RC1: Comments on Maps Search and Books Search

I am wondering about the point of Maps Search when Media Search > Maps is still available and (almost) give the same results.

1. Results differ for place:Jerusalem and Jerusalem. Why is Atlas different (150 vs 159) and why the great variation with Library (540/35 vs 786/93)? Why does Logos 9 differ (527/35 vs. 770/93)?

2. I would prefer a single format (no datatype) for Places to avoid confusion.

but why do thing:"House, Permanent dwelling, Building" or thing:eye produce results in Atlas?

3. "Your documents" should be renamed as it is no longer appropriate.

4. Does Maps really need two options when All Maps would be adequate?

5. What happened to PB in Maps (is it hidden if no results)?

6. Will Media > Maps be removed?

7. When will Factbook be removed from Books Search?

1. I'll have to get back to you -- I'm seeing similar results of 150 vs 159 but not 100% sure why. My theory is the first query is a more defined search while "Jerusalem" is more loose since we didn't define it, but I hear you on I would imagine those being pretty similar since we know Jerusalem is a place, if that makes sense.

2. Can you give me an example. I may not be following 100% on my end which is on me. I'm thinking you are meaning no need to add "place" and rather just type in Jerusalem should obtain the most search results?

3. Can you point me to where you are seeing this?

4. You thinking where it says Maps we rename that to All Maps and get rid of the picker "All Maps" in blue? (see image)

#5 is due to how we mark images to be recognized as maps and PB isn't supported with that metadata

This is likely related to the fact that you can get back results for the search event:"Jerusalem is captured" and other things. I think the raw text search tries to match against the rendered references.

If you wanted to only see those 9 missing results you can do a query search of `jerusalem NOT place:Jerusalem` where you should see 9 results.

For example when you search just `jerusalem` its matching against all these items as well. (see image)

Clause search has its own engine and syntax whilst Media and Everything (in L9 Basic) use the Text search engine which caused confusion as to the correct syntax to use for results e.g. does the tagging for Media > Maps require a datatype or not? In Everything, a datatype makes sense for Library (Downloaded) but is uncertain for Library (Cloud), Bookstore and Your Documents, and won't work for Fuzzy Bible and a few other sections!

Maps as a search "type" should clarify what datatypes to use or use plain text like "Jerusalem" but parse it as needed to get the best results. I think this is where FL need to be with the rationalization or extraction of former sub-types like this and Everything. We don't need to know about "rendered references", but you need to be certain of what is happening so we don't flounder around with unlikely hits on an Event: with "Jerusalem" in its name!

The parsing should apply to Maps > Atlas and Maps > Library (Downloaded) etc., so we avoid suggestions like "Search for place:Jerusalem instead".

Maybe your version no longer has it... but in 10.1 RC1 Your documents still appears under Media Search, where it really applies to "Books" and not user documents (All Books includes the same three sections, but does the name "Books" really describe the sections!?).

Remove Maps > Atlas but keep Maps > All Maps which includes a section for Atlas.

And this is the sort of rationalisation we need in L10.

It will be less confusing and FL can more easily apply my suggestions at 1. and 2.

A simple rationalisation is called for (see my previous post on #2). Users should not have to be concerned about the inner workings for Maps.
