So Many Books

I have 5000+ books in my library. When I look through the monthly sales each month I discover that I have some very good books that I have forgotten and never use. After I have invested so much $ in Logos this causes me some concern. If you have been around Logos for any length of time I am sure you have experienced the same thing, I was wondering if you have developed some ways to get those forgotten books into the forefront in my study?

I have thought the same thing, but in my case I have just under 12,000 resources. I can't provide any tips to answer your question, but I am grateful that you raised the question. Maybe you can find some peace knowing that you are not alone in feeling the way you do.

Just yesterday I bought under $20 of resources (mostly from the free book of the month promotion in which you can "get another resource for $1.99" and so on). I'd like to think I will crack the resources I bought. Of course, I justified the purchase because the resources were marked down. What's $20, right? Well, it's $20 that I will never have again to spend.

Ted, Thank you for your wonderful post. I agree wholeheartedly as a user for a good while and I have a large library. It is over 4500+ resources. I am grateful for all of what Logos and Faithlife has done to give us a good library. I am a better Christian, a better teacher, and a better writer because of Logos Bible Software.

A few things:

After Logos made the enhancements to the taskbar, I made a folder labeled "To Read." I put shortcuts to FBotM, new acquisitions from base library upgrades, etc. that I've purchased that I want to read at some point. That keeps them in a highly visible place I check frequently.
I also occasionally review my purchase history at logos.com to see if there is anything I've purchased and forgotten about.
Finally, before I buy a new library package, I make a PDF of the webpage showing only the books in the package that are new to me so that in the future I can review what titles I got from it.

Other than that, I don't track them. I am pleasantly surprised when new dictionaries or other reference works pop up in Factbook. I also just about always get the free/deeply discounted commentary volumes that are offered along with the FBotM like this month's. They greatly enhance my passage studies. At this point, my library has grown enough that very frequently when I hover over a reference link in a work I'm reading, a preview of it will pop up because I already have it in my library. Having a library big enough to provide that synergy is worth it even if it means I can't remember what all is in it.

No, but you now see why some of us keep begging Faithlife to exposes more of the library metadata so we can search resources that are not searched by the guides e.g. type:sermon without sermon labels (this one we can do) or church fathers not in the automatic church father collection , , ,

I read + highlight. I also check out every hot read blue superscript.

As I read the superscript, I wonder to myself if I own the book the author mentioned.

I go to my library + look the book up.

Say that I own the book.

I highlight the superscript. One could use Solid Colors yellow to highlight that superscript.

I use Logos at a very primitive level, so if it is me you are asking the question of, I bow to the superior knowledge and ability of those who are much ahead of me.

You ask a great question Ted. I too have many more books in Logos than I have ever purchased in print. I used to think that my print library of over 2,000 books was huge but now in Logos I have over 10x that amount. I am very aware that we are accountable to use all of our resources in life for the glory of God and that includes Logos resources.

The way that I approach this is as follows:

I view the majority of my books really as a reference system for finding information and never plan to actually read them. e.g. encyclopedias, lexicons etc.
I've carefully tagged all of my books so that I can easily find them according to my tags - This is the system that I use which I've often shared with this community and I'm constantly adding to it. - 6518.My Tagging System for Logos.docx Yes it takes a long time to tag but the very process of going through a book to tag is helps me to familiarize myself with it which has huge value in my opinion.
I've tagged every book that I want to read with BooksToRead-(Category) which allows me to quickly survey books from a category that I would someday like to read. For those books that I'm currently reading I use the tag BooksReading which allows me to quickly sort that way.
I also realized that life is short and there are many books in my library that I will probably never read or even use. I also remind myself that many of these books that I will never read or use came as a result purchasing new Logos packages at highly discounted prices which often include books like these.

Most of my books in print have now been given away other than ones that I've not yet replaced in Logos or I've kept for other sentimental reasons. Compared to my original print library Logos is much more effective. Although I had categorized the print library carefully I could often not find what I was looking for and I often didn't own anything on a specific topic. Logos has changed all of that and I can usually find what I'm looking for quite quickly.

My system is not perfect but it is the best I have come up with so far but I will continue to monitor this thread to see if I can pick up something new.

Thanks Ted for your post. You already have some great suggestion. You also might want to consider using shortcut folders or favorites for this. My preference is favorites. You can set up a folder in favorites and title it Forgotten Books or perhaps Hidden Treasures or something like that. Then within that folder you can set up sub folders for different books of the Bible or for different topics such as "Life of Christ." When you are searching your library or otherwise come across a treasure that is in your library place a link to it in your favorites folders. You can later review your favorites and quickly see the books that you have identified as important works.

I prefer tagging books that I want to read. That helps me rediscover them faster.

I also tag books my wife is likely to read. She loves me for that.

My current list of absolutely-must-read-next books has grown to 268 volumes, so shortcuts would not work best for me.

Good question. For commentaries, the passage guide brings up a list of relevant titles. My primitive way to search for other topics is to search a keyword in the library. Am learning from the replies of other more seasoned users.

