Hi I love my logos and use features the web-app doesn't have (personal books).

I currently have linux installed on my computer (Zorin OS 16).  It's become so user friendly anyone can have linux now.

I am not a programmer, just a Mom who loves her Bible and studying with Logos.

Is there anyway I could install Logos to my Zorin OS?

Thanks
Machelle

You will need a Windows Virtual Machine (VM) for Linux  - software that can emulate Windows and thus run Logos. You will need a Windows licence, though as you have to install it in the VM. I think you need the Pro version for this and make sure it is 64-bit.

This probably would be the "proper way" to run Logos, but it seems to challenge the idea of using a Linux OS in the firstplace. An alternative that seems to work for some Linux users is to run Logos on native Linux by using the Windows emulator Wine. There's a looooong thread about that and it's probably advisable to read it from the newest post backwards - somewhere should be a link to one or more install scripts and much helpful advise (note: I know nothing about Zorin OS and whether it will run one of the Wine versions that support Logos). I'm sure John and his fellows are ready to help, too.

Yes, I glanced at the thread and thought, no way, I'm technical, but that looks like a nightmare.  I hope Logos does it for us.  Please make it compatible with linux?  Preferable ZORIN OS because it is so easy to install parallel to windows install.

They won't. There isn't a market for it. The web app is your best bet.

If we get a cyber attack, and microsoft is attacked (like maybe a Russian cyber attack?), then linux would be a great backup.  And the market might flip.  oh well, we shall see!

JT was somewhat short in his reply. The longer answer is Bob Pritchett a few years back said that their research was something like Linux has 1% of the desktop market. In order for Logos on Linux to be a viable project, the user base would need to be at least as large as MacOS and Linux isn't anywhere close to that. I love Linux myself and have learned quite a bit having to navigate all of the issues to make the desktop work. The person who likes doing that stuff can work within Linux, but most of the folks out there that use a computer want it to just work. I wish Linux was at that point for the majority of users, but it isn't. So, because there isn't a large enough user base, Faithlife must continue to support the platforms it has committed to.

The work that John Goodman and others of the Faithlife community have done with getting Logos to run under Wine is just incredible. I can remember a couple of years ago when some of the breakthroughs were made and things started to roll. Your best bet is to attempt to install the appimage of Logos in your Linux installation by following these instructions: https://github.com/ferion11/LogosLInuxInstaller. Then, if you have issues, post to the larger Linux thread and John and others can help you.

You realize that attacks on open-source code requires no hacking skills? Given the Linux use as web/network servers, it would be child's play to bring them down.

There may be other reasons that microsoft goes down.  I'm just saying having your software working on a back system might be a good idea.  But what do I know ?  I'm just a housewife who Bible studies all day. lol

Distrowatch shows Zorin OS is a variant of Ubuntu, which includes WINE (for running many Windows programs).

Distrowatch Major Distributions include Linux Mint, which is an alternative to Zorin OS (similar focus on beginner use, with Irish origins). Over the past six months, Linux Mint is #3 for page hits while Zorin OS is # 10.

Without electricity, all computers become useless. Excellent back system can be used offline (stand alone) along with having its own electrical power source.

Oh I'm smiling!  God is in total control!  As a Mama I'm naturally looking to what could go wrong and how could I prepare for such events.  We are living in uncharted waters for sure.  I'm out there making home-made fresh milled flour bread, studying my Bible like crazy, and praying constantly.

I dabble in computer stuff, and I might be able to do this wine thing If I can wrap my head around what I actually have to do to get it going, but I'm really just thinking that things "could" go south for corrupt corporations like microsoft because of the activities of Gates and his endeavors with the WEF.  It's all murky right now, will we need to go to Linux because of this?  I don't know.  Will there be a cyber attack? I don't know.  Will we lose the internet altogether or electricity?  I don't know.
But one thing I do know, is, that if one or more of those things happen, I will be as prepared as I can be both spiritually and physically.

I will try to look into this Wine thing, but I think the other thread said there will be a logos update coming that might complicate things. sigh.  Maybe I'll just use the app, it's ok.

Any facts you may have are unrelated to Faithlife products or uses ... hence, it doesn't belong here. And unless you know Bill Gates as a close friend, I'll take my information sources over yours any time.

That's fair.  It wasn't my point anyway.
