Ethics and Logos Legacy Software and Working Reinstall of Libronix 3.0(g) Not Possible

This post was also made in the Libronix area of these Logos Forums, but I thought it necessary to post it here also because it deals with major issues other than technical problems.
Thank you in advance for your help. Is there anyone on this forum or at Logos that has access to a full stand alone (offline) version of Libronix 3.0? I found a link on one of the forum posts to a zip file, but the link appears to be dead. The link is:
ftp://ftp.logos.com/ldls/Zip/LibronixDLS-3.0g.zip
I had a Windows 7 Professional X64 hard drive issue and had to buy a new hard drive. Upon attempting to reload Libronix it would not install until after several attempts were made to install it. There appeared to be an issue with .Net Framework version 3.5 not being installed. Libronix was finally installed from Logos Bible Software Series X Disc A. After doing a license restore, I tried to load all the resources from the many discs I have bought over the years. The Location Manager said that the books/resources were being copied to the default resources folder. Yet when I went to do a Basic search, the resources would show up in the resources dialog box, but nothing happened when a link was clicked in the results box. Also, every time when a Bible search was attempted Libronix would generate the following error:
Line 687 (SearchBible.html): Invalid argument.
Shell: "lbxfile:C:%5CProgram%20Files%20%28x86%29%5CLibronix%20DLS%5CCommon%5CLDLS%5CShells%5CLDLS-en" [en-US] 2002-01-04T21:28:09Z
Addin: "BibleTools" 2002-01-04T21:13:52Z
IE: 9.11.9600.19596 0
Windows: SP1 (6.1.7601.1.0)
I attempted numerous updates and numerous restarts of the Libronix app with the same results. The pull down menu in the Bible search box would show All Bibles/ All unlocked Bibles, but there was no option to select a specific Bible version for the search. For some reason, every time I tried to perform a Bible search the search term “jewel” was in the search dialog box. The Copy Verses function seemed to work well because I inserted numerous verses into a test WordPerfect document. After Libronix was installed and updating attempted, the Help/About Libronix function showed my Libronix version to be 1.0b. That did not seem right to me.
I cannot afford to upgrade to Windows 10 or buy a new computer. That is the push by the Logos web site and its employees. It is all about the money. All I need is access to a full stand alone (offline) version of Libronix 3.0(g?) so that I can restore to an operating condition the software that I have paid for. I am on a limited bandwidth connection to the internet and software that requires me to connect to the internet every time I use it will not work for me. I have tried the later versions of Logos and do not like them. The Logos policy in recent years of requiring legacy users to connect to the internet is not part of the licensing agreement that was provided with the software they purchased especially when Logos takes down resources that would allow a legacy user to restore their software to the as purchased condition when they have a hardware or software crash. I do not want to hear that it is about the technical support because that is not true. If backups of legacy Logos installation/operating software (not resources) were made available as downloads, the average user of Logos would be able to restore their software to an operating condition without technical support and without buying new Logos software (Therein lies the problem.). Also, the issue is not about the server/storage space for the legacy installation software (not resources). It is doubtful that the installation/operating software for all Logos software packages since its inception would total 2 Gigabytes. I realize that Logos is a money making business. In the case of legacy software and legacy users, Logos has made an arbitrary, money driven decision that is designed to make legacy users buy new software. It may look deceptively good at some desired bottom line for Logos, but it is a short-sighted decision that is unethical, immoral, and unfair to its legacy users. Furthermore, how does the Logos policy affect the poor or those on limited incomes? For me personally, the effect of the Logos policy concerning legacy software is to take from me the software that I paid for. That is not right. Another problem related to this issue is that I emailed both Logos customer support and Logos technical support over two weeks ago and have not heard back from them. Every time I talk or chat with a Logos representative they are pushing me to buy new software and/or hardware. That is not, and should not be, the answer here.

It sounds like it would be worth discussing your options with the tech support team. Do you know that the latest engine is free. As I understand it you could easily be using Logos 9 with all your resources carried over. If your machine is 32bit then maybe you’d have to stick with Logos 8 but you still gain a lot without having to spend anything.

I can't remember if Logos Bible Software Series X is LDLS 3. Are your resources in *.lbxlls format?

I have the zip file, but do you have a backup of your license file (*.lbxlbk) else your resources won't be recognised?
You also need to apply the fix for IE9.

Thank you for your response and for your help. The ZIP file would be great.I had not used Internet Explorer for years and had updates turned off. When I completed the reinstall of Windows 7 on a new hard drive it automatically updated Internet Explorer to version 11. It also installed Microsoft Edge without any action from me. I checked the Windows Registry for the keys identified in the link “apply the fix for IE9”. They were not there and I ran 8473.IE9-LDLS3.zip and it put the entries in the Windows Registry. I tried to run Logos and am still having the same issue.I may try to roll Internet Explorer 11 back to Internet Explorer 9 (or earlier) if that will work. I do not use Internet Explorer for anything opting for Firefox, Chrome, and Opera instead. I am running Windows 7 Pro X64.The resources folder contains files with the extension .lbxlls . The applications files in the System folder are LDLS.exe, LDLSExec.exe, LibSys.exe, and Update.exe.I do have the licenses back up file Libronix Licenses Backup.lbxlbk.Dave Hooton said:Mike Sutherland said:

Hi, Mike.
All, I can say, is good luck. I run (only) W7, and Libronix3 plus Logos7. I never did get Libronix to run smoothly on W7. It runs ok. Others have succeeded with W10. But since I had W7 Professional, I put all my older software in W7's Virtual PC (an XP-box with older IE), and all is well.
I suppose I could upgrade my W7, but I don't want to hassle trying to install the older softwares. And L8-9 don't offer much unless you do sermons.

