Is there any way for a user to create and save a Search Template?
No - I do remember it being discussed as an option some time ago but it is not (currently at least) possible.
A few minutes ago, I was thinking how nice it would be to have an auto-fill-in template for:
largetext:XXXXX OR heading:XXXXX
I could make such a search and drag a shortcut to it at the top of Logos. Then replace the search terms in the template. But surely there could be a quick, simple template to perform this most common and essential search and ones like it.
Maybe we could have a combo-box kind of dropdown with prescribed and customized templates.
([field heading,largetext] XXXXX)
is equivalent search syntax, which finds the same set of results, but has the same color for all results (and does not double count XXXXXX twice for heading & largetext)

Create and run a Search using exactly that. Then drag the Search tab into a folder in Favorites and rename it.
That is your template (click to use it).
Thank to everyone in this thread. Nice addition to my Favorites Folder.

Or drag that Search tab to the Shortcut bar for one-click access.
Another question: Is there a way to keep the Search Templates (left-hand side-bar) open whenever I open the Search tool?
Probably not. But why don't you keep a Search tab (or two) in your layout?