I rely on Logos to find me the most relevant information when I run a search. While I do read a few books cover to cover, most of my reading is based on the results that the Passage Guide, searches, Factbook,... display.

I appreciate the thoughts of everyone in this thread. I have found long ago, that one can have tooooo many books.... and for me anyway, how do I remember where that pertinent piece of information was in all them books on the shelf when I need it.

A preacher friend of mine actually came up with the idea of building a database and cateforizing information as he studied and read. I followed his idea and started years ago, buidling a database of information as I studied, or read my books on the shelf. It slowed me down...but in the long run it was worth it ... as I found I did use and re-use information from my books. Sad to say, as I have moved from one bible program to another ... my books on the shelf and my database of them just didn't keep up. I gave some of my shelf books away, to such as now I have very few actual books on the shelf. And my database is now not useable.

In Logos... I have played around with the guides, collections and Factbook and such... to me... I find the info from them... lacking many times. Seems I am not set up right with my collections or something...

I agree upfront.. it's me... but seems like I spend an inordinate amount of time going through guides, search and Factbook and Explorer, etc... just to find that quote or info that I'm looking for at the moment.

Because of all that... I am now... building a database of my Logos library with Personal Books. It's time consuming... but in the long run, I think it's worth it. I just have not come up with a way... to categorize the information in a single personal book yet. I started with 3 pb's.... One for "People and Happenings", one for "Cross-References" one for "Verse Data".

I have not found a way to incorporate the 3 into 1.... and I don't think what I am doing is the better way... it is an experiment of learning to find a better way.

And that's why I am thankful for the thoughts in this thread.

Yep. That's me. Setting up a tagging system early-on does wonders later. Then when I want to dig down, it's simply a matter of selecting the tag ... typically 5-10 books presented. I do have a tag called 'ReadLater' ... it's maybe 10 years old now.

Like many of you who have posted in this thread, I continue to buy Logos books that I will probably never read. I buy them discounted or part of packages and justify the purchases in two ways: 1) It broadens my resource base for searches and 2) someday my Logos library can be willed or donated to a young pastor or seminary student who may actually use what I have neglected.

Yes, I have also run into this issue and accidentally repurchased books I already had. In addition, sometimes, Logos has resources that contain two books in one resource. However, I have them already individually.

My problem is different. I sometimes purchase a book and then a later revision comes on board and I wish I had waited for it. Grasping God's Word is in the 4th edition. Or sometimes I have taken a course and the links in the course refer to an older edition than the edition that I have in my library.

You can also do things like "Facilitate Serendipitous Discovery in Dictionaries," or any collection you have.

I can't seem to duplicate this. If I put FSD in the GO box I get a Factbook result for the river Sud. This happens with or without the quotation marks.

I recently upgraded, and when I ran the same searches, I got LESS results not more. And what I did get was way down the list after a bunch of empty categories. Something about the new upgrades I purchased for logos, or maybe the update for Windows overwhelmed the toy of a desktop PC that I have hooked up to my large monitors. My searches are sluggish and sometimes I cannot even type at full speed. Not only did I resort to keyword searches in Logos, I closed Logos and started keyword searches on Google.

I have been watching some old videos for earlier versions of Logos and I am finding some of those more helpful than new ones.

I am just finishing up a paper, and today is not the time to be studying how to use Logos. After I finish this paper, it is back to more training. Throwing money at Logos is not turning out to be the most efficient way to finish these papers.

It is the New Year. A time for fresh starts and austerity. I need to stop buying anything period, but especially random collections that look like the best buy for the least money. I need to pay down this debt, and take inventory of my whole life, not just my Logos Library or even all my digital libraries. The year is a cycle. I guess I am on track, mostly. No matter what, it is what it is, and I have what I have. It is time to embrace all thing January, and start fresh, including my hot mess of a library in Logos.

I had the same experience with previous computers. On this current computer (which is about 10 years old), I changed the hard disk to an SSD, and finally Logos is usable. The difference was night and day. Previously, I would use the mobile app much more than the desktop program.

Yes, I too have not come to the point of spending time really digging into how it works/can work. But sometimes a quick online search can throw up a useful tip or two. For example, I once found and successfully followed instructions for creating a reading plan, which was what I needed just then.

I need to stop buying anything period, but especially random collections that look like the best buy for the least money. I need to pay down this debt, and take inventory of my whole life, not just my Logos Library or even all my digital libraries.

I wish you good progress! Like you, budget is limited for me, and I ask myself if I have a specific NEED for a resource or collection, otherwise I will refrain from purchasing, even if it's only $0.99...

First Centuries & Impact of Hellenisation on Jewish Culture
Josephus
Philo
Qumran
Targumim and Translations

Medieval Rabinic Theology
Hasidic Tales & Later Literature
Jewish Mysticism
Jewish Life and Thought until Modern Times

There may be subshelves in the shelves or not. Here I place every book after I have bought it.

