Search help (no results)

I'm searching for what Aristotle says about honor. I can find the word in his Rhetoric (left panel below), but Search returns no results (right panel):

This is what I've done so far:

  • Check that Rhetoric is downloaded. (All resources are on this laptop.)
  • Check that Search has both "Match all word forms" and "Match equiv references" checked, with "Match Case" unchecked.
  • Right-click the word honor in Rhetoric and search from there (to ensure it was identical).
  • Reindex my whole library.

The resource is:

LLS:ARISTOTRHENG
2013-08-09T23:02:02Z
ARISTOTRHENG.logos4

Logos 9.11.0.0022, on Windows 11 Pro (64-bit) 21H2 (22000.469), with Logos on D: (a second SSD).

Suggestions?

IIRC match all forms requires either that the resource has morphological coding or that it be in a language for which Logos has a parsing routine - English being the only language I am certain they have. I am certain they don't have a Greek one installed.

Match equivalent references requires a reverse interlinear to tie the two resources together.

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

Thanks, MJ. Tried unchecking both options (individually and together), but it still didn't return any results.

That's strange. There is nothing, in general, about the resource that should stop this search working correctly.

Have you tried searching for other words - such as disgrace - in the same resource?

Yes, I can't even get any matches for the word the.

And the problem extends to anything written by Aristotle, but not other resources:

I suggest enabling diagnostic logging, starting Logos, running the search, closing Logos and uploading logos.log in a reply to this thread

You could try the command reindex LLS:ARISTOTRHENG in the command box, then re-trying the search. As you've already reindexed your whole library, that's unlikely to work, but it may be worth trying.

Thanks, Mark. Didn't know we could reindex a single resource. Will try that too.

    Log file attached.

Apologies for the delay: solid couple of days here. I do appreciate you looking at these when you can.

Thanks for the logs. Unfortunately, there is nothing in there that suggests to me what is going on, hopefully others will be able to see something.

One question - it looks as though you have the Logos data files on a drive D:

What sort of device is that?

    Thanks for checking, Graham.

It's a 17" laptop, with 2 x SSDs inside. Windows is on C:. Data (and Logos) is on D:, which is a Samsung 850 EVO 1TB, a single partition formatted NTFS, 30% free. The Windows DiskManager reports it as healthy.

Just as a point of comparison, I ran the same search with the same resource and got a reasonable number of hits. I only mention that since I tried late last night to run the search on my phone just in case something funny was happening with the resource itself, and in my half-asleep state, didn't get any results. But I can't trust anything I do when I'm in that state.

But here's a wild idea: is it possible to have a passage list called "All Passages" that intercepts Logos' ability to run the search on the entire resource? So when you select "All Passages", you're actually selecting the selected passage list.

Windows is on C:. Data (and Logos) is on D

Is it possible that you actually have two installations and you are opening the one on C?

Good thought, Lew. Checked: I don't have a saved passage guide with that name.

I did notice another difference. Normally the search word (honor) appears as an option to choose in the search window (as circled in the Journal screenshot below), but is NOT an option when I search in the problem resource (Rhetoric).

I'm not sure of the significance of that difference, but I'm wondering if the problem may be with how the interface is calling the search when I press Enter (rather than a problem with Search itself).

Since we're past the more obvious:

    - Did you let Logos form the query (reflecting your latest idea) ... ie right-click an english word, and search this resource?

    - Are you getting the same problem on the Aristotle greeks (Logos sends them to a morph search)?

No results when I right-clicking a word (honor) in Rhetoric (English) and perform a Basic search on the selection.

    - Are you getting the same problem on the Aristotle greeks (Logos sends them to a morph search)?

Yes: No results are returned when I right-click a word in Rhetoric (Greek) and search. I chose γάρ, so Logos created a Morph search for lemma:γάρ with zero results.

This only indicates that the word is not in the index, which is also why the search returns nothing. This all points back to an indexing problem.

It appears that the log file you posted earlier doesn't show any activity from the indexer. Can you run the application with logging again and use the command to reindex that one resource, then post the logs again?

My guess is that the indexer is crashing and preventing the resource from getting indexed.

Thank you, Andrew. Log attached, with reindex of just that one resource.

So the problem is with the index of that resource being blank (since I can't even search for "the"), or possibly with the index named Aristoteles (since the same problem occurs in other Aristotle volumes too).

The Windows 11 Error checking reports, "Your drive was successfully scanned. Windows successfully scanned the drive. No errors were found." (Windows Explorer | right-click D: | Properties | Tools | Check)

    The indexer is not called.

I suggest you force LLS:ARISTOTRHENG to re-download by right-clicking in Library, selecting Remove from this device then restart Logos and select Download.  With logging enabled, reindex it and reindex another resource that is searchable. Then upload the logs.

    SOLVED. Thank you, Dave.

Removed the volume from the local device (PC).
    Restarted Logos.
    Downloaded it.
The indexer fired up by itself.
And now the search works (71 results in 3 articles).

    Appreciated.
