I initiated a search for very time Jesus prayed with the idea of understanding how He conducted prayer for Himself and for others. I did a search with the terms: Jesus: pray and got results from the synoptic gospels but nothing from John. I became curious and discovered that John used the Greek word for ask rather that pray in his gospel.
How might I refine my search to pick up these kinds of nuances better?
I also missed His statement in Matthew's gospel where He told the disciples that "this kind does not go out except by fasting and prayer" because Jesus is not directly referred to in that verse in Matt. 17:21.

Mt 17:21 is not in every bible, but the similar Mk 9:29 should be.
You need person:Jesus to get the referents. Try (pray OR prayer) WITHIN 15 WORDS person:Jesus and use Match All forms.
There are datasets for Prayer e.g. Literary Types, Culture, (avoid Preaching Theme), but I feel that the above query is less ambiguous

Just as a follow up Dave,
If I wanted to use the lemma to get to this, would I substitute the Greek lemma for the search terms instead.

It is important to use the parentheses. As it stands "pray" can occur anywhere whilst "ask" has to be close to Jesus.
(pray OR ask) WITHIN 15 WORDS person:Jesus will ensure that both words are close to Jesus.
You can't use the lemma for Jesus because it does not include the referents for Jesus.
"ask" is much broader/different than "pray" and there are many lemmas for "ask". I would stay with the translated words that suit your purpose.

I think it came with all the L9 and L10 base packages, but it is also available separately. It allows you to quickly drill down into all the biblical prayers or other conversations with God. This screenshot shows just the occasions where Jesus spoke with God:

You and Dave Hooten have lit a fire of excitement under me for working with more nuanced searches. I work in a level I trauma hospital, and a driving concern I face every day is prayers for healing and miracles. I'm seeking to understand Jesus's prayer life better and what is available to people facing accidents and diseases, and how that may be availed.
