Duplicate Resources

Counterfeit Kingdom - The Dangers of New Revelation, New... (Pivec, Geivett) was released a few days ago. Today I was scrolling and saw another entry for it. They show different ISBN numbers, but I am thinking this is a brand new book that was just published, so they are most probably the same. That said, one is a Logos Reader edition ($13.99) and the other is a straight eBook.($17.99). I know Faithlife will sometimes have both versions available, but shouldn't the Reader edition be more expensive, considering the 'additional' work.

You may wish to look into this title ("Reading Between the Lines: A Christian Guide to Literature") as well. I believe it is basically a duplicate, even though the publishing date and ISBN numbers are different.

Based on the dates Logos has listed for each resource and the 'See Inside' Preview, the Pre-Pub title at $9.99 is the 1990 version. However, the image for the book cover of the 1990 version is incorrect. The existing title at $10.79 is the 2013 edition, which was simply a re-release of the 1990 version, but with an updated cover. Per the front matter information for the 2013 release of the book.

I just want to voice my concern, that the numerous examples of duplicate resources in this thread is somewhat troubling! First, it concerns me about Faithlife's quality control processes when releasing new titles. Or, approach to deciding which resource will be a Logos Edition, LRE, or Ebook. (Because SOME of the duplicate titles listed in this thread have been removed, but most of the duplicates have not been addressed.)

Secondly, and more importantly to me, I am spending (aka 'wasting') a LOT of time going back to see if my previous orders and Pre-Pubs orders make 'economical' and 'value' sense. That is to say, is there now a cheaper / better option to obtain the resource from Faithlife? For instance, with "A Jewish Paul: The Messiah's Herald to the Gentiles", I placed a Pre-Pub order for the LRE on November 8, 2022 for $20.99. The LRE version is still on Pre-Pub and now the the eBook edition has also been made available as a Pre-Pub for $13.74. In this specific instance, I cannot justify the additional $7.25 for the 'extra' benefit of the LRE version. So, I will now cancel the Pre-Pub for the LRE and re-order the eBook Pre-Pub.

But they are not the same. I happen to own both - BCT:TEBC is the whole book with >350 pages and 15 internal chapters, whereas BCT:BUCCT is only Preface, Chapter 1 and then Ch 16 Conclusion (possibly there are 14 more of the same, as there seems to be a trend of chopping up books into small chunks), i.e. it runs through page 25 and then jumps to 352 or such.

Yes, in every case it's the identical book; same publisher, year, even same cover image. It's just that it is being offered by Faithlife as both a Logos Reader Edition on logos.com and an eBook edition on ebooks.faithlife.com, which is a mistake/oversight. These reports enable Faithlife to fix the problem. At least that's theoretically what they should be able to do, but...

No, it just seems that one feed from Baker was not correctly cleared (i.e. those books removed that were intended to be built as Reader or Research Editions) - looks like human error to me.

I realize the ISBNs are NOT the same for both of the above PDPs...BUT here is where something gets strange...and I HOPE it is just the picture and description that are wrong for the Pre-Pub...BECAUSE the ISBNs for the Pre-Pub are actually for Donald Guthrie's "New Testament Theology"!!! And I would LOVE to have this title in my library!!

The ISBNs for the Pre-Pub are: 9780830829484, 0830829482 (See image below.)

BOTH of these ISBNs are actually for Guthrie's "New Testament Theology" classic! Both WorldCat and ISBNdb confirm this. I have included a screenshot of the ISBNdb results, see below.

I think you are right, but something really is off with this PrePub: the LLS-ID talks about IVP (which is the publisher of the existing book I own), but the product page lists SPCK - and 2013, whereas the other book was published in 2004. Maybe SPCK made a reprint? British vs US spelling?

