Logos 10 loses my books

Many of the books I have bought in Logos can no longer be downloaded onto my Android phone. If I press the 'About this book' the message is, 'This book is only available online because it is not part of your Logos Bible Software library.' Two points:

Yes it is part of my library and I have paid for it; and

It used to download onto the same phone.

I have both Logos and Verbum and it happens in both, but not necessarily with the same books.

As well as slowing things down generally, reading online does not work at all when underground on the London Tube network.

In order to track this down, we need some specific titles. It would also be helpful to see the license metadata which you may have to pull from the desktop. In the meantime, check to verify that you have only one email address on record for your resources.

There are a few books that come free with the Logos app that can only be downloaded if you also own the resource. If you're not able to download them, it's possible that:

    1. You don't own them, after all
    2. You're not signed in properly
    3. There's a bug that is preventing you from downloading them

If you can check (1) and (2), we'll check to see if we can find (3).

And you have my sympathy on the tube - the WiFi isn't bad in stations, but doesn't help anywhere else!

Here are a couple of examples:

Joseph Blenkinsopp: Isaiah 40-55 (Anchor Bible) - Purchased 10th March 2022

    LLS:ANCHOR23BIS
    2015-04-27T22:05:53Z
    ANCHOR23BIS.logos4

It was already downloaded in Verbum app and is still there, but in Logos app it shows up in the library and says I can't download it because I don't own it.

Isaac Morales: The Bible and Baptism - Purchased 8th February 2022

    LLS:BIBLEBAPTISM
    2022-05-18T23:11:09Z
    BIBLEBAPTISM.logos4

Cannot download in either Verbum app or Logos app

It looks as though anything that was downloaded on the Verbum app when it upgraded is still there and anything that wasn't can't be downloaded. In the Logos app, having uninstalled and reinstalled it, now it seems as though I only have the standard resources that come with the app.

I've just uninstalled the Logos app again, since it's unusable as it stands.

I'm running Android version 12 on a Motorola g 5G Plus (I think it's got a different name in the USA - One 5G. Code name is nairo). The OS version is LineageOS 19-20221005-nightly-nairo.

    All help greatly appreciated.

I've just reinstalled the Logos app and it's still doing the same.

Probably unrelated, but it also freezes every time I go into the Tabs view.

I'm also having the same issue on my Android phone where all the books which I've purchased are no longer downloadable stating that it's not part of my Logos Library. They can only be read while online. Only books which I've downloaded previously before the update are readable offline. I think Logos made a big blunder with the Android app. I've raised a ticket on this matter. It's disappointing that Logos did not do a better quality control before releasing the latest version for Android. Edit: In case, it's necessary I have also added for the example below, my order number 25664217.

I am guessing this is caused by purchasing the wrong upgrade. I think is you purchase a library upgrade instead of a feature upgrade, it screws up your library. Just a educated guess..I say this because there are two different LOGOS 10 purchase paths, feature upgrade, and library upgrade.

We think this might be an Android-specific bug. Is anyone having the problem on iOS?

  • Andrew

I have the same problem on IOS. I have not purchased a Logos 10 upgrade, however my entire library is not available and many which say ”you already own this product” on the website is not available on the new redesigned mobile app (but were in the previous edition). For example, the Eastern Orthodox Bible (EOB) is not available for the mobile app for me, but is shown as purchased. Another is “Commentary on Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist: Homilies 1–47” published by Catholic University of America shows as purchased on the website but not the mobile app.

I don't know if it's related, but I think there used to be an indication on the library for which resources were downloaded to the phone. That isn't showing now (assuming it did before).

  • Greg Turley

Yes I do not see that indicator option either.  You could filter by 'Not Downloaded' then could click on the indicator to download resource

Hi Andrew, please follow the steps below to do an index rebuild:

    1. Enter "Rebuild index" into a resource search bar at the top (see image below for more context)
    2. Tap the dropdown button that says "Rebuild index" with the settings gear next to it
    3. Wait about 30 seconds
    4. Go back to your library and check the number discrepancies again

Once you've done this, can you please let me know if this resolved your issue, or not.

    Hi Ali,
I was not able to figure out how to do the rebuild index on the app for iphone. The image didn’t help as it looks different than the iphone layout. I tried typing it in in several different places but it did a word search in the resource instead of bringing up a command option. I might be in the wrong spot. However, I did a library sync in the options, and that fixed the issue. As far as I know all of my resources are available on my phone again. I did not realize this step was necessary. The update was done automatically through automatic updates, and I just noticed that resources I was using previously on my phone were no longer available when I went to use them again.

    Having the same issue here.

When selecting books 'Mortal Fire' which I recently acquired is at the top of the list as in my library.

