Single, Double and Triple Click Problems

Here is what I would like to set up in my Bible:

1. Single Click- link to lemma (jump to BDAG definition) So I have set in program setting (Prefer Lemma to Yes) No problem so far.

2. Double Click in my Bible to get English Definition of my word- So I set in program setting (Lookup) I have my English Dictionary prioritized in my library over my Lexicon. When I double click I still get the lexicon. If I turn of the setting feature (Prefer Lemma to Yes) I lose the single click function.

For example the word grace in Ephesians 2:8 in my NKJV.

3. Triple Click- set to Search inline- No Problem

You get the lexicon because you have Prefer Lemma set to Yes, so when you Lookup anything it's going to look up the Lemma. You need to set Prefer Lemma to No.

Then, if you want to jump to the Greek lemma on single click, you need to have the NKJV and BDAG linked in the same linkset. If they're linked in your layout, when you single click on a word in the New Testament it will jump to that word in BDAG. The "Greek Word Study" Quickstart layout is already set up this way, so you can either use that one or you can create your own saved layout with the NKJV and BDAG linked.

Prefer Lemma only applies to the Lookup function, which only works with either double- or triple-clicking. So the benefit of Prefer Lemma is if you want to look up the Greek or Hebrew word on double or triple-click instead of looking up the surface word.

Single-click searching or lookup is only possible if you have the bible panel linked to either a lexicon, Bible Word Study guide, or search panel. (You could also use the Info Tool and set it to update on click instead of hover, which is my preferred method.) Prefer Lemma and single-clicking have nothing to do with each other.

It seems I can do three of the 4 but not all 4 without switching the preferred lemma to Yes and then I cannot double click to my English dictionary. I want to leave the setting alone without switching back and forth. Can you confirm?

Single-click only works if Bible and Lexicon are linked (preferably in different tiles). Set Prefer Lemma to No

Double-click works as expected, but it might show the lexicon before the Dictionary (relates to the speed of double-click)

What do you mean by "Search"? You can do the first three as indicated, but I doubt you can now use single-click for a different function.

Your #2 and #3 will always be in conflict because they both rely on the Prefer Lemma Yes/No setting. Right now, you're already searching the lemma in #3, you're just doing an inline search instead of opening a separate search window. So your #4 is redundant.

Single-clicking doesn't search anything. The only way you can do a search or lookup by single-clicking is to link panels as I mentioned.

But your issue is that you're trying to look up an English word in #2 and do an inline search on a lemma in #3 and that is not possible. You can either do an English word for both or a Lemma for both. In other words, your Prefer Lemma setting will impact both #2 and #3. If, however, you are trying to search inline for an English word on triple-click, and you're trying to look up an English word on double click, you need to set Prefer Lemma to No. Period, no way around it.

You will never be able to look up a Lemma on single-click by itself. The program just doesn't work that way. The only way you can look up the BDAG definition or search a lemma on single-click is if you link panels with the lexicon and search window respectively. The problem is, once you link with a search panel, your Prefer Lemma setting will determine whether you search the English word or the Greek word. However, if you link to the BDAG, you will still be looking up the Greek word on single-click.

So you can't really do what you want to do here.

My suggestion is:

1. Set Prefer Lemma to No.

2. Set double-click to Lookup (looks up English word)

3. Set triple-click to Search Inline (searches English word)

4. Open the Information Tool and add it to your layout. Set it to update on click instead of hover. This allows you to see all the word info on single-click, including the BDAG gloss. You can open the BDAG from there (Definition section), open a Bible Word Study guide from there (Word Info section, click on the lemma), and see the Louw-Nida and Bible Sense Lexicon information. If you want a bunch of at-a-glance information on a Lemma by single-clicking, the Informational Tool is the way to go.

I'm having a very similar problem... Double-click lookup does not respect priorities, and setting Prefer Lemma to No seemed to help initially when it was opening the DDD instead of the LBD but lately it seems to be opening whatever it likes on double-click.

Also... I did open the info panel and took it off of hover, but what I'd really like to do is turn off hovering highlighting/info period as it's real annoying and distracting. It would be nice if I could say, hold control while hovering and have it do that, but not do that while I'm using my mouse cursor to just track my place in reading. I'm guessing this is currently impossible though (disabling hover highlighting).

Anyway, to my first point, it might be that I'd have to add all my dictionaries and what have you to the priority list which does not sound like fun You'd think that if something isn't listed in the priorities panel it would be lower in priority than what is, but maybe this isn't the case?

The 'click' actions can be complicated as per the above discussion, but I think it best if you resolve what you want from a double-click, and understand the strength/limitation of prioritizing.

It is recommended that Double-click Action be set to Lookup, which normally acts on surface text e.g. English words in an English resource (incl. bible). The Lookup will be performed on your preferred resource e.g. an English dictionary for English words. You usually have a choice of resources, and would prefer a bible dictionary (type:encyclopedia) over a lexical dictionary (type:dictionary). So you would prioritize as follows:

LBD
bible dictionary 2
bible dictionary 3
etc.
Merriam-Webster
Concise Oxford
lexical dictionary 3

bible dictionary 2 will be used if the word is not found in LBD. bible dictionary 3 will be used if the word is not found in bible dictionary 2, etc.

If an English bible has a reverse interlinear, you can set Prefer Lemmas to YES so that the Lookup will attempt to use the underlying Greek/Hebrew lemma in a lexicon; which you will prioritize similar to English 'dictionaries' (remembering to separate Greek lexicons and Hebrew lexicons).

It can be distracting, but there is no global setting to turn it off.
