How to download Logos

I find myself in this delightful situation where I have to download Logos again and with a massive download speed of 1.6 Mbps and a 32 Gig File to download, Logos 9 will be called Logos 20 by the time it finishes up. I've done a download which I think is called 'Quick Install' but in a few weeks, we will have Fiber Opts, which should eliminate download griefs.

My question is: at that time, do I just do a regular download of the whole Logos and if so, does it re-download what I already have or does it bypass those programs which I already have.

OR - is there another way to download and if so, where do I go to do that?

If you have access to another installation, you can copy the resource files onto another drive and eliminate a massive portion of the download. If that isn't an option, you might want to use the web app until your faster internet arrives. At that point, you can simply download the engine and let it re-download all of your resources and notes, etc.

EDIT: I think I misunderstood part of your question. It sounds like you have chosen to do a "skinny" download (only download a portion of your library). When the faster internet comes, you will need to manually download the rest of your documents. You will mass select your cloud resources and download them. You will also want to check your settings at that point, else new resources won't download.

Here's what's up. This laptop is presently on parole, for it's bluescreened half a dozen times. I've reset it once and it bluescreen again. I was ready to give up on it but just to be sure it's not toast, I reset it again. For the last several days, it's working ok which might mean nothing. We'll see in a few days if it stays ok. It will have its 10th birthday next year, so in computer years, it might be at the end of the road.

I had the C: drive partitioned and though C: drive was wiped apart from Files and pictures, the F: drive still holds 32 plus Gigs of Logos date. But when I clicked on Logos from the Start button, it came up giving me the options to do the Quick Install or the whole thing. The present download speed is why I chose the Quick Install.

So most of the resources are still on the F: drive and though the Quick Install seems to have installed again on the F: drive, it's still not loading everything up.

Quick question. Does everyone have Logos stored in the Cloud or is that an option?

It depends upon what you mean by "Logos."

Everyone's purchases are kept in the cloud, so users don't need to make backups to prevent loss of resources.

As far as notes, highlighting, preferences, etc., these by default are also "in the cloud." Users can choose to not use internet, in which case these preferences will not be synced and "in the cloud." Using default settings, there is no need to make a manual backup... and users can simply download the engine and allow the rest to download and index.

There is one exception: Personal Books.

1. Users can choose to upload compiled personal books. If a user does so, then the compiled book will be "in the cloud" and available on all DESKTOP (not mobile) installations. If a user does not manually upload the compiled book, only the metadata (title, author, etc.) will be "in the cloud," not the actual book itself.

2. The sync of personal books applies to the compiled book only. It does not apply to the source material (.docx) files. A user DOES need to back that up if he or she wants future access (i.e. to make revisions, etc.). I store my .docx files in Dropbox, so they are backed up and "in the cloud" when I need them.

Thank you for the detailed and 'over my head' reply. To make it simple for me, do I put the following in in the Command Prompt in Logos "enter scan <path to backup resources> in the Logos Command box" - which in my case would be "scan f:\Logos" or is there a particular File I should put instead of just Logos? And if so, will that give me everything I have in Logos at my fingertips again?

Of course, I can make this more simple by using what I've presently downloaded in the Quick Scan and wait till we get Fiber Opts and at that point, it won't take but a few minutes to just download the whole of Logos.

I think this much is simple enough for me, in that I can click on the three dots in the upper right hand of Logos and click on 'Download Logos' which as far as I know, will download the whole program. But as mentioned earlier, I'll do that when Fiber Opts is finally installed.

It would be nice though, if I could get the whole program up now by linking into the (I'll call it Files) on my F: drive. But it's not an absolute necessity.

Don't forget that if you Scan or otherwise import from existing hardware you stand the risk of re-importing elements in the files that you may not want.

Given the availability of imminent fibre speeds for the download and usually seven sleep cycles a week which provides a chunk of time for downloads and indexing; I would recommend doing a complete reinstall of programme and resources.

Of course a 10 year old laptop may take quite some time to index.

Thanks for the warning. I take it that you're referring to a new laptop if it comes down to that. Presently, as you know, I scanned from the partitioned drive that wasn't wiped in the Reset.

The lines have already been installed through here for the Fiber Opts but I'm informed it could be well into the summer before they turn it on. I have Logos on an even older Toshiba Laptop, so if this one bluescreens again, I can get by with that till I get a new machine. I've had this asus for over 9 years and never have seen the thrilling blue screen till now. As you know, a new 17.3 inch asus rog represents a lot of MacDonalds coffee but I'll get one spite if this one does go pads up. Anyway, that's the long way around saying I agree with you - a complete reinstall when Bell does turn on the Fiber.

When I scanned the 32 Gig Folder from the F: Drive yesterday evening, I'm thinking it took between 5-10 minutes (no longer) to index.

Can you, when you get a moment, elaborate on the elements in the files that I might not want?