Then, the I select info about this book I'm met with the message: "This book is only available online because it is not part of your Logos Software library. Learn more at Logos.com"

Hi, I have the same issue on my android phone. I'm Korean and I've purchased several Korean bible translations, but none of them I can download now(I can read online only).

I guessed problem has come with new logos app update, so I deleted the app, cleaned phone cashe then installed the app again, and now I found I cannot download any of my books which I've purchased.

There's another issue, if I open a new tap and press "+" to open a book, I cannot search any book on my library. I can search my books when I press library icon directly, though.

I think updated android app has problem on synchronising, I don't have same problem on my ipad app which has been updated as well.

    Hi Truefriend,

The 'No books in library opened from tab' issue has been reported on a few threads and they're looking into it. I've got the same problem myself - I don't know whether they're two separate issue or two aspects of one bigger issue.

Android generally has more issues because there are more versions of Anroid and devices running it. Testing for every possible combination is nigh-on impossible - it's a problem for all software that has both iOS and Android versions.

Exact same issue on Android. I had downloaded resources on my Samsung 21 5G a while ago, before the update to Logos 10. So these resources show up on my phone. But I just bought a Samsung Android tablet and installed the Android mobile app, which was the latest Logos 10 build. Nothing at all from my library can be downloaded on the Android tablet. Even the ones that were already downloaded on my Android phone and are available in my desktop Logos 9.

I did not purchase any upgrades (library nor features) and am still on the latest build for Logos 9.

Same issue for me.  I'm on Android 12 and only resources that I downloaded prior to the update are available offline.  Sync does not work for me.  Based on prior comments, it's probably not a good idea to uninstall and reinstall since you will lose all of your downloaded resources.  Hopefully this is a high priority to fix.  Thanks advance for working on this.

    Here's an interesting one:

I also have the Faithlife ebooks app on my phone and that hadn't been updated in the latest updates (as far as I know). I opened it just now, for the first time in a long time.

The library was showing a tick for books which had been downloaded and the download symbol for books that hadn't been downloaded.

I downloaded a book (Finding Jesus in the Storm by John Swinton, but that's almost certainly irrelevant).

The book downloaded and is now showing as on my device with the option to remove it from the phone.

** The tick for on device and download symbol for not on device are now gone, and all other books not on device now have the same message as in Logos and Verbum apps. **

Somehow, downloading one book triggerd the error.

The order of sections in the menu for Logos and Verbum is:
       Library
       Documents
       Guides
       Tools
       Community
       Settings
Tools has Factbook, Preaching Mode, Reference Scanner, Text Comparison, Media, and Atlas subitems.

The order of sections in the menu for Faithlife ebooks is:
       Library
       Documents
       Tools
       Community
       Settings
Tools only has Media as a subitem.
    Library does not have Courses.
Community does not have Church Presentations.

It seems that Faithlife ebooks not updated to the same version as Logos and Verbum but downloading a book triggered the error.

I don't know how much help (if any) that is.

Same problem here. I noticed because it happened with my preferred Bible!

Also constantly freezing up anytime I switch views until I restart the app.

  • Bede
    Bede Member Posts: 44 ✭✭

    IT WORKS!

Thank you, the new update seems to have fixed it.

After updating the Verbum app this morning (GMT) and checking the library, it took a short while (about a minute) with a progress bar at the top of the screen before showing ticks for downloaded books and the download symbol for other books. I tried downloading one and it worked.

Then I updated the Faithlife ebooks app, with the same result. There is no update yet for the Logos app; presumably FLare waiting for feedback on the other two (probably less widely-used) apps before rolling it out.(If that is so, it might help them if others using Verbum or Faithlife ebooks can also report back.)

    Once again, thank you.

Here is my experience of the problem:  When seeking to download to my Android phone any of the resources that I definitely own – and are already stored on my Windows computer running Logos 8, but have not as yet been saved to my smartphone – I receive this message: “This book is only available online because it is not part of your Logos Bible Software library.”  All books previously downloaded and secure on my phone continue to be available for offline access, but not the rest of the library that I have purchased.  This is very puzzling.

It seems that many other users, who previously had no such issue, are now experiencing similar difficulties and so apparently something is amiss with the updated Android app itself and they are not caused, e.g., by logging in problems.

As I constantly use Logos on my phone, the alternative of tardy online retrieval of material is, I am sure you will understand, an extremely frustrating and gloomy prospect and is manifestly completely unsatisfactory.

Please, please; this bug needs to be fixed … and urgently.  Break out the insect spray and oil the rusty lock on the invaluable, incomparable Logos treasure chest!

(The urgency and personal importance of this issue may be gauged by the fact that this is the very first time I have ever posted on any internet forum in over a quarter of a century online.)

