Evangelical Exegetical Commentary

What is the current status of the EEC? I pre-purchased the entire set (back in 2011?)? I think it was to include 44 volumes. I don't have THAT MANY in my library.
Is the project moving forward? All the posts I can see seem to be rather dated.

Hi David,
The most recent update on the status of the EEC can be found here: https://community.logos.com/forums/t/205676.aspx
In addition to the announcement of a new General Editor, here's the latest update on some of the forthcoming volumes:
- Galatians by Michael Burer and 1 & 2 Kings by John Oswalt are in the door and currently in review with the series editors.
- Leviticus, Joshua, and Hebrews are on track to be submitted by the end of the year.

Hello Jake,
You said this last year.
On the NT side, both Michael Burer (Galatians) and Buist Fanning (Hebrews) are close to submitting manuscripts. On the OT side, Richard Averbeck is supposed to submit his manuscript for Leviticus this fall. Additionally, the OT editors are close to completing a review of both John Oswalt’s 1–2 Kings and Abner Chou’s Deuteronomy. That's in addition to Joshua and 1 & 2 Chronicles which were already in review with the OT editors.
So according to your statement Burer has now submitted his manuscript which is with the editors. So last year John Oswalt 1 and 2 Kings was close to completing the review with the OT editors and this year his manuscript is now in the door waiting for the series editors. No word on Abner Chou Deuteronomy and no word on 1 and 2 Chronicles which we were told was already in reviews with OT Editors.
So, I am tracking Galatians, 1-2 Kings, Deuteronomy, 1-2 Chronicles as being with the editors. But Joshua who last year was with OT editors this year we are waiting on him to submit by the end of the year? I am going to assume the OT editors wants him to write some more. This is a fruitless exercise. Even when you all communicate it's with confusion. I have said I am going to stay out of this, and I am, but you are the face, and the limited communication is all we have for us to track what's going on. That limited communication needs to be accurate.

The entire project was a disastrous miscalculation. I’m just glad they allowed us to buy individual volumes later on. Originally you only had access to the released volumes if you had purchased the entire set. That also upset a lot of people from what I remember.

Agreed! I originally bought the set but the delivery of volumes was so bad I got my money back. But I do buy the individual volumes as well, and I have enjoyed them - and plan to keep buying them when they come out, if we are allowed to do so!

I bought the set when it was initially offered and plan on keeping it. I do wish that the communication was more frequent and less confusing.
Initially, Faithlife gave estimated actual release dates. However, because many of the volumes were not completed on time, these dates were continually adjusted. This resulted in a number of users asking when they would be released (I was one of them). Therefore, given the uncertainty of when volumes would be completed, I understand why the use of dates were discontinued.
Although the new terminology is supposed to indicate where a volume is at in the process, I find it confusing and not very helpful.
Something else that I find baffling is that after almost 11 years, 6 of the volumes: Numbers, Ruth, Jeremiah, [Hosea, Joel, Obadiah], [Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi], and 2 Corinthians do not even have authors assigned.
I'm sure that this is coming across as complaining, but that is not my intent. I just think that more frequent communication would alleviate a lot of frustration. I value the volumes I have and am looking forward to those that will be released. [:)]

Take a look at NICNT:
New International Commentary on the New Testament - Wikipedia
》The original hardbook editions published during the 1950s through c. 1991 were characterized by a distinctive dark blue cloth binding with a scarlet field and gold lettering on the spine....
This series started in the 1950s, till now it is still not completed.. so don't be disappointed by the progress of EEC.[;)]0 -

Some who paid up front might be dead by the time EEC is half way done or gets finished. I bet you didn’t think about that, did you? 😉

My thought exactly, that's why I didn't bite the bullet to pay up front.

Also something to keep in mind, the NICNT never promised to finish the series at a set time or date.
To be honest with the EEC, leaving aside the complition of the series, they have been slow in making progress and putting out volumes.

From a production standpoint, I would have made it a point to get the Pentateuch and Gospels out so the bedrock is covered. But that's just my take.

Given some our community members have passed away it’s quite possible that has happened.
Predicting when one commentary will be finished it’s a fools errand. Predicting a whole set is something else.
FL’s communication has left a lot to be desired but I have no regrets investing in the series up front.0 -
I wonder if there is any update on the production of this series. It has been very quiet the last few years. If they have given up on it or unable to deliver, better to announce it and refund those who paid for the series upfront. We can then use the money to buy new volumes whenever they become available.

Yes, there have been updates as to what is in what stage of editing, but I've not paid close attention

It would be nice if Jake could give us an update when he has time

True on volumes/fools-errand. But a date for the whole set, Bob didn't blanche. And since Bob (a) doesn't like to commit to anything, and (b) is quite conservative financially, one has to assume some 'somebodies' did a job on Bob. He certainly would have been long-familiar with hole-y commentaries, dashed-dreams, excuses-authors, etc.

I read somewhere Jake once said he would give quarterly updates, but that isn't happening.

The performance of Faithlife on the series is in keeping with my experience with two other publishers on series sold in advance.

Galatians and Job volumes now have ship dates listed. They're still nearly a year off, but at least this is progress.

Let's make a note of this "ship date" and check back next year to see if it is even close. These ship dates have been historically posted, then changed, then removed--all without explanation.
I purchased this series in June 2011 for $749. That's more than 12 years ago. We were told the entire series would be published within 6 years. Galatians by Michael Burer was scheduled for publication in 2018, and now it's Q3 2024.
Can Faithlife confirm that the manuscript has been turned in? If you don't demand the manuscript from these authors, it may never get it done. There has been a serious lack of commitment to those of us who helped fund this series by paying in advance.

Rick you are correct. We need to request the manuscripts. You cannot let people off that easily. I never like to bundle sets like the Evangelical Exegetical Commentary because of the commission and work needed. This is a good commentary of what we have so far.

I'm not involved with EEC for Lexham, but I can confirm that the manuscripts for EEC Job and EEC Galatians exist. Both are in production and on track for the indicated Q3 2024 release.
