There has been an ongoing discussion about being able to open multiple instances of Logos and enhanced ways to manage layouts and tabs. https://community.logos.com/forums/t/187160.aspx

This is particularly pertinent to those who have multiple screens and multistep exegetical workflows. Personally I never considered this before now because Logos was slow, but with version 10 I am pushing the application to do more and more.

if you would like to see this evolve, please vote and add your opinions on what you would like to see. I really like how another Bible software product handles this with their ability to have multiple layouts open at once, their tabs can contain more and even named and put into zones. From a workflow perspective this is powerful because it even allows me to name each of my exegetical steps tab by tab, with each focused on another step.

You can already get this to some degree by downloading Verbum if you are a Logos user. You get to have both open simultaneously since they are designed to be different programs, but both read your library in the same way.

As I stated elsewhere, I don't think this is a viable option now for 2 reasons:

1. Verbum is mainly for Catholics and I'm not Catholic.

2. I don't think it solves the issue by cluttering up my disk space with another program that is not needed.

I don't really see a need for this for my workflow.

I open new windows, and arrange things how I want.

I don't see how other than creating more overhead this would be more beneficial.

I am a multiple monitor user. one big 40" in the middle and at various points I've had as many as four surrounding it... right now, I'm scaled down to three total, including the big one in the middle. I also use Logos in VR (basically a remote desktop situation with virtual displays... While Its not super fantastic yet (fonts are difficult to read until the font is so large to make it difficult in other ways), it has promise. But even there, I'm not wishing for things to be different.

Agreed on point 2. However as a public beta tester, I frequently have Logos on the production build, and verbum on the beta on the same machine.

Until recently, the difference was in decoration mostly. IIRC there are new features that are verbum only... so it may not be this way for ever, but for now, its not going to be different in any substance way from vanilla logos. maybe a few catholic words here or there (I think Homily manager instead of Sermon Manager) but no differences of substance. I believe if you put a sermon into "homily" manager, it will show up in "sermon" manager in Logos.

So its mostly a matter of decoration at this point to make people feel more comfortable with the software.

Using a well known other Bible software Programme, I can have multiple layouts open at once with no noticeable speed impact. With that said, not everyone will have a preferred workflow that will require this. The good news is that just because the capability is there, you don’t have to use it.

Verbum is certainly marketed to a Catholic audience, but it will populate with whatever Faithlife resources you have. I use it to read my Baptist Heritage Series books. I feel kind of like Miriam getting Moses' mother to raise the "son of Pharaoh's daughter". I did visit my Verbum Home Page, and the lnks are decidedly Catholic. I wasn't surprised, but I rarely use Home Page anyway, whether Logos or Verbum.

It really is like having a second Logos. I used it when L10 rolled out, to see how I liked certain things. I found out I don't like my Toolbar on the left. And you don't have to download every resource into both. It's a solution to help take smaller bites to make chewing easier.

I don't understand this at all? You know you can open up as many resources as you like in as many windows as you like and multiple copies of the same resource. Running extra instances of the same program could only work if they separated out the database as a server or something. Otherwise, you'd have file access issues beyond comprehension. Surely unless I've misunderstood the program already does everything you are looking for?

There would also be sync and download issues. And with what layout would the new instance(s) open?

I think that opening a Layout in a floating window with the main toolbar would work provided new tabs would open in that layout. It would alter the dynamic of opening layouts in other installations, so FL would need to step up with a Project concept that ties layouts together i.e. resources in a floating window are independent of any layout unless named, and layouts are independent of a Project unless included in one. Just thinking...

I was just thinking something similar. If in the current Logos window we could open multiple layouts, by placing each layout in a zone, then if we could tie them together, you could run your workflows through each of the zones depending on your preferred steps.

A rough example of layouts contained in each zone:

zone 1 - background and context layout

zone 2 - textual studies layout

zone 3 - supporting materials and theology layout

If these zones could then be 'floated', to allow those with multiscreen capabilities to spread out their work.

I am sure I am oversimplifying this. However, using another Bible programme I am inspired by some of their window management to see if there is more we can do on the Logos platform.

This would probably work. In my mind.. this would be like working with Word or Excel or such.... and opening a new file whereby you have all the "ribbons" available in the new file. Add to that the ability to drad a "tab" from one monitor to another and still have the "toolbar" if it's a new monitor. I guess like .... any time we create a new "window" put the toolbar in it.

It might not help some folks but there's an app called Groupy that works in Windows and allows you to manage lots of open tabs. I frequently use it to corral stuff I have open. I often have floating windows of things I read as I work and this is very useful for it. It's just a few bucks.
