The IVP Bible Background Commentary : New Testament

My copy of this reports that it is in the last chapter of the previous book when it is in the introduction to then current book - at least it does for both Revelation and Jude.

This must be a bug?

PS the information window seems to behave erratically when hovering over words in the opening of 'Method of Interpretation'

Please will somebody confirm that these are general faults not just me having a bad Bible day.

Contents pane reflects the location of the very first line of the window Therefore....

"A" is highlighted because "B" is at the top of the screen and is in that particular section of the resource

In fact the whole linking to 'Information' seems awry.

In the section on Rev 1 : 8

Greco-Roman = Old Testament

the = Lord's Supper The

Judaism = Josephus

language = Children in Greco-Roman Culture and Society

letters = 1.Diverse Data: The Variety of Second Temple Literature

Greek = 1. History...

and so on.

Is this a resource problem or an Alpha bug?

I'm not following the logic in it at all. My apologies. Do you think you could augment your concerns in your post about this with a screen of it? I don't currently have that book on my Mac right now (for various reasons, though this will be remedied soon hopefully) so I can't test it on my mac, and saw nothing out of the ordinary on the Windows version that seemed to correspond to what you are describing. Thanks .

No problem Tommy - I hope the shots below help explain.

On both of the above I have replaced the cursor with a great big arrow. I couldn't capture the pointer. As you see the information in the information window bears no relation to the word the pointer is over. In my previous post I worked through the first sentence word by word an found the listed anomalies.

In short. There is not a problem. If you had the Collins Oxford English Dictionary you would be getting a definition for Greco-Roman. The rest of the information you are seeing in the information window is being drawn from adjacent words to where you have the mouse hovering.

"1:8. Some Greco-Roman writers called the supreme deity the “first,” but the Old Testament (Is 41:4) and Judaism (e.g., Josephus, Philo, adapting Stoic language)
Keener, C. S., & InterVarsity Press. (1993). The IVP Bible background commentary : New Testament (Re 1:8). Downers Grove, Ill.: InterVarsity Press."

The quote above is from the text you are citing, and the bold words are items in the Windows version that show up in the Information Window. The only item you are missing is the Graeco-Roman information item, which as I pointed out earlier is due to not having the book (and incidentally that is the only dictionary that particular word is in).

Hi Tommy

Just to test I went and dusted off a copy of the Collins Oxford Dictionary and crammed it into my machine. It is hard to get the back on now and bulges a little - however a new test on the first sentence of Romans I : 8 still reveals a few idiosyncrasies.

Greco–Roman = lovely £40 well spent for this word

the = Lord's Supper The (is 'the' really missing from all my dictionaries?

Judaism = Josephus (Judaism is in the Collins)

e.g. = e or g or ee :-)

language = 1. Children in Greco-Roman Culture and Society

Some of these manifestations occur in other resources so it looks as if my purchase of the Collins has only rectified some words - any more books I should get to sort out the rest?
