Reinstalling W/S on a new SSD drive

I was having some operating system issues and decided to reset my Win10 OS. In the process I also switched to a new SSD drive. I have installed W/S 10 but have no access to the book libraries I was using on the old drive. Is there any way to retrieve the book libraries from the old hard drive? I can still read the data on the old drive, that's no problem, but where are the library repositories located on the drive and can they be retrieved/reinstalled on my new drive?

So, I have located the book repositories and have reinstalled/indexed, and whatever W/S wants to do with the files, but the program wants to be "registered" and I suppose, that may be a problem since there is no longer any access to the online W/S user database. It's no doubt just a setting in the windows registry -- changing a 0 to a 1 someplace. Can anyone help me with this?

I looked at my files, and it may be this. I had one Windows profile with WORDsearch logged in, and one without. The ActiveUserID was blank on the one not logged in.

C:\Users\[USER]\AppData\Local\Wordsearch 12\Wordsearch 12.ini

ActiveUserID= Needs 5 digit number

It looks like the data associated with the ActiveUserID is stored in

C:\ProgramData\WORDsearch\Global Data\LocalLogins.db3

Reinstalling Wordsearch to another PC.

If anyone needs help reinstalling Wordsearch on another PC...I fumbled my way through it but have figured out a way to do it. Doing this there's no need to log in with the software as it's no longer supported so maybe this will help.

I have Wordsearch on my laptop and have switched to another laptop. I have Logos installed on the new laptop but Logos feels so clunky to me. So, I had the Wordsearch install file in my download folder. I installed it but then the challenge became it couldn't register Wordsearch as it is no longer supported. But neither were my books installed. So I did a little reading online and came across something that got me to think about where the library of books are installed within the Wordsearch folders. There's a few Wordsearch folders in different locations on the "C" drive. I finally found the library folder and copied the content of that folder from my original pc to the destination pc. The library is installed in a a hidden folder.

Go to the "C" drive and click the view tab at the top to make all hidden folders viewable. There will be a folder called "Program Data." In the program data folder there is a Wordsearch folder. In this folder there's two folders you'll need to copy the contents of and paste them into the destinations pc. I had to copy contents of the folders called "Global Data" and "Library." Once inside each of these folders I copied all the files within those folders to the same folders in the destination pc.

Once I did that I could see the books in my library but didn't have the permissions needed to see and use these books. In Wordsearch there's a tab called "Tools" and that brings up a window that says "Manage Library" and "My Library List." At first, I only copied the contents in the "Library" folder and my books were there but they were still locked and I couldn't use them. So, I thought well, what it I copy the contents of the "Global Data" folder and see what happens. Then I restated my Wordsearch program after that and voila....my books were all there and I could open them.

Hope this doesn't sound too complicated but I'll try to give a description of what I did. I hope it will work for you as it did for me.

The location of the Program Data folder is C: > Program Data > Wordsearch > then you'll find the Global Data and Library folders. Once inside the folder you can click on one of them and hit the <ctrl> key and the the letter "A" key at the same time and it will highlight all the files. Right click to copy those files onto a thumb drive or and external drive to paste them into the same folder destination on the new pc.

This may sound confusing as I'm trying to type fast and finish my lunch break at work. Hope this a help.

Out of the box = No because Apple's operating system is an open source BSD variant (Darwin), which does not have a C: drive.

Options on macOS are:

Running a Windows virtual machine: e.g. Parallels, Virtual Box, VMware
Configuring WINE on macOS
Using remote desktop on macOS to use Wordsearch on a Windows computer

In addition to the advise above, if you are purchasing a Laptop with an M1 chip, which is highly recommended so your Mac is not obsolete out of the box, then I know of no way to install WS on the Mac unless you can find an emulator that works with a non-intel chip.

Keep smiling, I think, has answered your question.

Installing logos via an emulator is illogical. Emulators are notoriously processor and memory hogs and will eat up resources. Wordsearch really has no future and even if you go to all the trouble of getting it to work you will find yourself back to square one relatively soon.

