NIDNTTE Questions

1. Can someone point me to a decent critical treatment of the TDNT issues, other than Barr or Silva. I am reading Silva (Biblical Words and their Meaning, not his WTJ review which I would like to read but it's hard to obtain) on this now and he repeats Barrs concerns with which he appears to largely concur.

2. For those who have and use both TDNT and NIDNTTE what do you find to be the strengths and weaknesses of each?

Not sure if it is as in-depth/critical as you're looking for, but if you are looking for another voice, there is some discussion of it in Peter Cotterell and Max Turner's "Linguistics and Biblical Interpretation". See chapter 4 in particular (which includes a section "Responses to Barr"). FWIW, I strongly recommend the new Concise version of the NIDNTTE. In it, you will find some of the reasons for and against the TDNT and the versions of Brown and Silva. The usual person wants to dig for understanding without digging themselves into a hole that they cannot get themselves out of again will appreciate the meat of this edition.

William Varner gave this edition a thumbs up.

I’m so lucky I got the full version by Silva for $79 during a sale years ago when it first came out! The Zondervan Encyclopedia of the Bible was super cheap too, but I regret not getting it (5 volumes). Maybe some day it’ll be super cheap again.

Are you familiar with Exegetical Summaries published by SIL?

Here is just enough to whet an appetite to buy the book/series.

ES breaks down the passage into possible discourse units and documents which resources support the various claims. I appreciate that is raises a question, then provides multiple possible answers to the question, leaving the final conclusion to the exegete.

This is similar to what is done in the Lexham Research Commentaries. LRC includes more current commentaries, but is not complete (John is still in pre-order).

I have both, but since I got the NIDNTTE, I do not use the TDNT anymore. I find NIDNTTE much more user-friendly, and I am persuaded that TDNT often falls into parallelomania. I also like the way that NIDNTTE works backwards too, where you can find the words associated with a particular concept.
