MARATHON BEACHBALL: macOS Attempting to Open Timeline Resource
iMac 24 (M1), 16GB, 1TB SSD; macOS Ventura 13.2.1; Logos Desktop 23.2.35
- Opened Library in floating window
- Filtered to Timeline resources
- Clicked 'Israel's Judges' to open resource (tried on first four in list; all crashed)
- Beach ball crash
(Note: While composing this post received 'You have run out of application memory ...' raspberry)

I can't reproduce using your steps on my MacBook Air (M1). I tried reviewing your logs... it does not appear that there was a crash. At what point did you grab the logs? You are supposed to allow the app to crash and then grab the logs PRIOR to restarting. Is that what you did?

I followed Robert's steps (adding Verbum is web connected but tried offline also). I didn't crash; it just beachballed, so eventually I hard-killed it. I also tried the Kings timeline; same. I figure trying each one isn't a good use of beachballs!
MBP M1 Venture latest also.

Thanks for taking a look at the log. No, I used the 'Sample' button, as the logging tool instructions suggested for the occasion. I assumed a very prolonged spin meant either my Mac missed Meadowlark Lemon as much as the rest of us, or it was not coming back. I edited the post subject.
Since DMB is getting the same result, I am, at least, confident now I'm not stuck in Robert World.

I tried this on my M2 MacBook Pro Verbum 24.0.14 beta, while I did not get beachball, it opens tabs very weirdly and unusable:
Thanks. I was wondering if beta would make a difference.
BTW: I have eight of these resources and all are dated at L4 get-go, Oct-2009. Just for fun, I forced one to update, but it didn't change. I have used Macs for two months and this is the first time I have tried to open these.

Thanks for this information -- it helped tremendously. I was able to hang (spinning beach ball which resulted in me force quitting) and I'll write up a case.
Additional info: I was able to get into that state where the UI looked a tad odd, but only if i left my library not in a floating window. Once I selected floating window for my library -- the hang happened for me.

Hi Robert, have you updated to the latest stable version we just shipped on Tuesday? We are unable to reproduce on 24.0.14.

Just for info, with the latest 24.1.14, it still hangs requiring a hard-kill. The timeline resource is on the right, below. Actually, we're going backwards? Tuesday, it at least could draw a resource panel first. Now, it's completely lost.

Yes, I have upgraded to 24.0.14 and I'm still getting the same results as before.

As JT mentioned above, it would be most helpful to have logs. Robert and/or DMB, can you please send logs in this thread? See these instructions on to do so. Thanks in advance!

Will the logs need to be finalized while the ball is still spinning (using the 'Sample' button per instructions), or after I kill the process. If the former, see above. If the latter, see below. (I stared at the beachball until I saw hallucinations of Annette Funicello, or ten minutes, whichever came first.)

Apparently, I violated a semantic boundary between 'Crash' and 'Hang', even though a Hang that never resolves has the same functional effect as a Crash.

I am not an expert log reader... It looks like your logs account for only two minutes.
I see only one thing directly related to the timeline:
Applying Resource panel settings for Preferences: Locator=false|Position={2AD3832E-1731-4244-9A9F-C5996DF6823D}%7cPositionType%3dFitAll|TimelineSkinName=Thin
Did I understand correctly that you are new to Mac? Is this a new installation? Did you download everything from scratch or did you try to use a method to import anything?

It was an informal timing of ten minutes on my part ... the tick tick tock of the stately clock. I would put the uncertainty at +/- 1 minute. Probably a reckoning issue, like starlight speed measured there and then here. [:)]

Scratch.
Thanks for taking a look.

Weird. I can't reproduce on my MacBook Air (M1). I wonder if it is unique to something on your computer or if it is related to your hardware somehow.
Matt at FL had the issue too.
I tried again, but this time using a right-click > New Tab. I think the beach ball almost died, he was turning so slowly! He was so exhausted, he couldn't open a tab. An M1 processor! I did look at the same resource on L7 on an old W7. Looking at your image, you're on Thin (the default choice back-when), so 'thin' itself doesn't seem the problem.
Luckily I have Accordance (Advanced Timeline is a big time waster).

I tried again
Thanks for testing and re-testing.

Matt at FL had the issue too.
After updating though. I was no longer able to replicate. I'll try again today, but last time i tested while on the latest stable version it was working as expected.

Ok ... after Matt's reply, I started trying the Settings. If his didn't work, and then did work, it'd have to be the implementation environment.
And it was. I eliminated my beachballs by setting "Content Scaling" to 100% (I use 120%). And if I do it 'on the fly' while the Timeline is open, it creates the strange view that Don was seeing (no beachballs, but rectangular lines).
Can't guarantee this works for anyone else! Who knows. I re-set to 120% and will continue Accordance timelines.

There has been an issue with content scaling going back well more than a year. I filed it and followed up with tech support. They promised a fix, but it hasn't happened. My issue was using facets in the library, but it effects other things also. I finally just set it to 100%. It's a shajme this is still an issue.

Ah, good to know about the 120% -- let me check on my VM in a bit and get back to you. If, that truly is the culprit. It still would be treated as a bug.

Hmm, looks like that didn't work for me as everything was working as expected.
If you are still experiencing the hang. We'd need your sample.txt file from your machine. You can do that from enabling the logos logs utility page.
Go this page here --> https://wiki.logos.com/diagnostic_logging and scroll to the MAC section and do you see where it says
- >Recommend downloading Logos Logging application that can display then change Diagnostic Logging setting plus use Archive Logs to create zip file.
- Click that Logos Logging Application hyperlink. It should download the diagnostic logging.
- Then open the diagnostic logging tool and make sure it 's enabled.
- Then close and re-open Logos and get the application to hang / repro the behavior.
- Open the diagnostic logging tool and choose the sample button
- You should see the window download with the Sampling option being displayed
- Upload that file here at your convenience.
If you need assistance, someone from our support team could walk you through it as well via 888-563-0382
I'll upload a video example of us doing it here. (Should open a google drive)

Maybe there's another setting in play. I would bet the zooming; the Mac has a 2-finger zooming on the timelines (surprisingly). I'm not swift on the Mac, so the logging is out.
After I finally got past the beachball issue, I notice the coding is pretty bad. I guess maybe 2008 or so, after Libronix. Doing a 'Fit' creates a time scale 2187 B.C. - A.D. 16145! No timeline events remotely close. Some other poor coding examples as well. Biblical Places maps are also a mess (from 2008 too), so I wouldn't bother with a case.
Again thank you for your help.

Hi Matt:
The log file I posted in the OP was obtained as you detailed today. (A reply later had a file obtained after a 10 minute hang observation, then force quit.)
Today, I applied what DMB discovered. My settings prior to today were Content Scaling 110%, Program Scaling 120%. I changed to Content 100%, Program 120% and it hanged, but never became dead dead dead, so I force quit. I changed to 100% for both and was able to open all eight of these resources. Linked below are screenshots for a couple of them in both Dark Mode and Light Mode. (Forum software wouldn't allow me to post directly.)

I'll keep trying but so far coming up short. I wonder if I am missing a collection of resources as you said 8 but looking at my resources I don't know if I have the same eight. I do have Israel's Judges Timeline, but maybe there's some collection I need. Does anyone have a link to get all these 8 resources?
For context on hangs vs crashes for internal troubleshooting. If the application crashes, your log files help identify, BUT the kicker with a hang is that the sample.txt file is what is more useful on a hang compared to logs.
