Problem with Thompson Chain Bible Book Outline

So ... I open my trusty NKJV.... then open Thompson Chain Marginal Notes and then open Thompson Chain Bible Book Outline.... and I set all of them to track on Link Set A.

But the Thompson Chain Bible Book Outline disappears and I wind up with NKJV and 2 of Thompson Chain Marginal Notes... Now... I'm a thinking that's a wee bit weird? I mean.... like ... what happens to my Thompson Chain Bible Book Outline? Am I seeing true amalgamation going on? lol

What am I doing wrong?

The Bible Book Outline will not follow along with the Link Set because it is only indexed by page number. It would need to be indexed by Bible to follow along.

The expected behavior would have been for it to do nothing instead of morphing into the Bible Book Outline, That will be a problem for Logos to look into.

Just for grins, I linked a Bible to a monograph that was indexed by page number. I thought that maybe the monograph would be replaced by some random book, but it behaved itself.

For clarification: This is an "eBook" resource which has come into Logos through the WordSearch acquisition. It does not appear to be currently for sale on FL's websites. The behavior you have described is the expected behavior for a non "logos edition" resource. It is a plain eBook, similar to a Kindle edition book.

I do not know what FL's plans are for this resource. My guess is that they would not update it unless it becomes available to be sold, which is a licensing agreement issue.

The Thompson Chain Bible Book Outlines is listed in the information panel as a Logos Research Edition in the copy that I have. It also shows up when using the Bible Outline Browser tool.

The difference that I see when comparing the Tompson Outlines to a similar book, such as Wiersbe's Expository Oulines, is in the Indexes section in the information panel. The Thompson Outline Indexes list only Page, but the Wiersbe's Outline Indexes list Bible and Page.

Ok.... Now I'm confused.... In the "Wordsearch library in Logos" which is supposed to be a listing of my library in WS and where it is at as far as being put into Logos.... that page shows "Thompson Chain Bible Book Outline" as "Available" Not "Ebook". I do have some books that actually show "Ebook".

Is there a way to determine what the book really is in my Logos library?

One way is to open your book then press Ctrl+Shift+I (on PC). You will see an image of the front cover and just below it you should see "Logos Research Edition." At least that what it says for me. Another way to see it is to do the steps for setting up the link set and then look down three entries to find "Information." Clicking on that will also take you to the same screen.

If you scroll further down, you will see an entry for INDEXES. Mine says "Page." If it also had an index of "Bible", then it would be able to follow along with any Bible it was linked to.

Other Bible book outlines that I have looked at have INDEXES of both "Bible" and "Page."

The page XNman mentions is on the Logos WEBSITE.

Gary's mention of "opening the resource and viewing the information" happens within the Logos Desktop PROGRAM.

Now we're thinking on the same side of the stream. And the real problem is ... it don't work like it did in WordSearch.

Hopefully, Logos will index it as a "Bible" and with "English headwords" like the other Thompsons books....

That depends on the precise situation - this is the function that allow you to use an entire commentary series by selecting only one resource. I do not have the Thompson Chain resources to see what the series and indexes are code to know how it should behave.

After doing some additional research, I found that the Thompson Chain Bible Book Outlines' disappearing act can be reproduced with other books in the Logos library.

For example, you can link it with your favorite commentary or Bible. Depending on the order that you setup the link set, the Thompson Chain Bible Book Outlines will either be immediately replaced with the Thompson Chain Marginal Notes resource or will be changed into the Marginal Notes resource as you start scrolling through the commentary or Bible.

Here's some additional information on the two Thompson resources that we have been discussing.

Thompson Chain Marginal Notes

Contents: A list of topics for each Bible verse. Each topic is numbered with a Thompson Chain Reference Number. When you click on the reference number, the resource Thompson Chain Reference Bible: Topical Index will be opened to the matching reference number to reveal a list of Bible verses related to the topic.

SERIES: The Thompson Chain-Reference Bible

INDEXES: Bible, Bibliographic Item, Page

Thompson Chain Bible Book Outlines (note: this is the book that has a problem)

Contents: A brief overview of each book of the Bible along with an outline of the book.

SERIES: The Thompson Chain-Reference Bible

INDEXES: Page

I found another Thompson Chain Reference book that is similar to the book outlines resource listed above.

Thompson Chain Treasure Study Bible: Book Introductions

Contents: A very brief overview of each book of the Bible. This book is geared to youth or children.

SERIES: Thompson Chain Treasure Study Bible

INDEXES: Bible

This book behaves as expected when linked to Bibles, commentaries, and the Thompson Chain Marginal Notes.

This is the way the Thompson Chain Bible Book Outlines should behave since it is the adult version of the children's Bible book introductions.

BTW: I've been very impressed with the migration of the Word Search resources. I know that is a lot of work and that getting the Thompson Chain reference resources migrated took some extra effort. Great job Faithlife! I came into the Logos family with Logos 4 and am so happy to have my WS resource here after all these years.

Until the Thompson Chain Bible Book Outlines has a index on Bible reference, it is working as expected. You need to ask Kyle to add a Bible index to it.

Thanks MJ, I've learned many things over the years from your posts.

I tried linking a variety of resources indexed by page to Bibles and commentaries and they do not change into another book. They just sit there as I would expect.

Per your suggestion, I've reported the problem to Kyle. I put the request in the Wordsearch Bible Software Forum.

xnman, you used to help me all the time when I was a new Wordsearch user. You are definitely one of the good guys.

In the old days there was a forum that you could access directly from within the application. I remember that you helped many people.

I went by the name "hillwalker" on the WS forum. One of the people who was active then was a lady who used Wordsearch and her husband used Logos. For some reason she used to report on what kind of cookies she was baking for him.
