Vote: Allow Us to Set Go Box Preferences
Please vote for this Feedback idea: Allow Us to Set Go Box Preferences
I would like the ability to set preferences for how the Go Box works. For example, I would like to tell the Go Box to always open my preferred Bible when I type in a bible reference. That way I can just type bible references in the Go Box and hit enter without having to wait for the options to pop up.
Allow us to set Go Box preferences for what action we want the Go Box to take when we type in certain inputs (e.g. Bible reference, topic, lemma, etc.).
Right now, the Go Box almost always prefers the Factbook regardless of what I selected previously, whereas it used to prefer your last action. Let me set my own preferences in order to speed up my work. Constantly forcing the Factbook to the top (when that's not how I use/open the Factbook) slows me down.

The is often claimed in ths forums but I am puzzled as the Command box rarely prefers the Factbook for me. It prefers what I request most frequently for that input -- or something close to it. Factbook does pop up when I put in what is for me uncommon input and when I make an error in my input. I really wish I could get a handle on what users are doing to make Factbook appear as preferred.

I have tried to type in commands frequently to force it to remember my preferences. I also never open the Factbook from the Go Box, so it should really never be the top option. However, somehow it just keeps rising to the top. For me, it seems like it will temporarily honor my preference but then the Factbook somehow migrates back to being the top option when I literally never open the Factbook that way.
There seems to be inconsistency. I can't predict what the Go Box is going to do, so I'd like to be able to set my own preferences so that I can know for sure what it's going to do.

Just chatting. I never use the Go box (nor Factbook). So, I tried (for me) to see what Kiyah was talking about.
First, I typed in 'G' ... that listed Factbook. Then, I continued with Gen ... also Factbook. Then Gen 1:1 ... also Factbook.
Ok, next, I decided to 'train' the Go box by always selecting the Gen 1:1 Bible choice. It dutifully opened NABRE, even right next to my other Bibles on window #3. Good boy.
I did this 5 or 6 times, though the Go box kept giving me the Factbook as the preferred choice (and Enter > Factbook).
But eventually the Go box just got tired! Bad boy! No verse choice:
I gave up. I don't use the Go box anyway.

This is also my feeling. I use the passage study layout almost always.

I would expect the original setting prior to training to favor Factbook as FL views it as the universal starting point for studies (eventually). I have no idea how far back it goes to approximate user preference. I use the Command Box for nearly all opening of panels to there should be a great deal of data to draw on. I also rarely simply enter a reference ... I would enter Open NABRE to Exe 5:1 That may be why I don't experience the problem.

I've had a similar experience and this is why I don't use the Go Box that much. That and the fact that it doesn't return to its normal size after you open something with the Go Box, so it pushes all of my menus and shortcuts to the right, sometimes pushing stuff fully out of view.
But I really just want to be able to type in a bible reference and actually have it open...well....you know...the Bible...revolutionary thought. I'd like to be able to use it to open resources without losing sight of my menus and shortcuts, but alas.
I never use it to open the Factbook, and I don't even use it to open study layouts (since I rarely use those at all). Occasionally I may use the Lookup command but even that's rare. I find the Go Box to be more trouble than it's worth so I rarely use it, and when I use it to open a resource I make sure to drag the resource to open it rather than hitting enter.
I miss the old Command box. Much simpler times way back then. I typed a bible reference, hit enter, and lo and behold, my preferred bible just obediently opened to that passage. Good times...
Maybe Faithlife should change its motto to: "To use technology to force the Church to grow in the light of the Factbook."

Case in point, I just tried to type Heb 3:12 into the Go Box:
To MJ's question, I wonder if it reverts back to the Factbook when you have the Factbook open. But that makes no sense and is not the preferred action since I've been regularly trying to train the Go Box to prefer my preferred bible when I enter a bible reference and have never selected the Factbook from the Go Box.
Do you know if it's programmed to prefer the Factbook when you've used the Factbook recently or are currently using it? Even if you opened it using the Context Menu or Factbook Button (my most common ways of opening the Factbook) rather than the Go Box?

