New Testament In Antiquity

I am study the book The New Testament In Antiquity second edition and am quite impressed. It covers the material quite well and has a great deal of of maps and images. My question is this: is there a book on the Old Testament that is similar? By that i mean a book on the Old Testament probably a survey or introduction that is rich in maps and images? Thanks!

I used them in my years of OT survey and OT theology courses. The Encountering series has a lot of maps and visuals inside. It depends on what level of depth you are looking for in your studies.

A few years ago I went on a tour of Israel and Jordan. It was a great experience, I was baptized in the Jordan on my birthday. I didn't want to come back home and I have wanted to go back for a longer period of time but with COVID at least right now that is not possible. I have wanted to travel to the lands of the Bible and study there for an extended period of time. Since I cannot do that now I am trying to recreate the experience. One of the things I liked was visiting the locations and seeing various things. Hence the idea of study resources with maps, charts and images is important to me. I plan to use extensively Mobile Ed courses and other video resources that I have access to in an attempt to create the experience of "being there." The use of maps will be important to me in order to get a grasp of the distances between locations. Also important will be history, geography and archaeology to build depth to my background studies. Of lesser importance will be a study of apologetics, especially related to the New Testament. In the past I have watched some pastors such as Mark Driscoll who have travelled to Israel and have produced video sermons on location. I will need to find more of these. Viewing these will also be important in my study. The difficult part of recreating the experience will be fellowship with other Christians. When I was on the tour I had opportunities to visit and interact with other Christians on the tour. I am not sure how I am going to do that. My church is very small so I will have to reach out beyond my congregation. I will have to locate some Christians who may be interested in my project where we can interact on Zoom or create a blog where people can interact with me. Another option is that I am aware of a website where I can create a course and offer it there for a fee. Usually these courses are shorter in duration but I think this option may work for me. I need to pray about how to accomplish this. I have not set a time period for this as I am just starting to build my curriculum and launch it in the new year. I suspect at least a 2 year project, probably longer. I realize that this is far short of an actual tour to the Holy Land. However, when I have completed my project I will have a better grasp of the Bible and the land of the Bible and the restrictions should have been lifted and it will be easier to make the trek again. So I will celebrate by revisiting the Holy Land. Any recommendations that you may have regarding my project will be greatly appreciated.

To understand the importance of belonging to the house of Israel, it is helpful to learn how the house of Israel began. Sometime after 2000 BC, Jesus Christ appeared to Abraham and made an everlasting covenant with him. The Lord promised Abraham and Sarah that their descendants would be offered all the blessings of the gospel. These promises and blessings are called the Abrahamic covenant. If you don’t have one already, buy a good Bible atlas.

Zondervan Atlas of the Bible, by Carl G. Rasmussen. This is a revision of Rasmussen’s excellent NIV Atlas of the Bible. This was the first atlas I seriously read and used, and its text is excellent. Dr. Rasmussen has spent many years teaching in Israel and his atlas gives you the benefit of this time. His Essential Atlas of the Bible is an abridged version that’s still very accessible.
The Satellite Bible Atlas, by Bill Schlegel. A new Bible atlas with 85 full-page color maps. The biblical events are marked on enhanced satellite imagery, accompanied by geographical and historical commentary.
The Sacred Bridge: Carta’s Atlas of the Biblical World, by Anson F Rainey and R. Steven Notley. I’ll be honest: this is my favorite. It’s pretty dense and scholarly, but it makes good use of original sources and languages. It’s also expensive, but I always appreciate the detail and insights it gives me every time I open it.

Thank you so much Christian for your help. You put a lot of effort in your replies to my questions. I actually have many of the Logos resources that you have recommended. My costs in acquiring those that I do not have will not be as great as might be expected. I agree that a blog and Zoom would be the best option. What the OT Authors Really Cared About are great surveys along with the Zondervan ones. The Encountering books have some great stuff too and the Genesis one is on sale this month. Bible Manna Maps has an app you can pay $6 for and get a whole bunch of maps and they have more online.
