How do I turn off the translation monster?
I was using the Translate function to translate the Latin in Ott, Ludwig. Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma. St. Louis: B. Herder Book Company, 1957. when I made the mistake of clicking on "more". Now it insists on showing me all the text in the translate window and I can't find a way to turn it off. Even closing and reopening the book doesn't reset it. How to I tell the translation monster know it is time to be quiet - to translate only selected text?

I think you need to deselect the "sidebar" icon, just to the left of the Panel Menu icon.

The problem is that when I reopen it, it is still in the translate everything mode.

If you've closed the translation window before closing the volume and then it re-opens with the translation window showing, I think you've found a bug.

How to I tell the translation monster know it is time to be quiet - to translate only selected text?
The expected behavior is that if you don't have anything selected, it will translated the paragraph at the top of the view. So, it sounds like you are seeing the expected behavior. If it wasn't doing this prior to clicking "more", then there is probably a bug preventing it from working as intended.
As a workaround, you could make sure that you leave some text selected. Then it won't keep changing the translation as you scroll.

It does appear that is currently the case. I'm not clear on why that would be so. For now, if you are concerned about using up your monthly maximum, then close the sidebar when not in use.

The reason for this is that the language tagging in our resources is not always sufficient for short strings (individual words and phrases). If we didn't attempt to translate the text, then we wouldn't correctly translate these.
We'll consider the idea of only doing the English => English translation on selection.

You don't - see untranslated Latin (yellow box) which was correctly translated when selected,