In my opinion, unless you are a person of absolute leisure and little purpose, your time would be better spent getting to grips with Logos. That course of action would likely be easier on your pocket as well.

Intego.com has a website that mentions how to roll a Windows 11 VM on an Apple Silicon Mac if you need to, but since it’s not officially supported, and performance in VMs isn’t great, I recommend against it.

I also tried Wordsearch 12 on WINE/CrossOver once, and with the exception of the official Mac version that Lifeway put out (which no longer runs on modern Macs), it was a total mess.

My recommendation would be to move onto Logos if possible. I’ve been told Logos runs great on Apple Silicon using Rosetta, and eventually I’m sure Logos will port to being a native Apple Silicon app when development resources seem feasible to do so, and it’s going to be better supported on modern Macs long-term. Once I went back to a Mac as my daily driver, I tried Wordsearch on a Windows VM, but ended up tossing it and just running Logos (plus other supported Bible software apps). I’ve decided it’s time to let legacy go and move forward.

I copied the Program Files and ProgramData folders in their entirety (with Global Data) and still I just get red ? by each book. The WS Read.me doc that addresses this says nothing about how to use the reinstall key. And when I did a backup from the other computer and tried to restore, it said there was no backup file.

Anyone got any other ideas? Thanks.

The red ? means the book files are missing from the library folder. The files can no longer be downloaded from the Wordsearch servers.

On your old PC, the book files were usually in C:\ProgramData\Library

So you copied the contents of Global Data twice? After my setup, there is a Global Data older under ProgramData but there is no Library folder. That is under Program Files.

Mine was in Program Data, but the location could be changed, so it might have been somewhere else on your PC.

I know your post is pretty old, but wondering if you have an additional ideas related to the need to register after a new install?

I have been able to reinstall Wordsearch 12 on a new laptop and used a backup from the older laptop that has a functioning Wordsearch. I have compared the Wordsearch12.ini, line by line and matched the characters from the older ini to the new one including matching the ActiveUserID.

However, my challenge is that when I open Wordsearch it is still requiring me to register, which we all know is not possible. "(30 days remaining to register) Sign in". Any idea where I need to go to change the data related to registration???

WS can be installed on a new computer if you have a working install on another computer. You will need a WS set-up file and the data folder from the existing WS install.

found in. C:\ProgramData\WORDsearch ... (Windows File Explorer)

This is the folder where all of your book data is stored.

After running the WS setup file, just delete that folder in the fresh install and copy that folder from the already working install in there. I don't think this is necessary, but I also copied the WORDsearch folder in the program files directory form the old install as well after deleting it out.

Everything works fine except for one feature.

All of my books show up in the Library view and can be opened from there. When you go to the study view, the unlock feature in the upper left corner doesn't work, so books cannot be opened from the study view. But they all can be opened, like I said from the Library view.

My fresh install on my new laptop, 2/18/22, using this method is working perfectly.

WORDsearch: New Computer Installation Guide

Install WORDsearch (12) for the first time on a new machine.

On your old machine:

Open File Explorer and copy all these directories to a thumb drive.

Find where you installed WORDsearch, the default directory is:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Wordsearch 12\

Also copy the information in these directories to your thumb drive:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Wordsearch 12\

C:\Users\username\OneDrive\Documents\WORDsearch\

NOTE: be sure to name the directories by the right name so you can copy them to the right “new” directory.

On your old machine:

Start WORDsearch and go to: WORDsearch Options\Backup

Save your Backup to the thumb drive.

On your new computer:

Copy/paste all of the above directories to the same directories on your new computer.

NOTE: (do this last)

On your new machine:

Start WORDsearch and go to:

WORDsearch Options\Restore (select the Backup directory on the thumb drive).

Last: Go to WORDsearch Desktops and select the desktop of your choice.

Everything should work like it did on your old machine.

Thank you for posting how you got WordSearch functioning on another computer. I followed your instructions AFTER having only first copied the Library folder to my other computer. When I copied the Global Data folder, things started up with critical locked books UNLOCKED! I was particularly interested in my interlinear bibles.
