How do i "downgrade" from L9 back to L8?

Hi, I have a windows 7 pc, I updated to window 10 pro and promptly downloaded L9. I was so excited to see the new stuff. Well, windows 10 is horrible in my opinion and was extremely slow. Now, before everyone tells me to upgrade, or buy new, let me just say that I am on a limited income and the pc that I have my daughter bought for me used, I have no money for new. That being said, my L8 worked fine and I followed the wiki on backing up before reverting.(that took forever) Anyway, so I reverted back to win7 and thought it would be simple to also revert back to L8 only now this is my problem:

1. I get the sign in and I add my user name & password.

2. it says signing in, then can't sign in check proxy or some such, try again.

3. I click try again and this is the continual loop. I can not even work offline as it won't open.

The things I've tried: I have checked the BITS, I've downloaded the security updates, I've tried holding the ctl on sign on, I've screamed, cried, and begged the silly thing to just work. Can anyone please help me?

(Wordsearch was my original software though I did have logos 2-4)

I don't know if it is possible to go back to L8 or not.  Were you using installers for L9 or L8?

Hi Mr. Quick, thank you for responding. I made the original back following directions https://wiki.logos.com/quick_installation_onto_multiple_computers BEFORE I installed win 10.

Ok, so first I tried the L8 download from the wiki but it keeps saying can't download required file. Then I used the msi file from my backups and it has brought me to current problems of not signing in.

I have uninstalled completely thinking I missed a step or something but nothing is working. I am fearful that because I signed in on the L9 and it "linked' or whatever to my account now it only wants that version. So, that is why I am here, hoping to fix it.

Even if you manage to install L8, it will automatically update to L9 if it's supported on the device, and you own the license.

The only solution I can think of is calling customer support and to ask them to remove L9 engine access from your account (if they're able to do that).

Hi Mr. Krohn, thank you also for responding. I did as you suggested and sent a request via contact support. I will update here if they help me. If anyone can think of anything else in the meantime, I would so appreciate it. Thanks again.

You can turn off the automatic update in the program settings but I would suggest going through tech services as L8 vs. L9 really doesn't account for it being unusably slow. There is likely something about how it installed that is making it slow.

Hi MJ.Smith, sorry to be informal but I'm not sure if your a Mr. or Mrs. Anyway, thank you for responding but I'm so sorry, I don't understand your post, I cannot open Logos to access the settings. Is there a way to change that without signing in first? If so would you be so kind as to tell me how? Thanks again.

(my issue:The sign in screen opens, I add my credentials, it spins says signing in, something about library (goes to fast for these old eyes) and then can't sign in with try again in blue.)

I was just pointing out that Faithlife doesn't have to pull your license - that you have control over the update. But I think you should call tech services because what you describe indicates an error in the installation.

Another thought? Can you roll your computer back to a point in which Logos 8 worked?

but I would suggest going through tech services

The potential problem with this is that Windows 7 is no longer supported by Faithlife so customer services may not be able to help.

You said above that you did a reinstallation, so this is effectively a first-time login on this computer.

This requires authentication with Faithlife servers - it is possible that this no longer works with Windows 7 but I don't know if this is the case or not.

For MJ. Smith, I did the revert pc back to win 7 and following a ton of issues and web talk it was decided to do a clean install of win7 via my dell recovery usb. I then followed the instruction on the wiki to restore the back up of my Logos 8 that I had made prior to updating window to 10. But even though the backup should have my login information, it just continues to loop.

Thank you Mr. Criddle for also responding. I thought by the instructions on the wiki that backing up would keep my login and documents. that is why i went through the trouble of doing it. I followed it to the letter, marking off as i went along. I thought the whole reason for the back up steps was to ensure a backup of my login, documents and resources that are on my account. I mean that is the definition of backup, or so I thought. I'm learning that I tend to think differently than others.

One other thing to anyone that it matters, my initial Logos was 4, then i switched to WordSearch final version 10 with v11 starter edition. Then Logos took WS and updated my Logos4 to the Logos 8 but my folders and such still have the "4". Not sure if all this makes sense or even if it makes any difference. Regardless, thank you everyone for trying to help me.

    God Bless You All!

Yes - but with the change to require an initial login on first time use that might be having an impact here. As I say, I don't know if that is happening

Then Logos took WS and updated my Logos4 to the Logos 8 but my folders and such still have the "4". Not sure if all this makes sense or even if it makes any difference

That is totally normal (it relates to a Logos naming decision some versions back) and won't affect anything.

Hi everyone, Praise the Lord! I've not gotten any messages, but I thought I would try one last time to see if it would work before I go to bed and at this moment it is "preparing your library" i'v not gotten this far before so I think (sending prayer to the Lord) it might be working. I'll wait just a sec...

Yes! it's asking to start downloading AND my home page is up! Not sure why or what but I will thank the Lord!

Thank you for your suggestions and taking your time, I truly appreciate it! God Bless You!

  • Command set update channel to manual allows automatic updating of resources while effectively disabling program updating. Update channel manual does not exist so automatic program updating cannot find anything.

If the original backup was when you had Logos 8 on Windows 7 you should be fine. But did you follow the steps in Method 1 of the wiki when you ran the msi file?

EDIT: I just saw your "praise" post, so ignore the above.

But isn’t this a temporary solution since L8 is unsupported anyway? https://community.logos.com/forums/t/199825.aspx

How long can unsupported software run on a computer?

As long as the computer lives!  Libby is almost ready for high school graduation.  She'll being going to college soon.

And El-7 is in kindergarten.  Smooth as silk.

From a statistical sample of one, the key is the computer; the software is pretty battle-tested (probably all the forum target practice).

    • Online: not very long if it is allowed to upgrade! You have to Set Update Channel to Manual
    • Online: until Faithlife remove vital services from an unsupported operating system  e.g. Sync, Login or until you realise you are not getting the resource updates you need (new or otherwise) or until you
    • Offline: until you get fed up with the restrictions!
