Bookmarks or Place holders

Hello out there,

I want to thank you for creating a 'reading list' with the iPad app. However, I am still seeking a way to 'bookmark' my spot in the desktop app that is intuitive and can be picked up by my iPad app. I currently use 'favourites' in the iPad app, which is tolerable, but not ideal. But even with that, it is very difficult to pick up my spot on my mac. I appreciate all that you are doing to innovate, and I may not speak for many people. However, I would really appreciate if there was a little more effort diverted to a smooth, cross platform way of moving through books.

So just to double-check. I had been using 'Amazing Grace 366 Hymns' with my morning prayer gathering today. I did not close the book on my ipad.

I opened Logos and went to the resource in the Library and opened it. It opened to the spot I was reading a few moments before. I do know if I closed the book on the iPad the resource would have opened to the title page.

As I understand it, the technique is not to close the book if you want the place to sync.

Your understanding is partially correct. closing the book doesn’t cause the sync to trigger. That happens automatically when connected to the internet. The reason you world want to close the resource is that a “left open” book will “stay put.” You close it only to ensure that it will open to the newest location across devices.

My suggestion of “projects” improves upon this behavior significantly and should have been implemented years ago [:s]

I don't know that I have tried this particular process, but I am jumping all over the place in my reading. I may not come back to a book in a week or so. Or I may have a few moments in a doctors office and want to pick up where I left off on my phone. I seems relatively reasonable to be able to open a book, and find whatever 'bookmark' I have in that book, a la Kindle. It seems like spending time on things like 'dark mode' is sort of like putting the cart before the horse...

Before Logos/Verbum 9, Dark Mode was far and away the single most requested feature by users. For Faithlife, not working on Dark Mode would have been a serious error.

But your argument may work with reference to some other feature(s).

Personally I agree with you - but I am alse aware that for some years, the request to have a Dark Mode capability in Logos was at the top or near the top of features requested by customers.

I guess it demonstrates the challenging decisions that Failthife need to make in terms of what they focus on and prioritise

"Alway on," automatic syncing of books may seem like a "no brainer," but it is not. Logos isn't Kindle... It is a digital search library. Someone may use their iPad, iPhone and MacBook for unique purposes. For example: A pastor may write his sermons using his desktop. His iPad is used to lead his small group bible study. His iPhone is for quick lookups on the go. Having an automatic sync between those would be disruptive to him.

My suggestion of projects solves this problem because the location data is stored with the project. If someone uses their devices in the manner I just described, then it is simple enough to have three "projects" and leave each device opened to those projects. On the other hand, if someone wants to always have the location sync automatically, all the time, then they use just one project. Lastly, if someone wants to have multiple location data points, then they can create a "project" for each purpose. If there is a need to get the location data for their sermon prep, then open up that project and all resources move to that location. If they want to switch to personal devotions, they can open up that project and their location data is left in place for their sermon prep.

This would be a significant project for Logos to tackle, but it makes sense due to the nature of the software... it isn't a simple "ebook reader," it is a digital research library.

I appreciate you taking the time to help me understand the complexities of making something like this a reality.

I also appreciate that you are taking the time to offer practical solutions that would be likely to overcome those complexities and bring about the features that many of us are hoping for.

However, please try not to read into my words a sense of, 'what's so hard about that?'. I am intentionally not saying things like, 'no brainer,' because I know how hard it is when people act as if something is as easy as 1,2,3, and it is not. I only use the Kindle example because it is something that most of us are familiar with. I am assuming that since Logos has not done this yet, it is a difficult task. I trust, and I believe they have demonstrated, that they are doing their best to serve their customers faithfully. That being said, it seems more fundamental to the process of reading, studying, researching, etc. to have a more intuitive way of savings one's spot than things like dark mode.

I hope that makes sense. Thank you again for helping me to understand some of the complications that I have taken into consideration.
