BUG: 4.0cB7: Don't install Beta 7 until you read thisClosed

WOW - Beta 7 is a nightmare for me at present. See notes below, and also http://community.logos.com/forums/78.aspx which seems to be the same issue.

After install of Beta 7, the first startup took a MANY minutes sitting with just the banner / splash screen. Every other beta has been more like 20-45 seconds. Beta 6 used to start and go to my layout, with all as it was, in around 12-15 seconds.

Beta 7 is giving me many black screens as the other thread above.

Opening a new resource takes maybe 30 seconds, and maybe a black screen for a while. Beta 6 was 2-3 seconds.

Hover over a verse ref in B7, takes 10 seconds to display, B6 was 1-2 seconds tops.

A Passage Guide on B7 tooks a few minutes, and many black screens (not responding message). B6 was 15-20 seconds.

I will attempt to debug / log / monitor Windows etc for clues and report anything additional I can find. Few clues yet, but the memory usage graphs seems to grow very high. Around 400 MB at present.

My B6 install was to default locations, and an admin user account, on Vista32, with 4 GB RAM (so 3).

My B7 is on the same PC, non-admin account, completely fresh install from nothing. But to D:\Logos4 directory, not default (in user app etc).

For me at least, B7 is unusable. I still have my B6 so will attempt to compair and provide "facts" if I am able, to assist with whatever is going on here.

    Not being argumentative...just providing information...ok?

I have none of these problems...B7 works just as fine as B6 and B5....

I'm running a middle of the road Dell laptop, 2.2GHZ core duo, 6GB DDR3, 7200 HDD, 1GB Video card.

Again...not mimizing your troubles, just providing another view.

NO - I did not post this to start any fights, or disagree with anyone for which Beta 7 is working fine.

Some of the users, me included, run the Beta and have no other version if all goes wrong. Its a "fluke" that I installed a fresh copy into a new user account a few hours ago, and B7 popped up as an update right after.

    My point is simple:
    1) If you are running Beta and have no Release install, don't rush into B7 until tomorrow and we get some official response. Just in case.
    2) Something is very different about B7 for me, but I have made it clear, its not apples v. apples, due to different user account, and admin v. non-admin, and default v. non-default install directory.

I hope to get some more facts to post here, but wanted to caution anyone that can maybe hold back on B6 for another day or so.

(Please excuse the many grammer and typo errors I see I added in the first post.)

    Jim,

    No problem brother...no fights :)

I just always wonder why two experiences could be so different...its' not about size of machine....there is some elusive element that nobody has put their finger on yet....

Jim, sorry to hear you are having problems, I have noticed no extra sluggishness (or extra black not responding) on my netbook compared to B5/B6, so far so good as they say..

Never Deprive Anyone of Hope.. It Might Be ALL They Have

I haven't had any problems with B7 either, but John Fugh has also reported bad performance problems.

    Well - Now I'm confused ...

I restarted B7 with logging (Control Key during start), and it did everything fine, and fast, and no pausing or black screens.

1-2 second response times as normal for many things: Hover over links, Click link to open new resource, etc ...

Clicking Passage Guide for a new referance in a different NT book (to reduce caching effects), takes 4 seconds to open and show list of first 6 commentarys.

So, its working fine now. I changed nothing. I'm pleased its good now, but I sure can't explain the earlier results.

but I sure can't explain the earlier results.

I wonder if it has something to do with specific resources or highlighting.  Not sure, but I see a difference for the better as long as I don't run Spurgeon's Lectures (vol 1).  Others may start seeing poor performance issues if they open the "magic" resource.  Mine just happens to be this book.

Yes, you're right. I'm getting performance issues with Westminster Theological Journals. Many other resources open fine.

No problems with either Lectures to My Students or Westminster Journals here.

    I've now deduced a pattern.

The resources that people are having problems with are all "Reformed" resources...so I deduce that there is a conspiracy among the "Arminian Programmers" to undermine Reformed resources by making them so glitchy that we'll all just give in and buy "Finney's Systematic Theology" and be done with it!

Or...it could just be a coincidence...

I'm getting exactly the same issue with beta 7. It's taking around 50 seconds to open a resource. (Copy and paste the text below into Notepad to see the full log of the relevant events.)