Thank you for your input. Do you know what version of Internet Explorer you are using? Also do you know if and what version of Microsoft .Net Framework Libronix 3 requires. I seem to remember one of the versions of Logos/Libronix I installed asked to download a version of Microsoft .Net Framework. I had no problems with Libronix 3 on my Windows 7 computer. Every once in a great while it would generate an error when a search was done, but it did not seem to affect the operation of the program. I am not sure how to set up a Windows 7 PC to operate as a Windows XP Virtual PC. I have a friend in West Virginia who might be able to help me. He has forgotten more about computers than I ever knew. Thank you again for your suggestions.

Don't laugh. IE6 (in my XP box). And IE11 for W7. But neither have been online for years (insecure). I don't remember .net as a player in Libby's world. When Logos showed up, for several years, tangling with .net was an issue. But you know more, likely.

I will not laugh. You have to use what works. I will use whatever works. I am not into updating strictly for the purpose of having the latest and greatest. I am a slow learner and once I find something that works for me I try to stick with it. I have tried the later versions of Logos and do not like them. I do a lot of writing of articles and some books and Libronix 3.0g is all I need to meet that need. God bless you.

Libronix will not operate without Internet Explorer, so try to roll it back to IE9 and apply the IE9 fix (3.0g was designed for IE8 and there is no fix for IE11). I can provide a OneDrive link for the 3.0g zip when you report back.

Thank you Dave. When I uninstalled Internet Explorer 11, it rolled me back to Internet Explorer 8 (version 8.0.7601,2400). Will that work?

I have Libronix Digital Library System installed on my Windows 10 X64 and it works fine.

That is odd. Thank you very much for that information. I believe Logos Technical Support told me that it would not run on Windows 10. Can you give me a few details about how your software is setup? Are you running Windows 10 Home, Professional, or Ultimate? What version of Internet Explorer are you running? Libronix ran fine on my Windows 7 Professional X64 machine until my hard drive crashed. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it several times, but it will not run correctly. Everything seems to work fine until I do a Bible Search. As soon as I click on Bible Search under the search menu it generates exactly the same error every time. The Bible Search dialog box comes up and it has three selections All Available Unlocked Bibles/All Available Bibles/All Open Bibles, but none of the different versions of the Bible I have in my Libronix collection are listed on the pull down menu. The search RANGE pull down menu box is also empty. Basis Searches seem to work fine.
I have done a lot of research on this problem, but I am not nearly as computer savvy as many of the folks on this forum are.
Thank you again for your input.

Libronix Digital Library System 3.0g
I am able to do a Bible search without problems.
The system was originally operating under Windows 7 and was upgraded to Windows 10 when that option was available. I don't recall changing things after Win 10 was installed, but there may have been a patch installed that I have forgotten about.

I'm curious, what keeps you using libronix? Is there some features no longer in Logos?

Thank you John for your input. There are a number of things that keeps me using Libronix. Probably one of the biggest things is a well developed sense of resistance to change. Ha! Ha! I am 72 years old and it is a little more difficult for me to learn new software than it was a few years ago. There are some operational things in the newer Logos software that I do not like. The screens in the newer versions are to busy for me and I have not been able to adjust to them so that I can effectively use the newer software. I have tried Logos 4 and 5 and am not comfortable with them. It is also a matter of the time and frustration that it takes to learn new software since I am a very busy man. Also Libronix works very well for me for the things that I do. I write a lot of lengthy articles, have written two books, and prepare all the Sunday School material that I teach. Libronix has also been very useful to me as a tool for teaching Bible Institute material and preparing tests and exams. When Logos changed the Copy Verses routine in the newer software it baffled me because it went from working really well to being cumbersome. Libronix 3.0 also works a whole lot better with the WordPerfect word processing software that I use. I can leave WordPerfect open and in a matter of seconds have a whole string of verses incorporated into my word processing document. Some years ago I had an issue with one of the newer versions of Logos not working well with the Copy Verses routine and was told that they did not support working with WordPerfect documents. They pushed Microsoft Word. I have used both programs quite extensively in my secular job. Microsoft Word is a cumbersome beast compared to WordPerfect. It uses a lot more resources to run. Its saved files take up more disc space than the identical WordPerfect files. Microsoft Word is like an adamant stone when it comes to its routines. It does not allow for user flexibility.
Another issue that I have with the newer versions of Logos is the requirement to be connected to the internet to use the software. There are many times when I cannot connect to the internet and cannot use software that requires internet connections to operate. I live in East Tennessee and we do not have access to internet service providers who offer reasonable data limits. We have limited bandwidth and software programs that use bandwidth must be limited in their use. A question for Logos, what about legacy Logos users and potential users who do not have access to the internet?

