Names of Gods

Meditations on the names of God (e.g.  Praise the Name of the Lord: Meditations on the Names of God in the Qur’an and the Bible: Fitzgerald, Michael Louis. ISBN 9780814645727) and litanies of the names of God (e.g. Powerful Titles of Jesus in the Bible) are common across the Abrahamic religions. Therefore, they are often important in missionary and worship contexts.  Verbum reflect this interest in the Names of God interactive. This interactive has only internal documentation under “about”.

P15-1 Data

A sample:

P15-2 Sample

Note that the data is organized first by the person of the Holy Trinity. Under that are entry headings consisting of:

  • Name of God in English
  • Name of God in the original language
  • Pronunciation of the name in the original language
  • Number of occurrences of the name

If one clicks on the name in theory one gets a popup with information on the name’s various translations, their relative frequency, and distribution. Unfortunately, as shown above, Verbum fails to treat the entire name as a lexical unit. Rather, it gives the information for the individual elements within the lexical unit, data which is meaningless in this context. This is, however, a quick source for the  transliteration which is used in several of the devotional resources.

Expanding the heading displays the Bible passages with the name of God highlighted.

P15-3 Bible Ref

Both the facets on the left and the data on the right may be presented in two sequences:

  • By count
  • Alphabetic

Available facets are:

  • Person of trinity
  • Language
  • Speaker
  • Addressee
  • People
  • Places
  • Things
  • Themes

I would use this interactive more frequently if:

  • It provided the transliteration in the primary data.
  • It had a Biblical book facet.
  • There was linkage to the major resources on the names

A list of resources in my library, excluding ebooks, on the names of God. [quote]

Unfortunately, as shown above, Verbum fails to treat the entire name as a lexical unit.
This is a critical observation as well as what I will emphasize below.

I would use this interactive more frequently if:

    • It provided the transliteration in the primary data.
    • It had a Biblical book facet.
    • There was linkage to the major resources on the names

A list of resources in my library, excluding ebooks, on the names of God.

Have you collected these observations into a feature request?

Meanwhile, Jesus kept on growing wiser and more mature, and in favor with God and his fellow man.

I was thinking I ought to ... the lexical unit is a broader issue than just this interactive.
