position the cursor just so-so in that gap (it's very touchy), I can then use the home, end, pgup, and pgdn keys to move through the list of notes. And if I'm very, very careful with the cursor placement, I can sometimes use the mouse to scroll through the list of notes. But it's hit-and-miss. [:(]

I want to thank you again though for your help. I do feel like l'm making progress.

I'll be out of town all day today--will try your suggestions when I return.

I wasn't aware of the 30 resource limit in the facet listing. If that was in a video I guess I missed it. In regard to making a notebook the active notebook, I have two questions.

1) You said the desired notebook has to be open and selected in the Notes tool. If the Notes tool is open and the "Ephesians: Verse by Verse" notebook has been selected, does selecting the notebook not also open it? If it doesn't, do you mean I have to have the Notes tool open and the notebook selected from there, but that I also have to open the notebook from the main "Docs" tab?

2) Whichever is the case in question 1, does the selection process have to be done every time I open Logos? Or... once done, is it tied to the layout for my Ephesians study from then on, thus being retained/remembered by Logos as part of my Ephesians layout until I change the Active Notebook? Or... does it require that the layout includes a tab for the Notes tool always be open with that particular notebook selected? Or... (sorry about all the "ors") Once a notebook has been selected, will it remain the Active Notebook until manually changed, regardless of which of my layouts I open?

Note: Graham, I don't necessarily expect you to know the answers to my questions. I'm throwing them out there just in case you do. If you don't know, then I'll have them documented to run by Logos Customer Service.

UPDATE: My out-of-town travel was cancelled due to weather, so I've been able to play around a little with the notes/highlights based on Graham's comments and questions. Here's what I've found so far.

1) Graham's question about doing a search on "Ephesians" from within the Notes tool. With no facets selected (the notes tool is showing "all"), doing a search on "Ephesians" does not bring up anything for "Ephesians: Verse by Verse". Nothing for the resource and nothing for the notebook, even though prior to doing the search, that title does appear near the bottom of the list of entries under the "Notebook" facet after I select the "more" button. I guess it only shows up there by chance because it happens to fall within the 30 entry limit Logos places on a facet list, as previously explained to me, which also explains why I don't see the title there under the RESOURCE facet (i.e. under that facet, it doesn't fall within the 30 entry limit. If it didn't fall within that 30 entry limit under the NOTEBOOK facet, I wouldn't see it there either and the search doesn't find it. [:(] The ONLY other way I've found so far to locate anything for "Ephesians: Verse by Verse", is by first selecting the facet "Bible Book" and then selecting the entry for the book of "Ephesians". Doing that brings up a list that includes "Ephesians: Verse by Verse" under both the RESOURCE and NOTEBOOK facets.

2) Making "Ephesians: Verse by Verse" the Active Notebook. Opening the Notes tool and going through the process described above in #1 to locate and select "Ephesians: Verse by Verse" does make it the Active Notebook and seems to be the only way to do so. I.e. Just opening the notebook from the "Docs" drop-down tab does not make it the Active Notebook. This process seems far too unintuitive and esoteric than it needs to be. Why not just have the ability (or at least the added ability) to right-click on a Notebook title from the "Docs" drop-down menu and select an option that reads something like "Make Active Notebook"?

I figured out why my searches for "Ephesians" weren't returning "Ephesians: Verse by Verse".

Per the layout of the Notes tab screen shot below, I had been entering my search string in the first/top search window--the long search window just to the right of the icon to open and close the sidebar. I just realized that the short box just above the filters list... the box containing the word "Filters", also serves as a search box, and that tapping directly on the small magnifying glass on the right side of that box, removes the word "Filters" and activates the search window that is needed to search the various facets. Entering the "ephesians" search string there does bring up entries for "Ephesians: Verse by Verse" under both the RESOURCE and NOTEBOOK facets.

I feel pretty foolish, but for searching, my eye was continually drawn to the long top search window that says "Search" within it and not to the short box with the word "Filters". Don't know yet what the top search box is for, but now I know what the problem was.

Also, after a little experimenting, I now know that if I make a Notebook the Active Notebook and leave it open as a part of the layout, that it will remain the Active Notebook for that layout after closing and reopening the layout, AND that on the flip side, the Active Notebook for one layout will not by default remain the Active Notebook if opening a different layout. Making progress little by little.

I forget the reason for the limitation. It applies to all facets apart from Biblical Books.

I mislead you a little on that one. "Default" was always one I had pre-selected rather than "Active"; which was always a pain to be sure about!

Thanks Dave. I'm guessing the reason the keys weren't working for me before, is that I may have been lightly touching/tapping the track pad while the cursor was positioned somewhere within the open/active note on the right, thus taking the focus off the list of notes and placing it on the open note. Clicking back anywhere in the list of notes on the left does enable the keys without needing to position the cursor just "so-so" within the width of the narrow scroll bar separating the list of notes from the open note.

Just opening the notebook from the "Docs" drop-down tab does not make it the Active Notebook. This process seems far too unintuitive and esoteric than it needs to be. Why not just have the ability (or at least the added ability) to right-click on a Notebook title from the "Docs" drop-down menu and select an option that reads something like "Make Active Notebook"?

Opening the notebook from the Docs menu should in fact make the notebook active. It does the same thing as selecting the notebook from within the Notes Tool. I did notice, however, that the sort order of the notes seems to default to "by Notebook" (which seems weird and useless since you only have one notebook open) and you have to change the sort order to "by Date Created" or "by Date Modified" to see the most recent note/highlight you just created. I was able to open the notebook from the Docs menu (which does make it active unless and until I close it) and successfully create a highlight in that notebook in the Ephesians Verse by Verse resource with my highlight palette set to "active notebook." "Active notebook" seems to not also mean "most recent notebook", unfortunately.

Try opening the notebook from the Docs menu again and making a highlight, and then check the sort order of the notes in the notebook and change it to "by Date Created/Modified" if necessary, it should be there. If it's not, something is wrong because that is working for me. (Forgive me if this was already answered above or if you had already figured this out but I didn't notice this specific issue being addressed in previous posts as I scrolled through, I could have just missed it.)

I agree that it seems strange that opening a notebook results in the sort order of the notes defaulting to notebook rather than to date created or date modified. I don't understand how that is in any way helpful/useful. And you're probably correct that the reason my newly added highlights weren't visible where/as I expected, is because of the sort order defaulting to notebook.

Thanks for suggesting I try it again and change the sort order. It's nice to have a couple of ways to make a notebook the active notebook.

Just opening the notebook from the "Docs" drop-down tab does not make it the Active Notebook. This process seems far too unintuitive and esoteric than it needs to be. Why not just have the ability (or at least the added ability) to right-click on a Notebook title from the "Docs" drop-down menu and select an option that reads something like "Make Active Notebook"?

Opening the notebook from the Docs menu should in fact make the notebook active. It does the same thing as selecting the notebook from within the Notes Tool. I did notice, however, that the sort order of the notes seems to default to "by Notebook" (which seems weird and useless since you only have one notebook open) and you have to change the sort order to "by Date Created" or "by Date Modified" to see the most recent note/highlight you just created. I was able to open the notebook from the Docs menu (which does make it active unless and until I close it) and successfully create a highlight in that notebook in the Ephesians Verse by Verse resource with my highlight palette set to "active notebook." "Active notebook" seems to not also mean "most recent notebook", unfortunately.
