Searching Collections in the Mobile app in iOS

I have found that when searching a Collection within the mobile app on my iPad, the search results include many books that are not in my library.  So when I try to open such books from the hit list, I get a message saying "Error loading book - This resource cannot be opened because it is not part of your library".

When I carry out the same Collection search in the desktop app, the search results are, as expected, solely from books in my library.

This seems to be a bug - but I wonder if anyone else has encountered this unexpected behaviour in the mobile app.  Or is there anything I need to do within the mobile app to exclude books I do not own from the search?

Is your iPad online or offline when running these searches?

Thank you for responding Graham.  It's online.

Well, the only results which should appear are those within the collection. What are the rules?

    Nevertheless, it does sound weird.

Searches like this are performed on the servers for mobile, whereas they are performed locally on desktop.

    Here's an example:

    Rule: (title:doctrine AND subject:"theology, doctrinal")

Results on desktop - 133 results in 64 articles in 14 resources

Results on iPad - 1,046 results in 569 articles in 83 resources - most of which are not in my library

Sorry, I omitted to say that I was searching for "substitution".

I've just tried this - creating a collection with the same rule as you used.

On desktop: 903 results in 488 articles in 57 resources

On iPad: 649 results in 362 articles in 46 resources

So I'm not seeing the additional results you are seeing - but am surprised I am getting so many fewer results on mobile.

Thank you Graham, this is curious indeed!  I have just tried running the same search with the same rule on my iPhone, and I get the same behaviour as on my iPad.

Approximately the same here 251 in 126 in 44 resources on desktop (narrow, match-case:off, match-all-forms: off).

on Android app: 142 in 75 in 33 resources. Some works seem not to be found in the mobile search (such as Works of BB Warfield Vol 2, or the two editions of Watson's Theological Institutes).

I have created a case with the Search Team for further investigation of the issue. Once we know more I'll respond back here with an update. Thank you all

Hi Christopher, I'm looking into what could cause this. Could you provide a few examples of books that have results for this search but are not in your library?

Thanks Lawrence, here are a few of the books in the hit list in the mobile app but which are not in my library:

    Introducing Christian Doctrine, p 281 (3 times)

Truth, Theology and Perspective: An Approach to Understanding Bible Doctrine, pp 116-117 (7 times)

Things Which Become Sound Doctrine, pp 50-60 (38 times)

Essential Christian Doctrine: A Handbook on Biblical Truth, p 269 (5 times)

A Summary of Christian Doctrine, pp 204-205 (2 times)

    Hope this helps!

Sorry for the delayed response. Thanks, that list is helpful. I have added logging on the server to help determine why they are not being excluded. When you get a chance please try the search for substitution in your title:doctrine AND subject:"theology, doctrinal" collection again in the mobile app. Let me know if you still see the search results in the unlicensed resources.

Thank you Lawrence and Rodney.  I have re-run the search this morning on both desktop and mobile (iPad).

The desktop results are the same as before – 133 results in 64 articles in 14 resources (narrow, match-case:off, match-all-forms:off)

However, the results on my iPad, searching the same collection, are now very different from what I reported earlier.  There are far fewer hits than before – I’m now getting 178 results in 87 articles in 8 resources.  This, again, is different from the desktop results.

I have not tried opening all of the items on my iPad hit list, but of the many I have tried, I am not now finding any that give rise to the error message I reported earlier.

Here are examples of hits on the desktop that don’t show up on the iPad:

Biblical Dogmatics: An Exposition of the Principal Doctrines of the Holy Scriptures, p330 (1 time)

STBC 1 (2 results in 2 articles, one of which occurs in a superscript note numbered 56)

    STBC 3 (2 results in 2 articles)

I may well be missing something here, but I can’t find any way to set case matching, form matching or narrow/default/broad on the mobile app. Could the discrepancy as between desktop and mobile be down to this?  But if that were the case, I would expect the mobile app to show search hits from more than 8 resources (compared to 14 on desktop).  The results on the mobile app do include different forms of “substitution”, e.g. “substitute”.

Rodney, you asked via email for the title of the collection.  This is “Test collection”.

    I hope this information helps.

Thanks for the update. I will look into this new aspect of the problem.

I've added more logging to determine why your licensed resources are not being correctly included. Please try the search on mobile again when you can.

I was able to determine the cause of the missing resources in the mobile search. It isn't about licensing, rather it's the way the query is being parsed differently for desktop and mobile. Specifically, the title:doctrine on desktop is treated as a prefix match, and so matches titles with "Doctrines", but for mobile it is not, and so it will only match titles with "Doctrine". I'm looking into how we can best eliminate or minimize these differences.

I was able to make mobile's query parsing better match desktop. You should find that your Test collection will now include titles with "Doctrines".

Please let us know if you encounter any more discrepancies like this, or if the original problem of unlicensed books in the search results happens again.

Many thanks for your further work on this, and my apologies for my delay in responding - just getting over Covid!

My results with the desktop search are the same as before - 133 results in 64 articles in 14 resources.

On my iPad I'm now getting 378 results in 199 articles in 18 resources.

    Best wishes,

    Chris
