Feature: Modern UI

Modern UI

A simpler, more customizable interface makes Logos more accessible, gives you more space, and makes common tasks more accessible.

What is it?

The new left toolbar on Desktop gives you more real estate for reading. Clearer and more consistent UI elements help Logos be more intuitive. A modern look makes Bible study a more pleasant experience.

How to access it?

  1. Open the Logos 10 Desktop app.

  2. The vertical toolbar will automatically show up.

Note

  • There are also more minor UI updates on mobile and web.

  • The left toolbar can be moved back to the top by switching the “Application Toolbar Location” in your Program Settings.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on this new feature. Please provide your feedback in the comments below.

Initial impression is I really like the minimized interface that allows maximum screen space. I especially love the collapsible left menu. This is super helpful on my smaller travel computer. I would like to be able to set the various tools to be windowed or paned, partial or full screen, and have Logos remember my choice if I set it to do so.

The ability to customize is the right way to go. More intuitive is the right way to go as well. Keep those in Logos future.

    Thanks so much!

Love it. L10 feels clearer, less cluttered, with more usable vertical space for reading in each column.

At the same time it's familiar: everything is there (accessible), even the shortcuts I created previously.

Two things I didn't see immediately:

    • A decent-sized Command box pops out by clicking the Logos icon (wth toolbar collapsed).
    • Someone can put the toolbar back at the top if they want (through Program Options).

This clean interface is more than a relocated toolbar. It's sensitivity to moving our focus to what matters (intuitively). Thanks, Logos.

I don't like the toolbar on the left side, but it looks like I'm in the minority. I do very much like the fact that I can change the placement of the toolbar and put it back at the top, which I did. Thank you for that ability.

I was in the minority, since all my layout windows are horizontally contrained.  Then, I realized my main window was vertically constrained.

So, I guess I switched sides.  But yes, I'd say 'it depends' .... and so an option is best.

I'm part of that "minority" as well  [;)]  And at my age, I've learned a few times that "modern" does not necessarily mean "better" ...

I do like the toolbar on the left. I can see where some may like to keep it at the top. It's nice that the option exists. I keep the toolbar collapsed on the left side for the most part.

Is there a keyboard shortcut to expand/collapse the vertical toolbar? I might be overlooking it somewhere.

Yes there is.... see below... click the "lesser than sign" [<] and it will get slimmer....

I will chime in. I like it (collapsible menu bar on left). I put my Mac dockbar on the side as well. I started doing this when I realized my monitors are widescreen so I have more width and the vertical is the constraining dimension. I used to leave the mac dockbar on the bottom and have it autohide but I prefer it always being visible in most cases

This is brilliant. I hadn't thought of this. Trying it out!

EDIT: Edit to add that I love the new UI. It absolutely serves what faithlife are promoting with a renewed focus upon the text. Looks really clean. Im a fan.

You may want to reconsider once you update to macOS Ventura (v13). A new feature called "stage manager" will take up space on the left side (if you choose to use it).

I was resistant to the left side bar at first. But I quickly came around. I quite like it there now. I suggest giving it a chance before turning it off.

The UI update is a nice visual refresh.  However, there's a few small details that I wish were updated.  These details were already suggested when Logos 9 released so these are not new feedback.

    • We should be able right click on the menu bar to add/delete folders.  The current implementation is clunky.
    • Similarly, we should be able to drag and drop items into these folders and drag them out of the folders if needed.
    • I still don't understand why it's necessary to have the Logos logo as a button on the menu bar.  It's just taking up space.  The window bar already has the logo and name of the software so I think the icon is redundant. At least the button does something this time.
    • I wish the "x" button wasn't so close to the arrow button when a window has too many tabs.  I accidentally click the "x" button many times when I'm trying to click to the arrow to scroll over to an open tab.  I'm not sure how this should be reimplemented, but it's a small issue.  This is not a new issue.
    • I wish there was a way to have themes/customizations on a per window basis.  Another popular program has had that for a long time.
    • I wish you didn't have to restart the program when changing themes.

These are all quality of life features that would really make a difference in everyday use for me.  I hope some or all of these items will be addressed someday.

Overall I'm still happy to upgrade and support Logos.

Left side toolbar has a downside with a certain number of shortcuts, not all shortcuts are visible and a "more shortcuts" icon is needed to pop up those ... Toolbar on top however has ample room.

Saving "screen real estate" also has its glitches depending on how layouts are designed, because in any case (!) one line worth of screen space (either vertical on left, or horizontal on top) is used up by the toolbar.
With some layouts, one might gain an additional line of readable text in a panel, with some layouts side by side panels become smaller and lines for reading are same or even less ...

Not everything "modern" or "fashionable" turns out to always be better ... or maybe, I'm just too "old fashioned"? [^o)]

Maybe we'll get an autohide feature someday similar to the Windows taskbar.  Hover over the left or the top for the toolbar to popup and over the open windows so it doesn't change the layouts.

Yes, that's correct. With larger monitors, the arrow gets pretty small. A keyboard shortcut would be great.

I use two ultra-wide monitors and would prefer to have the vertical toolbar on the left side of the right screen because this would place it more in the center of my workspace.  It's now on the far left and, as a result, fairly hard to read,

Is there any way to move it between monitors?

I'm not sure which X's are being referenced, but:  Please don't hide ANYTHING pending mouse-over -- without a user-controlled option. Please make the cutesy ghost scrollbars and buttons (which have been with us a while) a user-controlled option. For not-totally-blind-but-impaired (and perhaps elderly) users, requiring a mouse-over for visibility of UI elements is like telling someone to call you to get your phone number.

    Excellent.

But I must caution you, losing your Logosian secret translator ring is in the works, if you don't recognize 'pretty' trumps use-ability for the Logosia designer.  Let's shape up.

More seriously, I've had LogosX since late 2009, and I can't say as I've ever recommended it.  Powerful yes.  Love it, yes. Easy to learn and usable for people who have real lives, no.

I am no longer a young dog, and new tricks are more difficult to learn, but I am gradually coming around to the Left side Toolbar.  It takes up less space and is less obtrusive. I am also that finding that I can more quickly locate my most-used tools.   Time will tell where the Toolbar will be when the dust settles.

I kept switching from left to the top the first week, when I found it was less Cultural to have it on the left side...still learning after some 30 years of more of being a Logos user.  Lots of great features on Logos 10, 2 thumb up [Y][Y]
