Clause searches with morphology

A Clause search can include the morphology of verbs, although the syntax is a bit different than Morph searches:

  • Morph search: @V??I
  • Clause search: verb-morph:V??I

I have a few questions about entering morphology in Clause searches:

1. Is there a way to specify the morphology of a verb with a particular lemma? In a Morph search, to find the imperatives of βάλλω, I would enter:

  • lemma:βάλλω@V??M

How would I enter a similar Clause search? I tried this but it did not work:

  • verb-morph:V??M INTERSECTS verb-lemma:βάλλω

2. Also, is there any way to enter the morphology of nouns or adjectives in a Clause search? For consistency, I would expect something like noun-lemma and noun-morph. Even less confusing would be to use the same syntax as Morph searches.

By experimenting, I discovered that I can do this by putting parentheses around each search term:

    • (verb-morph:V??M) INTERSECTS (verb-lemma:βάλλω)

I am not sure why this is required, but it works. This seems like a bug or quirk of the syntax of a Clause search.

I have not determined an answer to my second question:

    2. Is there any way to enter the morphology of nouns or adjectives in a Clause search? For consistency, I would expect something like noun-lemma and noun-morph.

    Hi Harry.

Have you checked out the Clause Search documentation (here: https://ref.ly/logosres/logos4help?hw=Clause+Search ) to see if what you're trying to do is supported?

Generally, if you're looking to mix word-level stuff (morph) with clause-level stuff, you'll want to use Syntax search.

I call it a quirk - 'cause I doubt it is a hidden feature!

You should also appreciate, knowing Clauses, that verb-morph:V??M verb-lemma:βάλλω will give the required result.

I have what may be a related question. I notice there are very few posts discussing "clause search" so I am wondering if it has been superseded by a different feature in Logos 10. My issue is that I am trying to replicate the search below I found in a help video that is exactly what I need, but I cannot get it to work.

My issue is that I am trying to replicate the search below I found in a help video that is exactly what I need, but I cannot get it to work.

    The first is polarity:negative subject:God  object-lemma:בְּרִית

The second is    object-lemma:בְּרִית  ANDNOT subject:God

No. The need for Clause/Syntax Search is not as great as for text Search. Where users may be interested, composing the Search can be difficult and the results are not as definitive/trustworthy as one wishes.

    Thank you again Dave,

I found that this search as a basis will provide me what I need:

speaker:person:God INTERSECTS addressee:person:Israelites INTERSECTS covenant OR obey.

I appreciate your quick response and setting me in the right direction,

And also this search yielded more of what I am looking for:

speaker:person:God INTERSECTS addressee:person:Israelites INTERSECTS (poor OR alien OR sojourn OR stranger OR needy OR foreign) in Top (NASB95)
