Notes or NoteBooks

I have complained for years about the confusion regarding the terminology. Notes or Notebooks. Those two terms are used interchangeably sometimes in ERROR. FIT IT. PLEASE!

I have had numerous responses affirming my point. 

I have a solution. 

When we make a NOTEBOOK, what we are really doing is creating our own THEME. Then we add NOTES to it. That is profound as we discover THEMES in Scripture!

And this makes sense to us not-so-literate computer users.

    Rick mistakenly thinks that the only thing Notebooks are used for is THEMES and wants them to be renamed THEMES, but as others explain in that thread, different people use them for different purposes.

    Rick, simply put, a Notebook is a collection of Notes. Notes can stand alone; they do not need to be inside a Notebook. A Notebook is a way of organizing Notes so they are not all a heap of unorganized Notes. Just like you write notes to yourself in pen on loose slips of paper, or you can write them on pages in a 3-ring notebook. The latter is more organized, but it doesn't preclude you from also doing the former if you want. Your 3-ring binders could be named by THEME, or by Book of the Bible, or by YEAR (say, if you're a seminary teacher and most of your notes are for classes you've taught in the past), or by whatever organizing principle you want. And they don't even all have to use the same classification scheme. I have one Notebook that is just for Typos I have reported. I have others for various kinds of highlighting I've used. I have others for Topics (or Themes as you call them).

    Maybe...or maybe you are giving the term "theme" an unnecessarily narrow definition. You imply that "book" isn't a theme, when it certainly can be, just as "year" can be a theme. It seems that he means "collection identifier" when he uses "theme", which is what all your specific notebook appelatives are...a collected selection of notes based on some identifying characteristic. Your use of "classification scheme" could be retermed as "theme" pretty easily. I'm not saying that "theme" is the best choice, but it is pretty good--certainly good enough for conversational purposes.

    I'm reminded of MS's persistent and perpertually doomed insistence on called the system tray in Windows "the notification area". It is and will forever be rightly called "the system tray", unofficial as that term may be, not least among reasons being the preferable desirability of a specific and highly identifiable 3-syllable term as opposed to a hopelessly generic and memorably dull 8-syllable term. "Theme" is drastically more preferable compared to "classification scheme", even if it isn't perfect.

    I still don't understand how themes would work in Notes.... I can see maybe themes associated with a Notebook.... so that all the notes of the Notebook are of the same "appearance".... Otherwise.... I just think themes would be confusing in Notes.....

    The old theory...."If it works don't fix it" is still a good theory to go by.... and Notes are working really well.... IMHO. [8-|]

    Shoot I tried to add dialog to my post. It didn't work. It's probably lost in space. I'll try again. Inspiration for me is like a bubble. It's gone...

    As some of you know I have brought this up before. Long ago. I even talked to MP Seminars Service and they confirmed that this was an old complaint. They agreed I was on the right track, and they had brought it up with Logos several times but to no avail. Da

    I am NOT trying to change any process. It's simple. Just replace the word "NOTEBOOK" with THEMES or TOPICS. Those words are no more limited than NOTEBOOKS. Don't over think it. They are basically Synonyms. Just going around the same block a different way.

    The dialog in this blog topic it is clear that some of us elementary users are not getting full use of this tool. That's sad. We need stuff like this under the KISS system. (KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID) That's cowboy logic. [:)] Our friends and willing guides like MJ and GK are power users. They are free to use that street. More power to them. They are very helpful and I appreciate them lots. But us elementary users need simple to get deeper. At 75 that's even worse. 1) I have used and built large data bases and the 1st rule is avoid possible error by using terms that are easily duplicated. Using spreadsheet and MS Word are the same. Don't.

    You can see in my picture paste, how I use NOTEBOOKS and NOTES. It is my right arm in LOGOS. I want my NOTES filed under a THEME, TOPIC or NOTEBOOK [:S] Then I can re-study a topic (oops), send it on to someone else or print to out as a collection. I see my Power Users do more than I know how. I'm trying to learn some of that. Thanks
