How to link to a particular monograph?
I thought I knew how to do this, but I clearly don't!
I am working through an edition of Augustine's confessions. I just highlighted a passage, and added it to an open note. But if I click to the reference in the book, it goes to another translation of Augustine's confessions in my library! I don't think either is in my prioritized resources, and adding the desired translation to prioritized resources didn't change the behavior. Can this be done? Thanks!

This is the old reference vs. selection issue - selection goes to the specific text/resource while reference goes to the highest priority edition. The default is reference.

When you create a highlight, it automatically creates an anchor ... that is how the system "knows" where the highlight goes. The defult is reference which is what you are seeing. Are you on a Mac? I'm having trouble figuring out where you see the snippet you show.

Yes, it's a Mac. As soon as I let up from completing the highlight of some text, that pops up.

Ah, the selection menu which I always keep turned off in the Program setting. I don't see how to change from reference to selection in the selection menu. Perhaps someone who uses it can answer.

If you right-click on the selected text, then choose "Selection" on the left side of the popup menu, you can then add the note to whatever notebook you want to add it to (just click "Add a note" to add it to the default notebook). The link in the note will then be to the specific selection in that resource, not to the reference.

Thanks Rosie, that's not quite right on a Mac, but I figured it out from your post. From the snippet I showed in the third post, if you click the three dots, then the menu you show comes up. Then I can change it.
So my last question (I hope lol) - why does it take so many operations to have a text reference itself, instead of ;highlight-then click' to add the note as I do now? Is there any way I can change the reference text from the other book that I am not even reading? This is almost unusable it someone is highlighting a lot of notes through a text!

Greetings Pater
I was trying to answer your last question when I realised that I did not really understand your first.
My answer was going to be along the lines of...
1. Open a book
2. Find the menu and make sure that 'selection (or reference)' is set. It should remain that way until changed so you only need to do this once.
3. Highlight required text and hit 'Add Note'.
But I think I am missing something from your earlier question?

Thanks MIke. I did not realize it was a one-time set it to Reference or Selection. But I tried that, and there is no change in the note created. Here is a picture. Note in the list of Notes, for awhile they were C2:T21C - that is what I am reading, click there it goes to that note in the resource. But lately, they are all Augustine, Confessions, click there and it goes to another resource! The note contents itself itself is C2:T21C. When I hover, you can see it's text in the other resource. Why are the notes going to another resource, per the red arrow?

There is a bug lurking here!
I had created two notes:
- one from Confessions 1.1 in NPNF 1.1
- different text from Confessions 1.1 in The Confessions of St Augustine (CSA)
The Anchors reflected their source, but hovering the header in Compact view as you did shows the text from one resource; which is the one I have prioritized. If you go to Preview view, does this show you anything different?
The circled hyperlink shows the same popup from the prioritized resource. The adjacent hyperlink (CSA, NPNF1.1) reflects the actual source.

And as you see from these 2 pictures, on hover they do show two separate resources. Note, I do NOT have any of these resources in my priority list.
There is always a default, so you change that by prioritizing the other resource.

Dave I tried that before, and I just added it to Priorities again, and closed/reopened the resource....the behavior is still the same. This is just so obscure or not working right, I guess I am going to have to live with it - very discouraging.
EDIT: I see what the culprit might be in a sense, there is a "Works of Augustine" Index that these 2 and other resources have. That index must somehow being used and is messing up how this works.

I've asked Faithlife to comment on this.

The preview view looks strange - it has both in the anchor if I understand the terminology! And as you see from these 2 pictures, on hover they do show two separate resources. Note, I do NOT have any of these resources in my priority list.
These screenshots look like everything is operating how I would expect.
As you point out, there are two links. The first link has the title of the reference, and will take you to your top prioritized resource containing that reference (noting that all resources have a default prioritization that is used if you don't customize it). Hover shows a preview of the resource that you will go to if you click the link.
The second link is an abbreviation of the resource where you took the note. That link takes you to the place where you took the note.
I'm afraid I don't see what's wrong here. Is there something else I'm missing?

Hi Andrew, thanks for the explanation, but why do they sometimes get added like the first circled entry, and sometimes like the second? Setting the default to Selection or Reference does not seem to change this behavior.
I don't know what default you are referring to. Where are you changing this?
Exactly what mechanism are you using to add these notes? There are a number of different ways to do it. Can you give me the exact steps you are using?

The one scenario where this will definitely happen is if the text of your selection does not include text from any specific reference. For example, if you are just highlighting the heading:
Note that the navigation box has a page number rather than an Augustine, Confessions reference.
In this case, the created note will just have a link to the resource and not to a reference.
If this is not what is going on for you, can you select one of those notes and take a screenshot of what the anchor and text look like in the note details?

I think I have it figured out now, some other things were happening.
1) The Augustine resource I did not want referenced was in my Priorities! I had the Fathers of the Church series from CUA in my list. So I just slid the Augustine Confessions book I am reading above it. Now when I click on a reference in my Notes it goes to the right book!
2) The reason for the difference in the two pictures above, some saying C2:T21C and the other Augustine, Confessions n.nn.n, is as you said - I had a number of notes from the rather long introduction that had no reference. Once the proper of the book began, it shows the reference and C2:T21C.
Thanks for all the help, I think everything is explainable now. Boy that was obscure!