Setting aside the possibility that the nefarious may have attacked the hard drive at some point or the other during its ten year life; when Logos resources are updated the file is overwritten. The efficiency with which this is completed may be perfect but it may not leaving the odd byte unchanged.

A fresh download of the library, especially onto a new hard drive, ensures that the best current file is stored.

At least that is my (not so) humble opinion.

When I did the Quick Install, I inadvertently installed it on the C: drive. I notice there is a Folder now that is called Logos4 in which there is 29 plus Gigs. The original Folder on the F: Drive holds 32 Gigs.

In my curiosity, I looked at the option of uninstalling it. Strangely enough, the Uninstall in Control Panel does not show Logos nor does Revo Uninstaller. If I were to actually uninstall Logos, how would I go about that since I cannot find it in either of the Uninstall programs?

As I understand it...

Logos assumes installation on the C drive and is designed to work there. It, and its resource files, can be forced into other homes but that a hybrid installation. Presumably when you did your mini installation Logos simply reverted to type.

Although the file is named Logos 4 it is in fact the latest version. A programming failure to anticipate has left the installation with this hereditary name. Changing it would not improve the program and would require considerable work.

I would think that you could simply delete the files from the F: drive now with no ill effects.

If installing to a new laptop, follow Method 2 as that will give you Logos without indexing and no downloading (except for a few resources that may be out of date).

What you suggest would work but take much longer.

What Mike said is basically correct. Prior to installing on F: drive you had an old installation on C: drive using Logos4 as the base folder. The App has a habit of leaving that folder behind when uninstalling, so your inadvertent quick-install reused that folder. The newer Logos4 installation is smaller than the Logos installation on F: because it does not have any downloaded media/video files or data from the Concordance tool. Also, new resource Indexes tend to be smaller.

Open the Windows Search menu (bottom left on Taskbar) and type Regedit

select Registry Editor
select HKEY_CURRENT_USER
select Software followed by Logos4
What is the InstallDirectory?
What is the InstalledVersion? Does it match your version of Logos?
select Installer (below Logos4). Do you see one version against all the entries? Is it the same as InstalledVersion?

See screenshot in my previous post and double-check that InstallDirectory does not exist as well as the Installer sub-folder below Logos4.

If that is the case, you should be able to use Method 2 to install Logos:

check that the \Resources folder on C: and F: actually have resources (see the wiki for its location)
if you want to have the installation on F:, use the folders on C:\Logos4 as the backup and delete F:\Logos
follow the steps for Method 2 (remember to use a Custom install to F:\)
check Logos is working and then you can delete the C:\Logos4 folder.

If you want the installation on C: drive, use F:\Logos as your backup and delete the C:\Logos4 folder before installing.

I changed the name to xxLogos4 and it wouldn't work. It asked if I wanted to begin downloading.

I've since tried to rename it back and it said Logos4 was already there, so I removed the xxLogos4.

When I go now to start Logos, I get the same message, asking if I want to begin downloading.

If you are satisfied that F:\logos has your resources, then delete the Logos4 folder in %localappdata% and do a standard install of Logos (quick/minimum) and do the scan from F:/logos. If everything is working you can then delete F:/logos.

I was pasting it in File Explorer but in the Search Local instead of the open bar to the left of it. Now doing the latter, it brings up the Logos4 amongst other things.

I notice the Folder holds 8.74 Gigs instead of the twenty something previously. Anyway, when Logos downloads the Quick Install, I'll do the scan from the F: drive and I'll let you know how it goes.

Sorry for the confusion. The Logos4 Folder previous to renaming it and then remarkably deleting it, was 26.1 Gigs I believe. After the Logos4 Folder was considerably smaller.

After doing the Quick Install, there is no longer a Logos4 Folder on the C:drive. I've just hit the scan f:\Logos and it's Indexing so unless it creates a new Folder on the C: drive which would be even more weird, it's totally disappeared.

I have no idea why this Folder wasn't showing where it was before (I think it was under Documents) so I assumed it was gone. Obviously, I should have checked under Users. Maybe you've got an explanation.

Logos4 on C: drive is 25.8Gigs whereas Logos on the F: drive is 31.9 Gigs on Disk. No version is given in the Registry.

That wasn't what I was asking, so I think we should discontinue the conversation at this point.

Here's my summary:

Logos4 on C:\ does not have all the sub-folders for an installation and Logos.exe is missing.
F:\Logos has all the sub-folders of a custom installation, and its Logos.exe appears to be the current version (9.12.0.17), which you can confirm by hovering over it.
The Registry is incomplete and you probably can't uninstall Logos.
If Logos is working OK there is no need to worry about these details!

As you system appears to be failing, you should take precautions:

Backup the F:\Logos folder to a removable drive
Backup other data that is important to you.

When reinstalling Logos on a new computer, use Method 2 with the backup of F:/Logos.

Very good Dave. I've used computers for years but regarding the mechanics, as you can see, I'll quickly take the back seat.

I do have everything backed up including of course, the Logos Folder.
