Scheduling Indexing

I've been searching the forums for any solutions to the annoyance of constant indexing. I don't see any thing since about 2011. You'd almost think it was solved. Or that people had lost hope.

Which is it? I open Logos with a resigned sigh every time - at home or at the office - knowing that updates, downloads will occur at startup, and indexing will bog down my computer (especialy the old office beast.) for a while.

I've got the update scheduling set, and I've tried writing a batch file for task scheduler to restart logos in the night to trigger any pending installs downolads and indexing, but I haven't gotten that to work right.

Am I missing something in settings that everyone else knows about? Does everyone else have quantum computers? Or are you all in perpetual gratitude for this trial by which God is teaching you patience?

I'm aware this is something that I don't really think about too much as it doesn't really cause me any problems.

Yes, often resource updates will take place, and I haven't put any specific scheduling in place to limit when it happens. And indexing happens as a result of that.

But it doesn't seem to impact the performance of my computer at all - either in terms of Logos or more generally - and so I just let it happen.

I do have a reasonably specced computer but the main factor I think is having a solid state disk.

What sort of disk do you have in your computer?

I agree with Graham... doesn't affect me at all. In fact I don't even notice it. With indexing... you will need extra space on your hard disk - which I think is what Graham is getting at.

This is true - but my point was more about the benefit of having a solid state disk as opposed to a hard drive with spinning parts.

So this machine has a 1.8 TB Raid 5 Array, that is 1/3 full.

no SSD, but the 3 disk raid is not a performance drag. it's just an older machine I can't afford to replace.

Indexing bogs down everything I'm using (browser, Word, Logos), but is essential to reliable searches. so I don't want to have to pause it. It is worse working from two computers, because 1) twice the indexing, and 2) I might have a few days or week away from one computerand have a larger number of downloads installs and indexing to do when I get back to one computer or the other,(invariably with a last minute change to do)

It just seems so avoidable if Logos would launch itself at two am, restart and index all during Matins, when I am otherwise occupied, but somehow this has never been implemented.

I wonder if RAID 5 with HDDs adversely affects Logos' index speed since write speed is a bit slower.

Indexing usually happens as a result of new downloads.

You can't schedule indexing, but you can limit downloads to only happening between certain hours. You could set it for the hours when you are normally asleep and that should cut down substantially on your indexing woes. I have mine set to between Midnight and Midnight, which means any time of day. But you can pick different times from those dropdowns.

Or you can postpone downloads/indexing until you are ready by selecting No to "Automatically Start Downloads". This is good for both machines as startup won't necessitate a download.

In truth, it's basically the former. Most people who used to complain about indexing (or be candidates for complaining about it) now use machines with SSDs, and the speed difference for indexing (and a lot of other things) functionally solves the problem for most people.
