My notebook is still churchning through the installation/ re-indexing process 11 hours later.

To save on my on-peak download allowance, I decided to wait until off-peak time to download Beta 2 for the netbook.

Problem: I start up the netbook. I start Beta 1.

nothing.......

I have restarted Beta 1 several times.... nothing.....

How can we force the install of Beta 2?

Can you post your indexer and Logos4.log here from the netbook? Can you confirm you have not yet upgraded to Beta 2 already? In Logos, go to the help menu and click about, it should say Beta 1 if you haven't. If you can confirm this I will provide you with our Beta 2 direct link, however it would be nice to know exactly why auto-updates aren't working for you.

    Thanks for the response George.

I had most definitely not updated to Beta 2 - I hadn't turned the computer on.

Anyway, after about 10 closes and restarts - leaving the program running each time for 5 minutes or more, it finally started the download.

I think that it's too late now for the log files.

I can't get the Beta 2 at all, and have confirmed that I am running Beta 1. I am not having any technical issues, and have now restarted 4.0 several times.

After the issues i posted http://community.logos.com/forums/p/1342/10659.aspx#10659 I am still on beta 1 and I am not getting beta 2.  Note no option in settings to control internet connection confirming this is still beta 1.

Ok have run setup George, didn't appear to download anything and completed fairly quickly...possibly the 25MB of data did download last time but after lock up issue for alll intent purposes L4 thought the upgrade had been done since it had completed the download and so the process to complete the install did not kick in....I'll let Bradley, Jacob and co ponder those issues between now and beta 3....

Its now doing another re-index.  I've attached logs files as they stand right now just in case the reveal any clues after beta 2 install finally completed.

Ok complete computer lock again durng the download of resources.... managed to get computer back up and running and it has resumed download around 63% of the way through.

Note I have 38.3GB of free space on C Drive at the moment so I don't see disk space as an issue.  I've got to go out soon so will have to leave computer running and see what happens.

I have not previously had any issues with the PC doing this and it only does it while trying to download updates/ install / re-index process of L4.

My desktop installed the beta 2 just fine.  Took awhile to re-index but much faster than the first.  However my laptop require me to run in Administrator mode for the update to work.  When I didn't it gave me an error saying it didn't have access to a folder in the c:\Users\my folder\local\xxxxx (can't remember the rest).  I cancelled it and restarted it in Admin mode and it worked and is now "Preparing ..."

Thanks, Andrew, got your logs, there seems to be a new kind of error I haven't seen before, were you using Logos4 at the time? If so, can you post your repro steps, it seems you were doing something with exporting to MS Outlook. Good luck with the download, keep me posted.

I apparently downloaded and installed beta 2 since the Greek morph now works.  My problem is remotely similar to Damian's in that 2 days later it is still supposedly downloading.  This creates quite a drag on the system as evidenced by the intermittent buffering of my stream of classical music.  Surely the download should have been completed long ago.

It says, "Logos Bible Software is downloading updates (8% of 603.9 MB)"

BTW:  How does one know with certainty which flavor one has?  I don't see an "About" which lists the version.

If you get into Logos4 you can click the help button, which is the '?' button to the right of Layouts button, and click on About. Has it said 8% for 2 days?? Is it using any CPU in task manager? That is very strange for it not to do anything for 2 days, if that is the case, please close Logos4, and you may end the indexer with task manager, however save the logs before relaunching Logos4.

No, I can't.  As I reported earlier "Help" is helpless -- it is blank.

No, it now says it's at 14% and the download size has changed from 6xx.x MB to 584.6 MB.  That's very strange -- I right-clicked on the icon and chose "close" then received a message that the download was ready to be installed.  I allowed installation and it relaunched 4.0.  It is now indexing.  Sorry I wasn't able to save the log, but I wasn't expecting it to relaunch.

This is a known issue listed in the Beta 2 Release Notes: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/1326/10605.aspx#10605

"Download progress is not displayed correctly by the Indexer; the total size will decrease as files complete downloading."

After all that occured before, it is now once again downloading.  Is there a loop in the program?

    Hi George,

Sorry haven't got back to you sooner. Following will explain.  What you mention would have been exporting a reading plan to Outlook at the time.  Sorry its a while ago and much happended since then to give you any more detail.

Well to cut to the chase.  I have finally got beta 2 completely installed and re-index and running... finally... gotta love betas....so much fun... hopefully there logos can get something out of my experiences.

