Finding all sins in Old Testament where God mandated death.

Please don’t misunderstand me here. The question is not asked with any partisan intent over the modern debate on the death penalty.

What I’m working on is a project as on why God mandated these punishments for things that seem minor to modern sensibilities and sometimes shock the world.

But, it seems like I need to track them all down to make sure there are no sins on the list that would disprove my theory right out of the gate.

Any suggestions on how to search?

    A Bible Search for death in the Pentateuch is a good start.You can refine it with death WITHIN {Speaker <Person God>}

    The speaker may also be Moses  --> death WITHIN {Speaker <Person God>}, {Speaker <Person Moses>}

    {Section <Culture Capital Punishment>} introduces equivalent expressions e.g. "shall not live", "may die". Again, you can restrict that by Speaker.

    Dave....  between you and Graham.... and your understanding of the Logos Search.... I think you should put out a video on it. I appreciate the depth you two seem to understand it.

    xn = Christan man=man -- Acts 11:26 "....and the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch".

    Barney Fife is my hero! He only uses an abacus with 14 rows!

    Thank you.

    The simple Search brings out examples that you can refine or expand. I right-click one result for death and discover "Capital Punishment". There are others like "Regulations about personal offenses". Then there is "Law, Casuistic". Select that and then select a Search on the other side of the Context menu. You get additional results like "life for life".

    Another option, in addition to what Dave suggested, is to use Sense searching - <Sense to kill> WITHIN {Speaker <Person God>}

    You will get some results that aren't relevant to your search but it could be another useful approach.

    Thank you all. Filtering through the results have given me things to consider.

    I guess I really need to dig out the manual and videos and learn how to search for myself [:)].

    Totally agree. I would also add Keep Smiling 4 Jesus :) -- another total stud.

    I finally got around to watching several videos purchased from LearnLogos. I didn't realize the importance of Right-click menu that Dave mentions. You don't need to know the search syntax as much if you start there. Try on multiple searches suggested using the right-click menu. Then combine the searches that Logos populates using AND, OR etc. Search has become less intimidating for me.

    Interesting. I’ll have to file this search away for looking into later.

    Yes - this is such an important technique

    Or…you could use this advanced search training: https://www.logos.com/product/51655/verbum-advanced-search-training

    I’m still of the opinion that the search feature could or needs to be simplified.

    David, also of possible interest is the list "Forty-Two Death Penalty Sins" in Dake's Topics.

    This is a great subject for a project, David.

    One pair of words that is very helpful to your search in a variety of translations, perhaps especially in the New Living Translation, is "must die." Not every hit will be relevant, of course, but you'll find many useful passages.

    Blessings to your study.

    It also has the advantage of teaching the user what code to type since it appears in the search field. It's easy to just look at the search results, but taking a look at the search criteria will reveal much.
