4.0b SR-1 (v4.02.3.7704) is now shipping Notes performance

Notice that SR-1 includes an improvement to performance when dealing with large notes files. Is Logos development also dealing with performance issues arising from lots of small notes files?

With 4.0b and my notes imported, now it takes much longer to open resources such as bibles and commentaries - I guess it's because it is searching for notes (and I only have 20 or 30, not hundreds!!!)

Or is there some other problem with 4.0b performance?

I tried adding 30 notes to a single commentary and I am not experiencing the large delay that you mention - I even tried closing and re-opening L4 and then going to the passage guide and opening that commentary with 30 notes in it. Maybe you could reproduce this delay (however small or large it is) and post the logs during this session for us to review?

Edit: Just to clarify I tried doing this with the JFB - what resource(s) were you using when you noticed this?

Having just counted them, I actually have 41 notes (!) each of which is from one to three screenfuls in length. They are attached not a specific resource but to bible references, ranging from a whole book to an individual verse (most to a chapter or paragraph).

My testing is using a standard PG (so I have open NIV-Anglicised, ESV, TNIV, NKJV & LGNTI bibles, and NBC).

How do I create logs for you? and/or where are the logs stored?

I have just retested - switching varies from 2 seconds to more than 10. Also testing now (with SR-1) I do occasionally get the Logos 4 Not Responding message!

In John 3:16, my Parallel resources list 24 resources. Switching bibles is equally slow (unless the bible version is already open in another tab).

Don't now if this will help, but I tried it and it improved my performance a bit. "Set Custom Chrome to No" command. Found it in another post.

So here we are.

I opened Logos, ran PG for Jn3.16, then in the commentary tab pressed right-arrow a bunch of times (maybe 4 or 5?) and left-arrow the same number of times. Response was consistently slow. Logs attached. Many thanks for looking into this.

Not fully checked out with a stop watch - but I have recently switched my Page File to drive D as a permanent fixed size - with Logos running on drive C - right/left-arrow performance seems to be more responsive. (Still a bit slow but 2-5 seconds rather than 10.)

Jonathan you are not alone in this puzzling slow performance. I have all the latest downloads for L4, have unchecked all my notes and still get the same slow loading of L4 (40 secs) and slow opening of another resource. (10secs for an additional commentary). I have 6B Ram, 7200 RPM HD, core 2 duo CPU and 500GB HD. All other programs run lightening fast, even L3. Thus, I suspect that L4 requires fine tuning to resolve this problem. I'm no savvy enough regarding the coding challenges that the Logos tech team faces, but hope they find a solution in the near future. The slow performance detracts from study when having to wait as long for a book to open as it would take to get a hard copy and open it. I love L4, but hope it speeds up. It is also a distraction to not have my notes readily available. Disabling their opening only sped up loading by a few seconds.

Francis, is the reference to Chrome to your Google Chrome browser? I couldn't find any reference in the L4 help pages to Custom Chrome. If I missed something, please let me know. I would like to use any means of speeding up my L4.

Have you set your pagefile manually yet? I updated the Logos Wiki (http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_Running_Slowly) with instructions, but this was the single largest enhancement to my system. L4 has gone from unbearable to quite reasonable. It's stil not as fast as I would like, but it is tolerable at this point given Bob's stragety for future planning.

Yes I have a large manually set page file running on disk D ... but performance is still slow once more than one window is open (with Bibles and Commentaries in particular). Still often get (Logos 4 not responding) when switching passages or opening new window.

L4 was fast for me until I imported all my old notes, then it slowed to a crawl. If I open a workspace that has no note-linking (eg. Christian History & Biography Magazine and a Bible Dictionary) then L4 opens fast. Some of my workspaces that have 7-8 windows with note links can take more than 2-3 minutes to open up. I know that Logos is aware of this and I will be excited when this is fixed.

I have come to the conclusion that pretty much any user generated data slows down the system. The more user data, the slower it runs. (Doesn't matter if it is imported or not, importing just increases volume faster...)

On an educated guess, it's because user data is being stored in multiple databases instead of just one, the database structures have been designed to make it easier to import L3 data rather than for speed and scalability, and the queries using the database have not been optimized. Basically what you would expect if the priority to to get features out first, then optimize... Programmers will take a first cut that works, but later you have a database engineer come through and work with the programmers to optimize performance...

I have a really hard time believing that. I do programming for a living, though mostly web programming. Disk access times, memory usage, etc. should be negligible for the minimal amount of data represented by user notes. It's not like we have a bunch of large images, videos, or the like in our notes. I remember my mom writing a book, and it was about half a meg of data total. Even with verbose formats like XML, the data involved really should be so little that your computer does no more than give it a tired smile, not that it breaks into any kind of sweat.

The problem is its not just user notes, but all user data combined... Notes actually aren't too bad on performance in the latest build, but its the combinations of everything that is bogging things down for some of us... And faulty queries and/or indexes can ruin performance when a database is involved. I am a DBA and see this all the time...

I have a limited dataset and admit I might be flawed in my theory, but it seems to fit with the experiences of others here... Ah well... I imagine all will be improved by 4th Q of this year after all features added and working...

Nor do I believe that multiple databases would slow the system in the current data design. Obviously, I haven't seen the access SQL to see if it is well-formed. And I do agree that as user data is added, performance seems to go down.

I probably wasn't too clear here, but I think the Notes DB itself is ok at this point. Take a look at the Highlinging DB with the SQLite browser and thats another matter.

I don't believe the multiple DBs should be that much of a issue on newer systems, but it does add a bit of overhead that might push older/slower systems over the edge. It is definately the least of the worries tho...

The only things left to look at are the queries and programming logic, which we can only guess at...
