In the upper right on the main screen is a blue icon with a number in it. The number was 3 for a while, then 2 for a while and now 1. What does the number mean?

Its an indication of some sort of update to the software.
It could indicate a new software release, updates to resources, more resources added, that the software is indexing
Click the icon to get more information about what it means at any particular time.
If I may add, clicking the blue icon does NOT start the update.
The number in the icon is 1 for me. So I did an update now and there was an update.
Normally that number is 2... or 3. I am sure that doesn't mean 2 or 3 updates available. But the 1 seems to mean update available.

No. The number means "number of messages available", just a simple count. 1 might mean "Logos is indexing" or "resources have been updated" or "datasets have been updated"..... (I put those most often appearing for me) - 2 would mean two of those, 3 would mean 3 of those etc.

My current blue circle shows 3.
The top one (which is both annoying and doesn't seem to be dismissable) is something to do with the dark realms that some users seem to inhabit by preference.
The second is the is a list of my most recent update resources. I never click on the x for this as I like to keep abreast of the things Faithlife have interfered with improved on.
The third shows all the latest updates to the datasets.
I usually close this after a cursory look over.
This means that my blue dot usually sits at 2 (while I, irrationally, curse whatever 'theme changes' are)
Or at 1 when all is sweetness and light.

Strangely I have many friends in the USA (that may be because I haven't moved there).
My response when it is suggested is, that I would, but I know I am just the sort of guy who would get shot.
So thank you for the suggestion, but I'll stay in the UK where (recently) the only thing I have to duck is a punch.
