Favorites

A refreshed favorites tool makes it even easier to add and find the passages that are important to you.

What is it?

The refreshed favorites tool makes it much easier to add favorites from open resources, and allows you to filter your favorites to easily find what you’re looking for. In addition, favorites can also be accessed within the resource panel, making it easy to locate all your favorites within a specific resource, even if they’re in different folders.

How to access it?

Favorites panel:

Open the Logos 10 Desktop app.
Click on the Tools icon.
Search “Favorites” in the search bar.
Click on the Favorites tool.

Favorites in a resource panel:

Open the Logos 10 Desktop app.
Open any resource.
Expand the left sidebar by clicking on the three horizontal lines icon in the top left corner of the resource panel.
Click the Favorites icon (the star) in the left sidebar.

When viewing the favorites using the resource panel, besides the Quicklinks I only see two of my folders of the 8 or more folders which are visible from the favorites tool. Should I be able to see all my favorites in the resource panel?

The favorites panel in the resource is designed to just show those favorites that can be found in that resource. We are aware that this can make it difficult to add new favorites to folders that don't yet have any favorites in that resource, and we are considering possible changes for the future to improve this.

Thanks Andrew, I just noticed the favorites which show up are only for that resource. Came here to post but you answered first.

If there was a checkbox for 'Show All' or similar, that might help for adding favorites. For selecting a favorite, I like how it shows the favorites in only the current resource when using the in-resource panel (since the main Favorites feature already shows all whenever it's opened).

I am confused as to why limiting my ability to navigate my favorites should be helpful. When I am studying a resource I very rarely want to ONLY stay within that resource. I want access to my favorites for quick and seamless navigation to other resources/links. The incorporation of the limited favorites menu in the new dynamic toolbar really exacerbates this problem. I would strongly prefer for there to be only one unified favorites tool experience that includes all my favorites regardless of what specific resource I am in.

What you are saying is quite simple and has a very simple solution. For your usage, you have no use for the resource favorites sidebar. Rather, for your usage you need the generic favorites panel. For others, the resource favorites sidebar is useful and the favorites panel is less commonly used. Neither should request changes that hinder the other group unless there is a very strong workflow case for it.

A strong case could be made that the current setup is confusing. But I don't need to be the one to make that case. I have a feeling plenty of other users will make that case for me when they ask why their favorites are not showing.

An identical name with an identical icon showing different results is a solid recipe for confusion. This is even more true regarding the dynamic toolbar, as there is nothing at all to indicate that the favorites button on the toolbar is resource specific.

The fact that it exists inside a resource panel should be a huge clue that it relates to that resource. Logos is riddled with identical icons in different contexts giving different results. If it is not specifically tied to the resource, it should be removed entirely from the sidebar because it does not belong in the resource panel.

I like the way it currently works. When I am in a resource I can click on favourites on the resource toolbar and access favourites primarily focussed on that resource. I use it for bookmarks mostly. If I have a notebook for that resource I drag that in there so I can easily open it.

I have also dragged the Favourites icon from the Tools feature and dropped it on one of the Quick Links in the resource favourites so I can get quick access to the global Favourites from within the resource.

I would agree that the name could better differentiate the two views.

Solid point. I hope that as this aspect of favorites rises to prominence with the introduction of the dynamic toolbar in the future, other users will be able to understand how it all ties together more easily than I was. Your logic is solid. I guess ultimately what I'm saying is that I'm a bit slow. Perhaps adjustments would be possible to make the interaction between the two menus more intuitive. If not, users like me will just have to work through it the hard way.

The disadvantage is that those who never want Favorites filtered by resource must learn to continue as they always have and ignore the new feature.

I feel like specifically discussing the favorites menu of the desktop app is more appropriate in this thread, so I have copied your reply from the Beta forum here. I would not put myself in the camp of never wanting favorites filtered by resources. What I want is to maintain organization within the general favorites tool. I understand how filtering favorites could be helpful.

When you reference filtering the favorites menu, are you specifically talking about the resource-specific favorites menus, or is there another filtering option that I am unaware of?

If I could figure out how to keep my favorites tool clean by using folders to organize my resource-specific favorites so that I don't have hundreds of folders cluttering up my general favorites tool, I would be more than content utilizing favorites filters. The problem is that when I try to organize the favorites tool by moving the resource-specific favorites to other folders in the main favorites tool, they disappear from the resource favorites menu.

Typically I am using the Global Favourites (GF) differently than then Resource Specific Favourites (RF) If I am studying a resource I make a folder in the GF and put searches, links etc in there and often subfolders also. The RF I mainly use for bookmarks and access to specific notes and the quick links.

You can create folders in the RF that appear in the GF view. I hadn't use that before so I just gave it a go and I think there is with a bug in favourites.

I can make a folder in the RS and put many kinds of resource links and favourites in there. I can drag the folder in the GF view to where I want it to be and continue to add favourites in the RF view which are duplicated. But when I close the resource and open it again everything is gone.

I am not sure of someone has mentioned this already as a possible bug I hadn't tried this before the latest beta update today so I am not sure of it is a new bug or has been there all along.

If it is a bug, then I am hopeful. I have had a very difficult time trying to organize the bookmarks in GF that were created in RF. If this process were fixed/simplified I would feel much better about using the Favorites tool in both of these ways.

Agreed I thought I had found a great new method then it all fell apart. I just reported in in the Feedback wanted for the New Resource Toolbar on Desktop.

All these questions are being raised now because before the Toolbar this “favorites” tool within and limited to one resource was not so visible and used.
In fact, it was something I didn't know about until then, even though I'm not a lay Logos user.
When this toolbar is launched as a Logos standard, I imagine that it will rain down questions from users, just as it did for me. Perhaps an explanatory pop-up will settle many people's questions and appease them.
