BUG: 4.0cB5: CBV with Footnotes to WordPad does not get footnotes

(sorry - Beta 6 is downloading and will still be a few hours ... report is on Beta 5)

If I use "Copy Bible Verse", with style "with Footnotes" to Windows WordPad, I don't actually get the footnotes.

I do get the suberscript markers within the verse, but WordPad does not render the RTF as supplied. (Word does - and has the full footnotes and citation.)

The upper-left is the raw contents of the Windows Clipboard, and showing the RTF which is the format I assume WordPad is using.

Yes, but as WordPad is the target selected within CBV, and the style is "with Footnotes", I would expect the RTF to be rendered in some format that will carry the contents even if the formatting is less than ideal.

(Same for the Notepad version of this report)

Our expectations are different - I would not expect the footnotes to follow into software that doesn't support them. I would have reported it as a bug/unanticipated feature if it had.[:D]

Well, MJ, I see it different to you then.

For the UI below, anything less than FOOTNOTES is an error in my view.

I'd rather see what Logos thinks than you and I disagree on wording.

Yes, I agree that we see it differently; I think it is also important for Logos to know that there are differing expectations among their users. My expectations are based upon switching my 97-year-old father from Word to WordPad specifically to eliminate features that had become confusing.

In this example, I would say the answer is for you to select one of the other predefined formats in CBV, that does not attempt to render the footnotes - just the core verse content.

I believe, if someone asks for the footnotes too, they should render, even if the format is poor.

There are many programs people will be using that will use the plain text or RTF version from the Windows Clipboard, and wont render as rich as Word is able to.

Remember. The "footnote" is a key part of the ESV content. The translation team put it there on purpose. In some cases, it gives significant insight into their choice of words, textual variant used, or maybe a crossref where they think the same idea or aspect is used.

Some bible text without those notes, or in fact, without its source context, is more at risk of being misunderstand or misused.

I'm just saying, if I want to paste the footnotes too, maybe I dont care about the formatting too much, but I do want the content of that text.

Its OK that we see some things different.

I would regard it as a bug because the citation appears for Wordpad and other formats - which is footnote format in Word! L3 putout footnotes + citation to other formats.

The problem is with a deficiency in WordPad and Notepad, not in Logos 4. Those two programs do not include footer or header support.

Logos 3 behaves the same as Logos 4 in this respect. With Fully Formatted and WordPad selected in L3, the footnotes and citations do not come over to WordPad (at least in the Windows 7 version). The citation is copied into Notepad, but not in a footer.

Given the text of the UI offered by the application: "Copy Fully Formatted with Footnotes to WordPad", anything less than giving us the footnotes is a BUG in the Logos4 application. Its the job of the code behide the UI above, to ensure it pastes a valid clipboard format that can be understood by WordPad. This is NOT the fault of WordPad.

L3 in XP and Win7 outputs bible footnotes & citation, albeit inline with the text.

This is a simple text editor:-

L4 in XP and Win7 does not output footnotes. If L4 can output a citation inline with the text it should be able to reproduce what L3 does with footnotes!
