Books on Suffering

My friend has asked me for book suggestions on suffering in Logos 9 Gold. She is also willing to purchase a book if it is less than 30$. She wants to know if suffering due to mental health is from God. She is a Pentecostal now and a former Roman Catholic.

Martin Hall

John Piper has some good books on the topic. He did put out a free resource on Coronavirus, I think last year, maybe the year before. Regardless, he does do a mini deep dive into the topic of suffering in one of the chapters. I believe the resource is still free in Logos.

Not in Logos, but a great book on suffering is Scott Cairns' The End of Suffering: Finding Purpose in Pain.

As for the suffering of mental illness, I'd recommend any one or more of the following:

John Swinton's Finding Jesus in the Storm: The Spiritual Lives of Christians with Mental Health Challenges
Elahe Hessamfar's In the Fellowship of His Suffering: A Theological Interpretation of Mental Illness—A Focus on “Schizophrenia”
Matthew Stanford's Grace for the Afflicted: A Clinical and Biblical Perspective on Mental Illness

None of the above three are in Logos 9 Gold, but they are each < $30.

I have read The Gift of Pain by Frederick Marks, which, at <$6 USD right now, is what comes to mind for me.