As a developer, I understand these things, however, the latest trend in the industry at large is to make the user base Beta testers whether they like it or not since timelines seem to be immutable in the business world.

I'd sure hate to think Faithlife does things this way, especially since many people have a significant investment.

Personally, I just got the Bronze Feature upgrade to my Silver package since I am not a pastor and only really wish to deep dive into the study of God's word.

I hate to tell you, but this is actually a recommendation by nameless forum participants ... fast development, ship it and fix it.

Normally I'm not uncomfortable with that; 'fix it' usually is pretty quick (sometimes hours).  But the L10 ship (for me) was/is a major kludge.  Both the mobiles and the desktop have major bugs, and limited communication from bug-HQ ... this AM I felt sorry for Ali, starting so early.

I guess I'm old school, but every application I ever wrote was thoroughly tested on all platforms it could run on by an independent tester whose job it was to break it until they couldn't anymore.  I'm sure that it'll get fixed, but "what if" the fix isn't possible at all?  I've seen this before and it has killed lesser developers.

Uh? I don't remember this and I think I would because it is so wrong in so many ways.

I guess I'm old school, but every application I ever wrote was thoroughly tested on all platforms it could run on by an independent tester whose job it was to break it until they couldn't anymore.

Unfortunately, the Android platform is harder to run public betas on. While there were a few known problems and incomplete features in the RC's, this release has gone relatively smoothly. Have you worked with people who programmed for ATM's or MRI machines? If you do, you know that no commercial public software comes close to a zero error rate policy. I spent decades on payroll/personnel applications with 30,000+ critics twice a month, I know something about accuracy and stability. However, we had much more control over the platforms on which the applications had to perform. FL is a small company with a history of less than perfect testing and less than completed features. But can we keep the expectations and complaints realistic? I've spent 4 hours at night with a Chinese programmer tracking down a failure in a major XML editor. For several years, I could crash Microsoft Word at will. The "unable to break it" rule is highly dependent on the skill and imagination of the tester. If you think of the reported problems in a scatterplot, most of them are concentrated in the hardest to test and widest variety of systems areas. In the next cycle, perhaps the beta testers will concentrate more heavily on them. This cycle, the concentration was generally on the first platform to have the new/modified feature.

Yeah, I believe you.  It's useless to complain about it, and I know it.  This is one of the reasons I got out of development to become a full time data engineer.  The industry has definitely passed me by and I have no regrets switching fields back in 2010.  I guess you could say I saw the handwriting on the wall [;)]

At the risk of suggesting everyone become a beta-tester, can I suggest downloading either the Verbum or the Faithlife ebooks app. Both of these received an update yesterday, which is working on my phone. The Logos app hasn't yet received that update and still isn't working. Whether FL is using those two apps to tst the update I don't know, but it might get you a usable app.

I hate to disagree MJ but I think the quality of the final product Android is fairly poor. There are a number of fairly serious issue which are easily identified by end users and materially affect the products function. For instance, books cannot be downloaded, many functions relying on the library don't work throughout the app. I'm pretty disappointed by the quality of what has been shipped compared to the desktop version.

Plus there is a host of more minor issue which should have been identified in the QA process too. It's not reasonable to expect perfection however the number of bugs creeping through seems substantially above what I think users ought to bear. For me parts of the app are rendered unusable for some users.

That issue is proving to be quite widespread now, but it's certainly not affecting all Android users. It affected my first install but not my second, and that's the same exact device on the same OS for the same user. Testers can only report issues that they encounter or can reproduce, and if all goes well on the first boot, I don't think this issue comes up at all.

I have encountered far worse in apps that have been available to the public for some time. We're a week in to a dramatically increased user base trying the app out in a ton of different scenarios. Stuff will inevitably come up, and the most you can hope for is a quick response from the team and good communication and I think we're getting both.

  • Paul M
    Paul M Member Posts: 693 ✭✭✭

Thanks for the comments James. For reference my second install manifested the same issue. I too have experienced far worse in apps, however for an app that costs as much as logos, with > 1m installs etc I think the quality isn't at the desired level, certainly from my user experience. It is probably worth noting that the vast majority of issues reported on this forum to Faithlife regarding the Android App are met with a confirmation that the issue can be reproduced and wil be fixed. That tells us that these are not hard to find issues but are straightforward to repro. In essence the Logos QA effort didn't pick up a whole number of issues in the final build.  Hence my comments...

This is a perasive issue across MANY Android installations - unless you are all running Android 12L on a Galaxy Tab (or Android 12 on a Samsung S22 Ultra). This SHOULD have been picked in testing. (I say this as a full-time software developer for the last 35+ years.)
