Logos and Siri

http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/#siri
It would be cool if someday we can just speak to Logos:
"What's that verse that says we can never be separated from God's love?"
"What does the Bible have to say about divorce?"
"How did Absalom die?"
"How are Jesus and Ruth related?"
"How far away was Tyre from Jerusalem?"
"How many years were Jesus and Malachi apart?"
"Go to Acts 9 in NIV and CUV."
OK, I don't have to speak to Logos... if I can type in natural language questions like the above and get answers from my library, it would be very sweet.

Most people seem very critical of the iPhone release, but I agree with you. Siri looks great. I am really drawn to Siri. I would love to be able to keep my phone in my pocket or set up appointments while driving. I'm definitely going to wait until some real-world reviews come out before jumping at it though.

I just wonder why they chose to name it "siri", Which is "buttocks" in Japanese. Possibly they have already conceded the Japanese market. [:D]

I'm wagering someone forgot to do their homework. Of course in Japan it may be titled something else.

I prefer not to carry on conversations with machines. I like my personal relationships with persons.
For a brief while, Coca Cola tried some talking vending machines. People didn't like them. However, things may have changed. They may have been ahead of their time - and my time, too.
But I don't find it much to get excited about. Will stick with my old iphone 4. It already does more than I want it to do.

At present there is no work of an SDK that allows devs to hook into the Siri tools. I'm guessing that once they get it out of beta that at next years WWDC they will open it up and maybe by then the Logos iOS app will have the basic tools and they can begin adding this. It would be awesome to talk to my iPad.

I agree, except my interest would be in talking to my phone. The idea of being able to leave my phone in my pocket while carrying on business is very compelling. However Apple is 100% correct. If they don't get get this right it will be a very heavy black eye. It needs to be able to understand me correctly the first time, at least 95% of the time. We are, understandably so, more forgiving of other people when we are misunderstood then we are of our gadgets.

My thoughts on Siri and other apps (such as Logos):
The idea of interacting with a computer through voice is obviously not new. What is new is a device that actually works well. I don't think we will see third party integration for a while, but when the idea of vocal interaction with computers has come up in the past, the idea was still too... "jetsons." With the iPhone 4s, vocal interaction is a reality. It seems like just a matter of time before we would be able to do something like this with Logos (even if it is 5-10 years down the road).

After thinking about it a bit I'm glad they didn't name this thing the iPhone 5. When Siri makes it to 5 it needs to work really well. If it gives a really good "demo" on the 4S then it will be seen as a major feature of the 5 when they've had a chance to work out some bugs.

Funny, I struggle because I feel the other way around. At least when machine start to argue with you you can CTRL+ALT+DEL. :-)

What bugs does it have?

Don't know but it's Beta. I've never known a Beta to not have bugs, though Apple is more particular then most about what they release to the public. My guess is that as it sees real world usage they will tweak it to return better results. Even without bugs, I bet they find things to improve.

Wiki Logos 4 Keyboard Shortcuts For Mac includes link => Apple Support article has lots more that has:
Option-Shift-Command-Esc (hold for three seconds) to Force Quit front-most application
Option-Command-Esc => Force Quit
By the way, know one Windows computer where 3 finger salute takes a minute (or two) before task manager appears. Disconnecting power can be quicker.
Apple Support also has => iPhone and iPod touch: Troubleshooting touchscreen response whose steps include how to reboot device, followed by: "If the steps above don't resolve your issue, please schedule a service appointment with an Apple Retail Store for evaluation." (free Genius Bar appointment is also an option for troubleshooting Mac OS X, especially hardware issues, including ants crawling in Mac at a picnic).
Keep Smiling [:)]

A lot longer then Siri has been in beta, and I imagine when it first came out it had some things Google wanted to tweak.

Actually, there is an app that does something similiar, albeit not quite as intelligent as you might like. Check out SpeakTheWord Bible Search:

Yesterday I wanted to quickly see the imperatives in John. Needing to do something like this rarely I had forgotten how to do it. It would have been so helpful if I could have spoken it like to a Siri function in Logos or at least type it into the go box and have it make the visual filter.
As a result, it took a lot of time to finally figure it out (a big shout-out, thanks to John Fallahee with LearnLogos who even made a personal video of how to do it and quickly sent it to me after I sent him my question).
I guess I'm dreaming but with the complexity & potential of Logos it would be a great aid to maximize the power of Logos to have something like this for us that don't use the many functions often enough to memorize how to do them. [Note: I went to the Logos training videos page; the wiki, etc to look for help before doing a "hail mary" to John].

If you had found it - would the information at https://support.logos.com/hc/en-us/articles/360017524952-Morph-Search Have provided the information you needed?

I know what you mean, a couple of years ago my aged mother (late 80's) ventured to ask Siri about the golf scores.
On being told by Siri that it knew nothing about golf. Mother muttered 'That's no ruddy good'.
Siri responded 'That's not very nice!'
Mother took about three months to pluck up the courage to ask it anything again in case it was cross with her. ;-(

I got one for you 😂 Ask Siri what’s zero divided by zero 0÷0 You’d be surprised at the answer 😂

I thought it is preferred to use an existing relevant post thread rather than a new one. So, this looked relevant so the reason I used it again.

Rarely the case John especially if the original question is a decade out of date. I didn't notice that either BTW.
Generally new questions should get new threads as it only takes a small detail to be different for the thread to go down a side line and become irrelevant to an increasingly disgruntled original poster. Not that that is likely to be true in this case.
In this case having scrolled down the replies and found an answer earlier on one feels it might be acceptable to go off at a tangent.
Best operate the principle 'New Problem - New Thread' and one is likely to get an answer quite swiftly, succinctly, and within top few posts.

There is a tension. If a user is having problems, then creating a new thread is generally best. In your case, a previous post may be a good choice, but the thread was 10 years old and had banter very much out dated. That banter has now been revived, as you found out. A new thread clearly explaining your desires would have been best. Your post was very easily lost in the midst of things.

There are lots of reasonable use cases around spoken input, which is why we started development on Faithlife Assistant. It's currently running in desktop, and will accept spoken input as far as I know. I don't know if the Alexa app (a separate hackathon project from ~6 years ago) is still working or not, but it appears to still be available (no guarantees).
Some challenges:
- Spoken output is fine for short, factual answers, or reading the Bible out loud, but you really need a screen for longer answers or further interaction.
- Once some questions work, people quickly expect most all questions to work, and it's hard for users to know which ones actually will. So you need pretty robust performance to avoid turning people off.
- So far other features and projects have been deemed to have higher impact, so further extensions haven't been prioritized. The project's not dead, and I still believe in its promise, but it's currently dormant.

But it's not working well for me. Some screenshots with typed input:
Note one recognition failure, but "search the bible for knowledge", interpreted as the word knowledge, works pretty well.
Note it returns the highest ranking person who matches that name.

Oh, I forgot about the "FL Assistant". Yes that is the concept I was hoping for, but able to handle the more complicated functions as well. Now it will open a new visual filter document but not create a visual filter for all imperatives in the Gospel of John (as I needed the other day). That would be powerful and such a blessing for occasional users like me.