While looking into I.H. Marshalls books I nearly preordered the new PrePub https://www.logos.com/product/200914/exploring-the-bible-exploring-the-new-testament-volume-2-a-guide-to-the-letters-and-revelation which seems to be an IVP publishing of the SPCK book https://www.logos.com/product/28259/exploring-the-new-testament-vol-2-letters-and-revelation-new-ed , both 2011 i.e. another duplicate - or near-duplicate if someone corrected the spelling

Good catch on the Vol.2 Letters and Revelation. When looking at both electronic versions, the front matter is definitely different between the releases from the two publishers. The IVP edition even has a few extra paragraphs about Marshall. But looking at approximately 40 pages throughout both releases, I cannot see any difference in the 'real' content of the book. So, they are definitely 'different' editions, but if someone already has the SPCK edition, I cannot see any benefit in the IVP Academic edition...unless their professor is demanding that edition/publisher to be used/referenced in a course.

...and their is a third edition out as a year or so ago, so maybe Logos will offer that one up as well! [;)]

Just noticing that you still have both the eBook edition ($13.74, Live) and the Reader Edition ($12.99, Pre-Pub) available in your catalogue. Is this still your intention? And if it is your intention to offer both versions, I am thinking it would be incredibly beneficial for your customers, if you were to place a note on each PDP that an alternate version is available.

For "The Doctrine of Good Works", it appears that you have resolved the duplicate Pre-Pub (eBook and LRE) issue by deleting the Pre-Pub for the eBook and leaving the LRE Pre-Pub in place.

That is obviously your choice. However, I am a little upset and concerned because I had a Pre-Order for the eBook edition. It appears that when you cancelled the Pre-Pub eBook edition, it removed my Pre-Pub order. BUT...I NEVER received an email from Logos that you cancelled my Pre-Pub. How would a customer know that you cancelled their order, if you don't inform them? And equally, how about informing them that the Pre-Pub eBook edition has been cancelled and give them an option to order the alternative version? I am concerned, how often does this type of activity happen and your customers have no idea?

After I posted this on January 28th, I cancelled my Pre-Order for the LRE and ordered the eBook. I think it is addressed to Mitch Snyder who used to follow this thread and got the issues fixed. It is perfectly normal for Faithlife to remove the eBook from the store when there is a duplicate, so I would expect them to remove PrePub eBooks in such cases as well.

I'm not sure that CS can even see changes to the catalog. I think that when PrePubs are dropped due to the fact that FL doesn't intend to produce that specific book, no communication goes out to the user - which is unfortunate in cases where that book will be produced, just in another edition (even more so if FL looks into interest in that other edition by way of PrePub - those who had signed up for the eBook might be willing to sign up for the Logos edition). Thus I think it's helpful that Wayne adressed this here - after all, those will be rare cases, and especially if users were aware that there was a duplicate PrePub going on, they may find this thread helpful. On the other hand, if Mitch sees this, he might check whether the PrePubs for discarded duplicates warrant a special email informing those users.

Thank-you for being concerned that my posts may not get the response / results that I am hoping for. To be clear, my posts are primarily addressed to Faithlife. I have previously communicated with Customer Service about duplicates and each time their answer to me was the duplicate was probably intentional. They did not know for sure and they certainly did not convey any interest in following up. As for using the forums, I thought that would be the next best option. And, from Andrew Batishko's initial comment comment on December 8, 2022, it seemed like the forums were in fact an appropriate avenue to report such. I tried messaging Andrew twice to ask him to follow up or if I should be contacting someone directly at Faithlife or to just keep posting on the Forums--I heard nothing directly from him, per my comment in this thread on January 28, 2023. (See pic at end of post.) However, I think Andrew probably just forwarded my messages to the appropriate person/team at Faithlife, which I appreciate.

Then on January 30, 2023, Mitch posted that he would follow up on the duplicates and that it was appropriate to post such in the forums. Mitch followed up with a post on February 1, indicating that Faithlife would continue to look at their processes regarding all of this.

Knowing that Mitch / Faithlife were in fact looking at this thread AND that they are wanting to address/adjust processes when necessary, I continued to post duplicates AND also added information about what I see as a process / procedural flaw in not informing their customers of these type of cancelled Pre-Pub orders. As well, I hoped that my posts would inform other Faithlife customers of specific cancelled Pre-Pubs that they would not otherwise have been informed of.

So, I apologize if I have gone about this wrong. Please know, my intent was to keep Faithlife informed of what appear to be mistakes with duplicate items in their catalogue AND to help provide information where they should be looking to correct processes / procedures that will alleviate customer aggravation with my myself and my fellow Logos users.