Thank you Norman for your input. There was another user that stated that he is running Windows 10 X64 and has had no issues. I guess that proves that Libronix will run in Windows 10 X64. Have a good day Norman and God bless you.

Thank you Joseph for your response. There is at least one other user that is running Libronix 3.0g that is running Windows 10 X64. I am running Windows 7 Professional X64. I had no problems with Libronix until my hard drive crashed and I had to replace it. Since I reinstalled Windows 7 Professional X64 and the Libronix software on the new hard drive, Libronix will not do a Bible Search. The Basic Search works just fine. I am reinstalling from the Libronix Series X Disc "A" and am starting to suspect that it is not a full version and cannot be used to do a fresh install. Thank you again.

We haven't had Logos on the internet in maybe 3 years or so. Logos works fine off-line. As an added bonus, it discourages book-buying for book-buying's sake. We have internet access, but choose cellular only ... travel a lot ... puts the kabosh on a lot of unhealthy web habits.
But agree, Logos wants big downloads for any sizable library. Years back, you could order a DVD from FL of the software and your library. I've not seen that for a while. But Libby (Libronix) also works great. I like the screen/font combo better than Logos.

Dave, can Logos Series X Disc "A" be used to do a clean, fresh install of Libronix or is it just an update that could be missing some files that it assumes are already installed?

Dave, I downloaded the file and it will not install. Here is my process: I uninstalled the non working existing copy of Libronix on my computer. Then I tried to reinstall Libronix using the zip file you provided. It generated an error that stated "You must run Libronix Update before you will be able to use the components included on this disc" . So, I reinstalled Libronix from the Libronix Series X Disc "A". Then I tried to run the setup file from your ZIP file I downloaded. It generated the following error: "Error Code 5, Auto Update script file not found. C:\Windows\System32\Setup\AutoUpdate.lbxupd" . I looked in the specified Setup directory and the specified AutoUpdate.lbxupd filewas missing. So I went to my Logos Series X Disc "A" an copied the AutoUpdate.lbxupd (Dated 01/11/2002, file size 175KB) from it into the specified error directory and reran your setup file. I got the same error. So I went into your zip file and found your AutoUpdate.lbxupd file(Dated 11/09/2009, file size 94KB) and reran the setup file from your ZIP file. It generated the same error. Is there something I am not doing right? Do you have a suggested installation routine for this process? An odd thing that I have noticed is that when I do a clean install from the Libronix software from my disc, it does not ask for an Installation/Activation Code. That does not seem right.
You have gone above and beyond the call of duty in trying to help me and I really appreciate it. You are a blessing.

That is best done by running PurgeLDLS.bat from C:\Program Files (x86)\Libronix DLS\System
----> click Yes or OK in the various popup windows.
It will preserve your documents, licenses and resources.
Mike Sutherland said:Then I tried to reinstall Libronix using the zip file you provided. It generated an error
Extract all the files from the zip and then run Setup.exe.
---> I had no problems doing this in Win 10 after running PurgeLDLS.bat
Note that Resources should be stored in your Users folder rather than Program Files x(86). Use Options > Resource Paths to tell Libronix where they are.

David will be along shortly, likely with his #1: note-panel size.
I continue to use Libby, but that doesn't mean Logos doesn't also have some great features.
1. Backup-ability. Logos has an obstruse method (that works). Libby is a whole lot simpler and re-memberable after FL's demise. I really don't plan on a long-term FL. That said, Libby is a copyright disaster ... meaning, easily sharable, re-using refunded books, etc. Logos fixed that.
2. Index and collection management. I'll admit, the tools in Libby are not obvious. But Logos dumped them.
3. Nifty horizontal layout list (what I use it for). It stretched across completely, instead of Logos' squished up mess. Let's me happily see my study world.
4. Font/contrast/etc Somehow the IE display engine is an easier read, than the Logos one, especially when Logos tries to hide verse numbers, footnote indicators, etc. Libby plays nicer.
5. No nanny in the background. Once you have Libby, you have Libby. You choose updates, etc. And no one scooping up your notes without permission.
6. Comfortable. I guess a lot like Kindle vs the FL apps. Certainly, the FL apps are far more powerfull. But simple laid-back reading ... that'd be Libby.
7. Bibleworks ... not Libby, but it also has some real nice features. Latest Logos is locked into old Molassas4 (the Logos engine).

I'm interested that you found it visually better. I found that reading on my computer has pushed me towards a 60hz 4k display with eye care features. Also open sans font is a favourite of mine.

I guess to each etc. Much is relative to font-size. I use a small size. But that said, my new Kindle Oasis arrived, that automatically shifts coloration by time of day. We couldn't see Amazon meeting demand much longer (this season).

The original Sermon File Add-in is the tool I miss the most from Libronix.
It allowed me to keep my sermon files as I prepare them and not need to add information to my document to import into Logos. The information was entered into the module, not my personal file.
