New user asks what version

I am looking at purchasing some portion of the Logos package or maybe just staying with the free one (currently). I like some of the basic tools such as the workflows for bible study. I don't really think I need all of the commentaries and stuff. Nor do I need a tone of different bibles. But I do kind of like knowing you have the extra resources. Any thoughts as to which version or just start off with the freebie to get used to the software? I am not a pastor or teacher and don't need those tools necessarily.

What sort of things are you looking to be able to do?

Are you interested, for example, in the original biblical languages?
Are there particular themes or topics you want to study?
Are there particular denominational focuses you would like to build up a library in?
Do you want to be able to search for particular "things" in the Bible - such as where particular people are saying something or a particular place is mentioned (even if their names are not used)?

I would spend some time getting used to the software. Go slow, otherwise you will probably spend more on packages that include resources you may not ever use. After that, you can look into all the different packages or feature upgrades. Based on your initial comments, you may want to steer towards looking at the feature upgrade packages vs the resource packages.

I would spend more time going through all the free lessons and education, then letting your interests and use of the tools drive your buying interests. Grab all the free resources and purchase the deep discounts that interest you.

Hi Tim. The Logos 9 Basic Package comes with a few Bibles including the Christian Standard Bible, Lexham English Bible and KJV, If I was starting out with Logos and it was only for my own personal studies I would add the ESV, NLT or NKJV. The Basic Package also comes with The Faithlife Study Bible. I would add another study bible such as The ESV Study Bible or another good study bible. Do some research here and choose a study bible that will best suit your needs. Ask in the forum or talk to your pastor or someone else who has experience in bible study. Then I would add a one volume commentary such as the Bible Knowledge Commentary. Then I would add another encyclopedia to my library such as the Baker Encyclopedia of the Bible. Then I would add another atlas to my library such as The New Moody Atlas of the Bible or the Zondervan Atlas of the Bible. Last of all I would add Larry Richard's The 365 Day Devotional Commentary. It will take you through the Bible in a year and it focuses on applying the Bible. You have the option of following through through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation or on an alternate plan with an old testament book then a new testament book etc. With these resources you should be set for some fruitful bible study.

Hi Tim. Since you are exploring, I'd suggest you continue with Logos Basic and use all the resources, tools, features or workflows that you have there. If you find yourself limited in some way, that might indicate where additional resources or features may be worth getting.

Logos 9 Basic provides a good starting point

Bible texts: there are traditional translations such as the KJV and modern ones such as the CSB and LEB.

Commentaries: there's the older JFB and the more recent Faithlife Study Bible Notes.

Dictionaries: the Lexham Bible Dictionary is a solid up-to-date reference.

One thing that you may find lacking is having your preferred Bible translation in Logos. Each is usually $9.99 on its own, but you can see on its product page what bundles it is part of, and you may see if any of those is worth getting. For example, what they call Legacy Library collections. These don't include features, but they include a set of resources. There are many Legacy Library collections or 'flavors'. For example, if you wanted the ESV:

There is also the Verbum Fundamentals version. I am not sure if anyone knows of a discount to bring this down to $50.00.

I am not sure all the benefits of the Verbum version, or how to get the same features in Logos, but I wanted to celebrate the church year with a lectionary, and this seemed the best way to do that.

I am a student, that uses Logos for SECULAR classes as well as my Bible study and religious classes. I bought the Preaching Suite because I wanted the word processor.

And The Britannica Great Books of the Western World Set, because it is the only digital version that I know about. This gives me ancient and medieval and early modern quotes on current events topics. Professors give me high marks for doing this and it has become a bit of my trademark. The Catholic Index in the Verbum package seems to have improved my ability to search the Great Books set.