In this way I have perfect control over all my books and can use this system to access each book according to my actual reasearch theme and easily find books, even if I have not the exact title or author in my mind. I quickly find it just in the thematic order. Time by time I go through all my bookshelves = Favorites and check if there are some titles misplaced in a wrong category or fine tune by creating better fitting subfolders.

Favorites are a perfect way to manage book titles. So I have a subfolder "Migne:Patrologia Greaca Cursus Completus. There I place in order

Patrologia Graeca Tomus I: Introduction an Commentary
Patrologia Graeca, Tomus I: Greek Text - 1. & 2. Clemens, Didache
Patrologia Graeca, Tomus I: Latin Text
Patrologia Graeca, Tomus II: Introduction and Commentary
Patrologia Graeca, Tomus II: Greek Text - Hermes, Clemens etc.
...
Patrologia Graeca, Tomus XVIII: Introduction and Commentary

In this way i can access the correct volume of the Churchfathers I like to read in Greek or Latin with the textual commentary because the title is not sufficient for this. Here is only the volume given (eg. Tomus XIV) but not the respective Churchfathers which the volume includes (eg. Origenes Philokalia).

There is actual no possibility to search in the Favorites, but I hope sometimes this features will be added. Sometimes I'm not sure in which category=Subfolder I placed a title I'm looking for. Then I have to go through the Favorites to find it. This has the good side effect that in this way I scroll through a part of my library and get aware which books I have and may detect some interesting books this way which I had not in mind.

Logos is an amazing bible program. My sincere appreciation and thanks to all the developers and to Bob Pritchard the genius who brought Logos to life. This opens up a totally new way of reading the bible and access this huge ammount of Christian scientific and edificational literature marvelous tagged to access directly from the commentary and article the the there referenced books with one mouse move.

... and I forgot to mention one specific advantage of managing the library in Favorites: You can also include into you library epub-Files, pdf-files and htm-files simply by drag and drop them from the filemanager into the Favorites folder. That ist very practical. In this way I can directly access not only my logos-files but all other books and include them in the right book-shelve, so to find all available books with one thematic aspect and open them there with one mouse click.

I want to remove an item from within another folder.

Logos Help is no help in it's Fav. info.

Can someone please tell me how to do the above?

I can believe that this is a great help once setup. But I don't have the time to sort all my books.

Essentially, I see my library as a big database, and use Logos to find relevant information, either using Guides or searches.

There are two essential advantages of this method:

You have to take a close look to each book you have bought to put it in the right shelve and get thus aquainted with your library

and you don't buy too much at once, for you know some work is to be done to Integrale the books in your library that keeps you on pace: you swallow only as many books as you can "digest" in acertain time. [;)]

Sorry I was not clearer before. My desktop is pretty fast, I did not have to wait at all. On my laptop, I just tried it, and would have been confused too! For me, picking a collection that might have some interesting chapters or articles is more useful than a pure FSD on my whole library. As I mentioned before, I made a collection with the rule tag:BibleDictionary and called it dictionaries. FSD in Dictionaries is a delightful way to learn something I never knew I didn't know.

I finished and submitted my paper today. I have some time now to use the next topic to practice using Logos, without needing the search results NOW.

I tend to get a little frantic when a paper is due, or worse yet, overdue. I start clicking and buying and clicking some more. The emails says sale. Buy some more. Click some more.

I have more time than money for January. I plan to use what I have. The luxury of a little time.

I don't plan to return anything. I did that once before and don't want to do that again. Peeling back dynamic pricing is messy, and I only want to try that again as a very last resort. And things can only be returned twice, and I don't know if there is overlap from the last return. I think I need to just sit tight. Return nothing. Buy nothing. Reinstalling Windows 10 and a fresh copy of Logos drastically increased my search speeds! Note that I did also switch from Verbum to Logos and that could possibly be a factor, but I don't think so.This drastically reduced my search times. The software is so much snappier!

But my search results are even worse than they were. I thought with the upgrade to Bronze that maybe Logos might work as well as Verbum for me, now. It doesn't. Verbum still grabs my library better than logos. But at least the software is working faster. And I do need to learn to search and tag and all my stuff, so using logos will force me to do that.

I still have Verbum on the laptop and I am not touching that for now, even though it is so slow. Both machine slowed down at the same time, when they both got the same Verbum updates and upgrades and Windows updates at the same time.

For reference my desktop is little more than a toy. It has an SSD, but it is a plastic mini PC with 8GB RAM that isn't much bigger than a deck of cards.

Thank you to everyone that posted. Now I will start reading the thread over and get busy organizing almost three thousand books.

This also gave me the idea to run an FSD on my Fortress Press collection and add the shortcut to my toolbar. You could create a collection of books by your favorite publisher and put a shortcut on your toolbar that runs FSD on that collection with one click.

Yeah, and I love reading random things (via FSD) in my collections of essays and festschrifts, things that can comfortably be consumed in a single setting. I make shortcuts and I need more room, but it's a fun distraction.
