Help with Hebrew

Hello everyone - I have not had the opportunity to study Hebrew (zero) . I bought Zondervan's course and need to start it, but in the mean time I wonder if you can suggest some resources that help know what I am looking at in the OT?

I know its a pretty broad question, but any input is appreciated. Thanks

Yes indeedy ... that seems a pretty broad question. What you're looking at ... Hebrew? Or special issues learning Hebrew? Or the types of Hebrew in the OT? Or what parts of the OT are best, when learning Hebrew? Or maybe an intro to either Hebrew, or just Hebrew (the semitic language, or just the literal language)? Not trying to be humorous ... just narrow down?

I'd like to know the approach the Zondervan course uses. I always liked an inductive approach (start with a passage and learn grammar and vocab as you go), but that only worked for me if I could supplement that approach with some rigor to learn the paradigms.

Although I had already completed my language studies before getting Logos, it seems like a great tool to have while you're learning. (But it might be too easy to use it as a crutch instead of actually learning and memorizing. Kind of like having an interlinear on steroids, which is a no-no. I hope your discipline is solid. [:)])

But as DMB said, it's a broad question. Maybe you can figure out what you need as you go along.

Zondervan is waaaay too slow! Futato is a dynamic teacher and has a better style than Van Pelt.

Thanks for the replies. Basically I am frustrated to be at the mercy of a commentary or worse, to not understand what the commentary is saying. Case in point, today I studied 2 Sam 7, vs 19 has some different translation choices (ESV vs NIV + footnote in the NIV). I am not equipped to understand the reasons......

I think I am going to have to start studying Hebrew,.......I wondered if there was a resource that went clause by clause (in English) or something like that.

Personally since you have zero experience I would recommend starting with Hebrew for the Rest of Us and to get the basics down before you dig into a full blown study with either Some may say this is too long approach but if you are not on a short timetable, spending six weeks (or less if time allows) learning the basics is worth the extra time, particularly the time you have to devote to studying the language each day is limited.

One of the major goals of this resource and the companion Greek one is so that you habe the knowledge to be able to better read more advanced commentaries so for you this might be an approach that helps you in your goals with commentaries to make some early strides towards that while you then dig more deeper into Hebrew.

Hebrew for the rest of has a lot of bad reviews because it gives you more than the basics and assumes you know English grammar really well. Greek for the rest of us is actually different and it explains everything clearly. Maybe Mounce is better organized and the better teacher.

Futato’s course is more complete and it won’t waste your time by taking for the rest of us first and then start all over again with a more advanced course that will give you the basics anyway.

What would be a good interlinear on steroids --- I just want to look at a passage and click on an english word and see the hebrew definition --- and also to see where that [specific] Hebrew word is used elsewhere. I look up Hebrew with a New Strongs dictionary of Hebrew and Greek words which gets me part way there. I have free starter 8 I believe upgrade to free 9, and have been told by folks in sales I at least need either Academic Essentials or Silver Logos. Is there a different way to accomplish in your understanding, and which bullet would you suggest I bite. Over 70 and also trying to be wise with expenditures

That will most likely cripple you from ever learning the language. Almost everyone who uses an interlinear fool themselves into believing they are reading the original language when they are actually reading English.

Logos had some very good basic Hebrew resources; HB 101 has already been mentioned. FL recently released A Modern Grammar for Biblical Hebrew by Garrett and Derouchie https://www.logos.com/product/201447/a-modern-grammar-for-biblical-hebrew

There is also https://www.logos.com/product/3438/learning-biblical-hebrew-a-new-approach-using-discourse-analysis by Bryan Rocine.

Each of these resources use a different approach: Futato is most traditional, Garrett & Derouchie mix discourse analysis with traditional grammar, and Rocine is strictly discourse analysis. I have not read all of Garrett, but I am impressed so far.

Having dipped my toes in Biblical Hebrew courses, I offer a polite suggestion.

a 3 year old can properly state "I want cake!" (Basic language skill) but a more-advanced understanding will parse the difference between "I want you to give me some cake" and "I want cake from you". These subtleties can best be detected by someone PROFICIENT in a particular language. Therefore, I commend your desire to understand what the commentator (presumable an advanced learner) says about a text for the benefit of a (basic) reader.
