When New Resources are Released

Hi All,

I recently upgraded to a brand new PC.  Unfortunately, the hard drive space on this new PC is significantly less than what I had previously.  I will not be able to store most of my Logos resources locally on my machine.  I have changed my settings in the program to no longer automatically download new resources as they are released.  But I had thought that the program would at least notify me when new resources are released, giving me the opportunity to selectively decide which resources I do want to download locally.  Unfortunately, this does not seem to be the case.  Is there a setting that I'm missing here?  To clarify, here's what I would like to have optimally happen: when new resources that I've purchased are released, or when resources that I've purchased before are revised, I would like the program to notify me that those resources are available without downloading them automatically.  However, I would like to option to download them selectively.  Is there a setting for this?  Thanks in advance.

    Hi Irving

I have changed my settings in the program to no longer automatically download new resources as they are released.

Faithlife's catalogue of resources is updated on a regular basis and I think that if one was notified of every addition to the catalogue one would simply be overwhelmed.

Those resources you purchase from the catalogue are available for purchase immediately.

Those resources you order on Pre-pub or Community Community pricing will generate an email before your card is charged with the date that the resource is to be released.

Was there something else that I may have missed?

Mike, thank you.  But none of your replies seem to answer my queries.  I can't take the time to reword them now.  I thought I was pretty detailed and explicit the first time.  But thanks anyway.

I think it does this with the blue button - and you also will find new resources when looking at the "added" facet in the library, since Logos downloads the resource metadata to your library (provided internet is turned on), but not the resource itself if you configure it not to do that. I think this should give you what you want, the ability to download those you need selectively.

NB. Mick, thanks for the response.  By the blue button, I assume you mean the blue circle in the upper right corner area of the program.  Negative to that.  I wish it did, however.  I wish the blue circle would at least alert you to the availability of new resources and allow you to selectively download them or keep them in the cloud.  I did check the 'Added' facet in the Library and found that you were correct.  But you have to remember to proactively check that regularly.  Added resources apparently only show there for a period of 30 days.  If you don't check that facet for 30 days, you will miss knowing about some of your new resources.

    Negative to that.

Yes, the blue circle only informs one of newly downloaded resources, not newly unlocked ones.

Exactly.  And that's really the point of this post.  I wish the program had some way of alerting me that resources are available to be downloaded if desired, or stored in the cloud otherwise.

    Yes

    Greetings Irving

Reading through the responses above I think I may have gleaned a suggestion that the resources you are referring to are those you purchased from Wordsearch rather than ones you have purchased from Faithlife?

In that case, your problem will be temporary by definition. Once Wordsearch's catalogue has been completely transferred to Logos format almost all the resources you had in Wordsearch will be available to you and you can select which ones to download from among them.

While, as I understand it, the end of the year that Faithlife were aiming for turned out to be too ambitious I am sure that they are making good progress with this project and that you will not have too long to wait for the problem to disappear.

Sorry if I'm missing something here but does setting Automatically Download Updates to No in Program Settings give you what you are looking for?

    Hi Graham,

I have the setting 'Automatically Download Updates' set to 'No.'  And, as advertised, that does indeed prevent new resources that have been purchased from being automatically downloaded locally.  That part is good.  But I wish that I would at least be alerted to the availability of new resources so that I can download those said resources if desired.  I have to be selective out of necessity.  My hard drive space is limited.  So there are many Logos resources that I must store in the cloud.  But I would also like to have the option of storing new resources, as they become available, locally.  But, seemingly, the Logos application is not notifying me or alerting me to the availability of new resources that I have purchased.  I'm glad that new resources are not automatically downloaded.  But I would at least like to be notified that they are available so that I can download them and store them locally if I so desire.  I hope this clarifies.

    HI Irving

I've just tried this with Automatically Start Downloads set to No and Download New Resources set to Yes

When I purchase a resource, I do get a notification advising that a download is available as shown below:

It does update metatdata in the library and the book is shown as "downloading" - which surprised me slightly. I don't think it is actually downloading!

Do you have the same settings and do you get the same or different results?

The state just indicates that the resource is in the download queue, not that it is actually downloading at that moment.

    Graham,

Thanks.  But I suspect that when the notification says, "New Resources are available.  Click here to download them," it is still not giving you the option to select them one-by-one.  I suspect that a click would download them all in one fell swoop.

There is no mechanism to notify you when new resources are available. The best you can do is to periodically select the "Added" facet in the library sidebar to view recently added resources.

    Alternatively, you can use something like the following in the Find box: {AddedDate 10d}

    Search syntax from: https://wiki.logos.com/Library__#Search_Fields_that_you_can_use_in_the_Find_box

Correct. The ability to select which downloads isn't available at that point. If you want to manage which resources are on your device, you can do so at the LIBRARY level... You can't control which of the "already selected to be on your device" resources on a per resource basis.

    • You CAN control which resources are on your device
    • You CAN control when downloads and updates occur
    • You CAN'T select which downloads or updates happen or in which order.
    • ALL updates (resources and app) will happen at the same time when you run the command (if you don't have automatic updates enabled)

I have this situation on one of my machines. What I settled on was to leave the auto download on given that it only applies to new resources (so ones I'm likely to actually want to look at in the immediate sense) - that way I can see the notification and then decide on a case by case basis if I want to leave it on the machine. Granted this works for me because the volume of new items I get these day is pretty low.
