Merge Index in 4.0c Beta 2

I downloaded some new resources yesterday and I am getting the message when I do searches that they have not been merged into the main index. I thought I read something in the previous Beta that concluded there was a problem with the "merge indexes" command. Does anyone know if it is now safe to run the "merge indexes" command?

As far as I kow Merge Index still does a rebuild index, just like Rebuild Index does.

It was never safe to run that command even when it did mean merge (or imply something faster than a rebuild)!

Example: You decide to "merge" when you have a supplementary index with 5 resources. That takes 20 minutes. You download a resource and it creates a supplementary index in 5 minutes. Then you do another merge because of the nag in "New resources" - another 20 minutes. Total: 45 minutes minimum!

If you let the download decide about indexing you would have a supplementary of 6 resources in about 10 minutes.  10 minutes vs 45 minutes and the extra indexing hasn't made your searches more efficient.

I just wish Logos would get rid of that message in "New Resources" as it is misleading + the merge command is available.

That is correct. 4.0a had a merge feature that frequently caused index corruption. Logos couldn't squash all the bugs causing this corruption so they removed the true merge and now a Merge Index command just rebuilds the whole thing. They announced that it's expected to return to 4.0c. I sure how they test extensively before they roll it out into the Beta cycle.

    Dave,

Are you saying it is not necessary to merge the supplemental indexes with the primary index file?

    Yes!!

The supplemental index is GOOD as it prevents rebuilding the whole index with each download. Take advantage of it and let the Indexer decide what to do after you download resources. Note that the "merge" command actually rebuilds the index (per Kevin's comment).

    Gotcha. Thanks [:)]