Exactly! Maybe a Factbook Systematic Theology volume.I literally just put in a bunch of different bible references and even some Enoch references (entered as both 1 Enoch and simply Enoch) and it kept preferring the Factbook each time.
I'm like you DMB, I give up.

Thanks for being persistent on this, everyone.
I did a bit more digging and discovered that we have a tiny little bug in here that has a pretty huge impact on your experience. Instead of ordering the suggestion groups according to the frequency of your last 25 selected commands, it was ordering the suggestion groups according to the order of your last 25 selected commands.
In other words, if 25 commands ago you used a command that opened a Tool of some kind, then the Tools group would show up first in the list.
I put a fix in place, which should end up showing up in version 9.17. At that point, if you most often pick a "Look Up" in the last 25 commands, then the "Look Up" group should show up first.
Hopefully everyone will find that their command box starts behaving in a much more civilized fashion.

That's great news. Thanks Andrew

So, if I just recently uninstalled and re-installed Logos within the past 10 days, would that explain why it just keeps defaulting to the Factbook for me? Is it because I have not yet entered 25 commands?
Anyway, I'm glad you found the problem and there's a fix in the works. Thanks Andrew!

No. It means that the command you selected 25 commands ago (or the first one if there have been fewer commands than that) was a command in the Tools group.

Okay thanks. So I should just put 25 bible references in the Go Box and then vow to never open any tool from the Go Box until the fix comes through. I should be able to make it to 9.17. lol

favor Factbook as FL views it as the universal starting point for studies (eventually)
I heard (I think Phil?) mention this in a video or forum post and cringed. I understand it being the "default (out of the box)" starting point for newer users to help them get oriented in the software and not be overwhelmed. "Universal" is what I have the issue with. I think Phil said, "we want all our users to start their study with the Factbook" or something to that effect. I prefer (and was taught) to start my study with the text itself. Step 1 of bible study for me is to Read the Text. When I open Logos the first thing I open is the Bible if it's not already open from my previous session. I don't want to be funneled or shoehorned into starting my study with the Factbook, but I like that the Factbook is there when I need it. Experienced users should be free to start their study how they want to start it. I start my study with the Bible and open the Factbook and other tools/guide/resources as needed. I let the text lead the way and take me where I need to go.
Just waxing philosophical here. Glad the bug is getting fixed, and hopefully more improvements (sans bugs) are coming to the Go Box in Logos 10.

Cringing was my first response as well . . . until I understood what he was really envisioning and how much it would cut double maintenance and thus free up resources to expand/improve/create application functions.

Question: are we sure this fix was implemented for the horizontal toolbar in Logos 10? When I switch to the horizontal toolbar it still seems to prefer the Factbook, but I don't seem to have that problem with the vertical toolbar. Is there different coding for the horizontal versus the vertical toolbar?

The implementation is the same. Note that it's not a question of prioritizing Factbook. It's prioritizing the Tools group (of which Factbook is a part). If you are frequently selecting other options from the Tools group, then the tools group is going to get prioritized.

When I use the go box I most frequently use it to open books or bible verses and to change settings. Is changing settings being counted as part of the tools group?
And why would I have a different experience vertical versus horizontal? I just had to enter a bunch of bible verses to get it to put 'preferred bible" on top. I seem to have to do that when I switch to horizontal.

Yes it is. You can determine this by entering a settings change command and looking at the group heading in the list of suggestions.

There should be no difference. If you type something, then hit escape to cancel the suggestions without selecting anything (this is important to avoid altering the order which is based on recent selections), then switch the position of the toolbar, then type the exact same thing, you should see the suggestions listed in the same order.
Please let me know with screenshots if you are seeing an ordering difference between the two positions with having actually run any commands between the two states.

Ah, okay.

Since I've retrained it they're both the same now. I'll keep an eye on it and post screenshots if I start to have a problem again.

You could also try to retrain one setting to be wrong.
