male definitions

The best Greek dictionaries define anēr (ἀνήρ - G435) as a man (an adult male human being).
New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology and Exegesis (NIDNTTE)
ἀνήρ G467 (aner), man, husband; άνδρίζομαι G437 (andrizomai), to behave in a manly way, be courageous.
Theological Dictionary of the New Testament (TDNT)
The word is common as the general designation of a man with adjectives and substantives denoting the function, e.g., ἀνὴρ μάντις, but also ἄνδρες λῃσταί.
A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature (BDAG)
ἀνήρ, ά,νδρός, ό (Hom.+, common in all the mngs. known to our lit. and LXX) man.
Strong's Greek Dictionary
ἀνήρ anḗr, an'-ayr; a primary word (compare G444); a man (properly as an individual male):—fellow, husband, man, sir.
Others however seem to include males of any age (men and boys).
Bill Mounce Greek Dictionary
Gloss: man, male, husband; usually an adult male, but in some contexts the emphasis is on maturity rather than gender
Thayer's Greek Lexicon
ἀνήρ, ἀνδρός, ὁ, a man, Latin vir. The meanings of this word in the N. T. differ in no respect from classic usage; for it is employed
- with a reference to sex, and so to distinguish a man from a woman; either
- a. as a male
- b. as a husband
- with a reference to age, and to distinguish an adult man from a boy.
- universally, any male person, a man
- when persons of either sex are included, but named after the more important.
Which is an accurate definition of anēr (ἀνήρ, G435): man (adult male) or male (male of any age)?

Our thesis student gets around!
The interesting part will be whether the AI guy can do most of his thesis work, or humans will need to answer the obvious.
I don't understand why semantic range is so foreign.

As a rancher's daughter, I get to be impolite and call this a silly question. When you look at a herd of bovines on the range, you generally see "cattle" or "cows and calves". I see "cows, heifers, calves, and maybe a bull or two". Or I see "a commercial herd of Herefords and Charlais." Or, if I'm in Wisconsin, I might see a dairy herd as opposed to my usual assumption of breeding stock or commercial beef. When you look at a group of bovines in a stockyard feeding pen, you see "cows", I see "steers, heifers, yearlings". I'm too young to see "dogies" except in a song. The way a word is used, is used by lexicographers to infer the meaning; there is no ultimate authority handing out official meanings. So, while this is important question to ask to learn about the nature of language, it is a silly question to expect a direct answer to.

It depends…Budlight defined genders differently but within a few days they changed their mind because it caused them to lose money. Now Coors Light is sticking to the traditional/conservative definition and is capitalizing on Budlight’s mistake in defining genders 😂😂😂 It’s either male or female as God created them and it applies to each since birth.
The good news is that there are still nonbelievers that still possess morals and common sense. They don’t question God’s Word based on legends/fairy tails to know the difference 👍😁👌 You either stand for something or fall for anything!
So yes, male, man, macho applies to boys and grown men alike!

The Bible never says the list is exhaustive nor does it tell us how the Israelites dealt with the androgynous. Well, since God had just created Adam and Eve, I guess the list is exhaustive but not predictive. So please leave your theology outside the click on the Logos forum and quit turning a thread into political drivel and insults.

I agree with this statement but I suspect we would disagree on who stood on which side of the dichotomy ... which is why you should leave your politics and theology outside.

I have read multiversions of the effect of the ad on Budlight ... and am too lazy to check your facts.
Is not theology. Bud and Coors light were used as recent examples to illustrate male and female 😉 Genetic disorders tell you there’s something wrong with a male‘s or female’s body. They’re still male or female but with some sort of genetic disorder due to the fallen nature of this world. Think consequences of sin 👌

Do the cans or the contents determine that Bud is male and Coors is female? [:#]

I'd agree on the fallen nature aspect ... but my vocabulary is not as limited as yours. Of course, have you had a close friend give birth to a child with three chromosomes rather than two? XX and XY doesn't quite cover it does it? As for genetic variation equaling genetic disorder, I'm so glad you agree we night owls are the perfect part ... morning larks have a genetic disorder (including my sister, of course).

No, neither cans nor content determine gender, but the hidden agenda is trying to use that to promote an all inclusive whatever you want to be mentality. But then again, that’s another topic.
And yes, my vocabulary is limited compared to yours, but I still have a lot more to learn if I get to live long enough 👍😁👌

Now, DAL. You quoted the Text ... of course God created much more than the exact Creation list. But then you gave the Diety your own opinions.
I'm a big believer in valueing what He created ... not the various churchmen creations (multiple).