I had a total freeze a couple more times.  I was just using the PC to do normal sort of stuff, browsing the web checking e-mail etc.  Note I did have things like automatic update of window, ant-virus scans and resident sheilds etc turned off.  What eventually allowed me to nurse the installation through was to basically let the PC sit there and do nothing whether it be in L4 or outside of L4.  The only exception to this was I ran task manager and did a few screen dumps of it at various times.  The telling thing is that CPU was close to flat lining at 100% most of the way through the indexing process.. the first screen dump shows all the process running on my PC this was around 2:50pm.  You can see there are 47 process running... Through the screenshots you will see this number stay steady from this time point.

    image

The second screen dump was a few minutes earlier (there was one extra process running, probably something in system tray I shut down)and shows the performance stats from task manager....

    image

This is processes little bit latter on... time  and indexing progress can be seen...note memory usage my indexer has shot up a fair bit....

     image

About four and half hours later.....

    image

Indexer memory usage has increased again...

    image

There are a few more screen dumps in attached zip from various times.....7367.indexing progress 5(17-09-2009 8-35-23 PM).zip

Note I did experience a crash in beta2 while using info window that I hoped was picked up in these logs but I will post detais in post-install crash subforum and provide a cross link to it in this post once it has been posted. So if the cross link is not here when you read this George, please check back later.

Hi Andrew, thanks for the detailed report! Yes the information window crashing is a known issue, and is being fixed. I'm glad you got Beta 2 finally up and running. I'm waiting on that cross link, and you mentioned it froze a couple more times, you mean during indexing? And you had to restart to fix it?

  • Simon’s Brother
    Simon’s Brother Member Posts: 6,816 ✭✭✭

    Hi George,
The cross link was going to be about the info window crash but since this is a known issue I will not put another post up about it unless you really want me to, the detail is in the logs I've just posted. Because I've had to basically stay off the computer to get the install done I am having trouble keeping up with all the posts and known issues and hadn't realzied this was a known issue.  I had not long got beta 2 installed and was just trying a few things out....

Yeap the freezes I had required turning off power to restart... no other option... these were both during dowload and indexing... once I basically left the computer alone and did nothing then the process was able to complete but as from screen dumps you see it was giving the CPU a hard thrashing all the way.... possibly this is why the freeze ups because the CPU and possibly memory with other tasks was getting pushed beyond limit of my system.  I don't normally have an issue with the tasks I do on a daily basis on the PC....maybe its just met its match in Logos 4.

Ok, yea I really don't know why its freezing your computer to that extent, maybe pentium 4 single core? But still it shouldn't affect any kind of processor to that extent, we need to figure something out. Thanks for the information.

Ok... here we go again.. .thought beta2 was finished but after shutting it down for a little bit and restarting it appears to be now back at stage 1 of preparing library.... lets see where this takes us...

Ok it was still on Stage 1,  CPU usage had been normal (25-40%),  then all of a sudden spiked to 100% for a bt and application started to load.. once loaded CPU back to expected levels and logos icon disappeared from system tray..... is this expected behaviour... sorry just a bit neverous at the moment every time I see that preparing library....

Ok thanks....I'm sure indexing speed will improve in time.....despite all the agony and out little pet things we'd like different or to be there and its not, its still a massive step foward from what I can see so far ....but would appreciate more appliation time to appreciate those things even better...

    George,

As I'm downloading updates now, 2.4 gigs - at about 1.8 now, I too am running 90-100% of my processor and have been for about an hour.

Don't know if it is really indexing or not in the background. Had one crash when I clicked on the blank space beside the Preferred Bible - sent an error message to WIndows. Downloading continued. I still had the icon on the task bar so selected Install Update. It seems to have picked up where it was despite the crash.

    Lots of heat.

After I posted I noticed that if I right-clicked on the Logos icon in the tray that it had an install feature, which worked fine. Actual upgrade time was less than an hour on both my machines.

Yea it's easy to confuse whether the indexer crashed or the app, if you take a moment when the error reporting window comes up, the title will say Logos4 as opposed to Logos4Indexer, and then you know the indexer is doing okay.

I direct a household fan toward my computers - that makes indexing go a little faster (and stops my laptop from shutting down!).

Ok thanks....I'm sure indexing speed will improve in time.....

Good news, our devs have been working on indexing speeds and they've improved rev. interlinear indexing, a test revealed an 8 hour indexing process went down to 3 hours ! So all in all we are taking steps to optimize it before we start fixing the restarting of the index part, hopefully we can get that in before 4.0. If not we will have to give it to you guys via 4.0a or something like that.
