L/V 10 Tip of the Day #78 Bible book numbers for Personal books

Another tip of the day (TOTD) series for Logos/Verbum 10. They will be short and often drawn from forum posts. Feel free to ask questions and/or suggest forum posts you'd like to see included. This tip is as much to remind you to use the wiki as it is for the actual data. The wiki has examples of the use of these numbers. What I don't see mentioned is that the Bible specified must have a verse map including the book. Logos Bible Book Names Note the inclusion of some Dead Sea Scroll books.

As for me.... I'm not Catholic and for that reason ... I'm one that doesn't follow the above... And things work fine for me.

The list has nothing to do with being Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, or pre-1500 Christian. It has everything to do with how to build references in a Personal Book regardless of the canon you choose to use. The original poster in the thread that inspired this post thought that he had the wrong number for the Wisdom of Solomon - a reasonable assumption since it was not being recognized. However, he was using the correct number for the Wisdom of Solomon. The actual problem was that he was using bible verse map that did not include the Wisdom of Solomon (or that his format was incorrect). These verse maps are described in the wiki at Bible Verse Maps (logos.com) and Verse Mapping (logos.com). These maps are primarily used to navigate across multiple Bibles by automatically changing the reference when the same text has different references between two Bibles. One designates the verse map as a suffix to the bible datatype. So when you select a verse in Bible and initiate a search you get a search argument like bible.nabre:"Hebrews 7:26" where nabre specifies the verse map. What you cannot do and what was the apparent problem of the original poster was that the reference did not exist in the verse map referenced.

I'm a bit confused... maybe one of you can straighten me out....

I use the following "[[@Song 1]]" (using Solomon as an example) and that brings me to chapter 1 of Solomon. And just change the number for the chapter I want. This seems to work fine for me.

I do the same for any book of the bible... "[[@bookname chapternumber]]" I do this in many PBs that I have created.

But in reading through what's been posted.... it seems my way is not "kosher"???

Edit: It seems to me that Logos does recognize different ways to signify book-chapter.

Did you follow MJ's links to the wiki? Nearly every bible has its own "verse map" which will differ at some places from other bibles. This may occur only at a weird chapter break in a minor prophet - or the verses in half of the psalms are off (or the psalms themselves...). If you don't specify the verse map in a PB's milestones, the default will be taken which may or may not fit the translation you are using.

The bible datatype (or verse map) is correct, at least for an English language PB i.e. bible.43.11.1. When the OP uploads a sample of his docx file we will know if the format is correct.

You are using abbreviated syntax for the default Bible type which, if you restrict yourself to a certain set of Bibles, will work fine.

There are different formats but the significant difference is the verse map (or bible datatype) because that depends on the translation you are using, where there could be a different number of verses in a chapter or a different number of chapters in the book, or the book itself only exists in some translations.

[[@bookname chapter:number]] ---> implies the default datatype
[[@bible:bookname chapter:number]] ---> specifies the default datatype
[[@bibleNABRE:bookname chapter:number]] ----> specifies the NABRE datatype where SOS (Song) chapter 7 is significantly different to the ESV and it has 14 verses vs. 13 verses! See https://wiki.logos.com/Bible_Verse_Maps#Song_of_Solomon

Thanks to both of you... I appreciate your time in answering this. I have come to the conclusion that in my studies and such with using Logos ... I think I maybe I may use about 20-25% of the power of Logos. I find it is easy for me to get into a "rut" and study and such within my rut...

I don't necessarily like that as I've been told that a "rut is just a grave with both ends open."

I do appreciate all the help I've gotten from forums. I think the forums are "one of Logos biggest hidden strengths".
