What categories do you use for your lexicons

Because of the number of places where Logos/Verbum lists all relevant lexicons, I generally prioritize more than five so that the list is ordered by my rules not Faithlife's. I have tagged by lexicons by the following categories:

  • analytic
  • etymological
  • exegetical
  • grammatical
  • semantic domains
  • theological

Have I omitted any type of lexicon? or made a division that I shouldn't have?

    Hi MJ,

Is it possible to share the collection rule that will categorize the lexicons in our library into those 6 groups? As a regular Joe, I find it much easier to tap into resources when they are put in various buckets.

    Thanks

Do you apply more than one category to a lexicon?

    A "Theological" lexicon can consider:

    • theology
    • etymology
    • grammar

although not all three (LTW was the only one with Grammatical terms).  TDNT covers the first two.

At a guess one might consider the DBL lexicons as  grammatical, exegetical and semantic domains!?

I just tag mine by language, and then control them on the reference page of my layout (again language, and an analytical group). Mainly in order of the approximate period they cover, as you move across.  I don't get excited over specific types, since in a guessing-game religious world with scholar's cross-copy,  there's considerable overlap.

And BDAG, as an example, is as etymo, as any etymo dictionary.  Some break out grammar usage but wouldn't be grammatical.  Etc.

For myself, I classify a lexicon based on what information I need that causes me to seek that particular lexicon. So far, I've not run into any that I want to put in two categories but, yes, I would use multiple categories and a hierarchy of categories to provide for a single sequence.

I manually tag them so the collection rule is based only on my tags.

    Thank you MJ.

If it is easily possible to post screenshots (you may have too many, if so don't bother), I can then manually tag it myself similarly. I see Dave's point, but it will be nice for a regular Joe like me who is starting to use these resources to assign 1 main category to each Lexicon.

    Thanks

There are some lexicons that I haven't explored enough to categorize but most of these have had stable classification for a year or so.

MJ what lexicons do you tag as etymological and semantic domains? I know you have a picture but I am blind so it runs together.

    Hi MJ!

You had 35 lexicons tagged based on the screenshots you posted. I had 25 of those lexicons in my Library, which I tagged. Thank you very much. But I still have 26 Lexicons that are not tagged. Examples include the Lexham Research Lexicon, the ones by LSJ, Bauer and Danker, Moulton and Milligan, etc.

Would you happen to have more of your Lexicons tagged? In one of the screenshots, it seems you had 85 lexicons in your library of which the screenshots captured 35.

I’ve read that some lexicons are outdated and that is why you may not have tagged them. Wondering if you had more tagged and, if so, if I and others can be the beneficiary of your tags by you sharing them.

    Thank you.

There are some lexicons that I haven't explored enough to categorize

I concentrated my tagging on the lexicons I was using/searching for most frequently. Other lexicons get added occasionally so as some point I will be motivated to complete the classification of all lexicons. The Lexham Research Lexicons I treat as Factbook support as that is my primary way of accessing them rather than having them take up the limited number of slots in the Context menu.
