Signing into an old version of the app

I'm trying to sign in my account on my wife's old ipad mini running on iso 9 but it doesn't seem to be letting me in. Any ideas?

    Which specific device is it? Can the version of iOS be updated at all? iOS 9 is very old. If you can't update it, you may be out of luck.

    It's the ipad mini. When I go to software update is says "The the software is up to date" so I'm guessing that iso 9 is the maximum the device can be updated.

    It would be a shame if it can't be used as it still works fine.

    I should also clarify that the problem I'm having is not being able to login to Logos. I can open the app on my ipad but just can't login and I've checked my credentials and they are correct.

    So I was wondering if the problem of logging in may be connected to having an old version.

    Hi Bruce, I am sorry, but yes, this problem is connected to having an old operating system.  Apple discontinued support for iOS 9 a number of years ago.  

    Currently, the minimum supported version of iOS is 14.1.  That does not mean that our app is broken on all devices using a previous operating system, but it does mean that it is less likely to work the older the operating system is.

    I do not expect this device to be able to correctly run our Web App, but there is no harm in trying.  If not, you could try using biblia.com instead and see if this gives you access to the books in your library.

    I looked up the history of the iPad Mini. Since you are running iOS 9, it is possible that you have a 1-4th gen device. The most likely option is a first gen, which would mean you are out of luck in terms of updating the OS. However, you should verify that. If you have a 2-4 generation device, you CAN update it. 

    If you are indeed on a first gen, did you download the app recently, or was it already on the device? If you did not recently install the app, I would delete it and redownload.

    Assuming you are trying this on the old Logos mobile app version that originally ran on your iPad, I can add that I had a similar experience a few years ago at least once (and i think I remember it also happening on a separate occasion). I had reinstalled the older app (appropriate for the OS version) on a factory-reset device. I concluded that the app could actually run, but the combination of the unsupported OS and unsupported app was actively preventing (i,e,, 'killing') a successful login. I mentioned this on the forum and used the metaphor 'kill switch' to describe the apparent cause and effect. A former Faithlife staffer, who clearly was not aware of the wide range of applications for that metaphor, later pedantically ridiculed me for using 'kill-switch'.

    So, in honor of President Carter's economic advisor, Alfred Kahn, who felt compelled to use the word 'banana' instead of 'recession', I will describe this situation as a 'banana'. So, Bruce, a banana is preventing you from logging in.

    I suppose you're talking about Alfred E Kahn, not Alfred R Kahn (born the same year, oddly enough).  And the chief architect of airline deregulation (along with bananas, of course).

    This thread is an interesting metric of what would happen, absent Faithlife's financial health.  I'd wondered if the limiter would be hardware, system software, or the gatekeeper (FL).  When I was using L7 for a long time, I didn't need to log-in, but folks were busily trying for Libby.  It's interesting the half-life of ones library.

    (I can understand why some my not like that term, but it is common vernacular and should not be offensive to most people.)

    So, Bruce, a banana is preventing you from logging in.

    So, as to the use of a banana preventing someone from logging in... there may be good reasons for it. For example, it could be that the authentication software has changed so the old app is no longer able to sign in. It could also be the old code is no longer secure and FL needed to lock things up. 

    FL has no reason to prevent users from using old devices without good reason.

    Thanks for the explanation Joe. It sure is disappointing to have a something that still works but can't be used for Logos.

    You are correct. It doesn't work.

    If not, you could try using biblia.com instead and see if this gives you access to the books in your library.

    I tried Biblia. It kept saying it was downloading but nothing ever happened.

    I knew that you wanted more information but didn't have the device at the time and now I'm in another location without it again. I'm pretty sure it is a generation 1.
